Defensive play with very few units concedes the rest of the map to the opponent and opens you up to raids, making you play reactionary with very little expansion. Make sure to attack early game with less fabs and more units. Each fab takes ages to build so you have reduced production of combat units; that might be fine if the production power of the fabs can be converted into expansions, more eco, more factories, etc. But you cannot defend against an aggressive player in a 1v1 unless you have equal number of units, so you'll just lose all that if you try to grab that much map control. So really around 4 fabbers is the maximum you can get away with in the first 2 minutes of the game.
I got smashed on this exact map with boom bot spam in the same way. They just kept picking off metal until I was at a disadvantage. T1 spam is definitely the tactic. Gg
