  • If you are looking for Nonfiction November book recommendations, I have a bunch in today's video! I have kind of specific taste in nonfiction, so there is a strong emphasis on race relations, intersectional feminism, and graphic memoirs, with a few other things thrown in for good measure. Among them are some of my favorite nonfiction books. Enjoy!

    Thanks for the recommendations! I like a wide range of nonfiction. Some memoirs (not celebrity, more people who have experienced hard situations), adventure books (like travels or mountaineering), and then just informative books (like Michael Pollan or books on organizing). It’s usually pretty random. Some of these sound really interesting.

      Hope some of these were helpful! That sounds cool. I love the diversity available in nonfiction.

    Great list! Unfortunately I couldn't do Hidden Figures. I tried the physical book and then the audiobook, I think I made it farther in the audiobook? But it ended up being too dry for me. I felt like it read more like a research paper than the biography I think it was supposed to be. Haven't seen the movie yet, but it's on my list!

      Yeah, the audiobook worked for me but it’s definitely heavier on the research. The movie is wonderful though!

    I just found your channel and I’m so HERE for this. I loved Coates’ book. I want to read Stamped from the Beginning, even though it’s so long. I hadn’t heard reviews on Antiracist yet so thank you. Two of my favorites were Just Mercy by Bryan Stephenson and Men we Reaped by Jesmyn Ward.
    I loved We should all be feminists, so good! I just picked up Murder she wrote for nonfiction November too!!!

      Yes!!! I highly recommend Stamped and Antiracist. I need to pick up Just Mercy! I might join in a readalong soon.

    Have you ever read The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks? It’s about science but has a lot of race relations emphasis as well and it is incredible.

      Bronte G I agree. A truly UNBELIEVABLE story.

    I love your recs. One that I read a while ago that was fascinating and may interest you is *The Dark Fantastic: Race and the Imagination from Harry Potter to the Hunger Games by Ebony Elizabeth Thomas* which is about how black female characters have been/are dealt with in and around (four specific franchises of) YA fiction (books and screen) and fandom. It's a little dry but the subject matter is incredibly interesting. I would also love to see something similar around adult female characters in genre fiction and male characters (in both YA and adult) too.
    Hunger is a book that I think I've been leery of due to the nature of Roxane Gay's backstory of rape and her fatness which I find hard to read about, but you are the first person I've heard mention that she discusses the difference between being fat and being _very_ fat which is something I always think about personally with the increase in my own weight (from 'not skinny' to 'fat') in recent years. This makes it more likely that I may pick it up at some point.
    I don't read nearly as much NF as I am actually interested in, but what I go for are some of the same types as you social commentary around race, gender, feminism (and class) etc. I also like memoirs about people I'm interested in, or who have similar backgrounds to me, who do work I'm interested in or have particularly interesting stories to tell. Recently I'm becoming more interested in some lesser-known times/topics in history too. TFS :)

      OohThe Dark Fantastic sounds really interesting! I will see if I can find that. Thanks for the recommendation.
      Hunger is pretty intense at times, but she is also very insightful.

    I have Eloquent Rage on my Nonfiction November TBR and am really looking forward to it. I also LOVED Rage Becomes Her, and Stamped From the Beginning was truly masterful. A couple recs in line with your list here (if you haven't already read these) are The Warmth of Other Suns by Isabel Wilkerson and Sister Citizen by Melissa Harris-Perry.

    • @BeautifullyBookishBethany
      @BeautifullyBookishBethany  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes!!! Glad you loved these too! They’re brilliant. Thank you for the recommendations and enjoy Eloquent Rage!

    I love non fiction about science and future possibilities. One of my favorite n-f writer is Michio Kaku. He explaines the hardest science stuff in a very funny and interesting way, so it feels like you're reading a sci-fi adventure book! Also anything about humans body and mind. Oliver Sacks "Man who mistook his wife for a hat" was very eye opening.

    • @BeautifullyBookishBethany
      @BeautifullyBookishBethany  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is high praise! I think science is interesting but haven’t read too much of it recently.

    I loved We Should all be Feminists and I borrowed Eloquent Rage from the library but let it expire... yes yes yes to Rage Becomes Her! Did you read Her Body and Other Parties yet?

      Yes!!! These are so good! And no I still haven’t read Her Body and Other Parties but I want to! 😫

    I tend to go for more subject based stuff, like historical figures (Nur Jahan or Njinga of angola) or I go for studies based stuff like As We Have Always done by leanne simpson. Then sometimes I read essays, like Roxane Gay or Tressie Mcmillan Cottom . Nonfiction is a big genre, there's a lot of ground there. A classic that I've always loved is women, race and class by angela davis.

    Rage Becomes Her sounds really interesting! The film version of Hidden Figures was great. I definitely struggled a bit to get through the book in places. I tend to prefer nonfiction books that deal with nature or animals.

      Rage is so good! Yeah, that’s definitely why I recommend Hidden Figures on audio because it can be a bit dense, but I felt like it was worth it.
