Great story! I served as a Seaman aboard the USS Long Beach CGN 9 65-69 and steamed some of the same oceans. This book took me back to that time in my life. A seaman leaves the sea, but the sea never leaves the seaman...
When I turned my I-Pad on this morning on the screen was “ Sailing around the world “ what a wonderful story, I would be very afraid, I fear deep water ….I look forward to listening to it…..Best wishes from Cheshire, England.
Fascinating. Joshua Slocum's stories have inspired countless sailors and want to be sailors. You must be proud of your family history. Does the ocean tradition run strong in your veins as well?
A familiar port is a welcome sight after squalls and stormy seas, coastal tides and currents are not to be trifled with. "Old Man" O' Rheordan, who taught my father to sail, would often talk about Joshua and tell us stories as children.
This is such a great book. I read it back in college. If you have never heard of it, you should most definitely check it out. I for one can't wait to listen to it on this channel. Thanks for keeping up the great work, people!
Alan Chant is a very good reader. I'd like to hear more from him. I tired to read this book when sailing in grade school. It didn't hold me then. This reading makes it very interesting.
@cheap cigs I am afraid i cant follow your answer, i do know that "lol" stands for laugh out loud but i am puzzled how it connects to my comment or this wonderful audiobook. Maybe you care to enlighten me, i would be very obliged. With regards, Malte
Please note error at 4:50:46 on leaving Devonport Tasmania. "Weighed anchor September 16 1897 and again put to sea"... and arrives Port Jackson April 22 anchors Watson's Bay. I think Alan (narrator) means "Weighed anchor April 16 1897" as a good run up the coast to Sydney would be about 5/6 days. I haven't read the book so I don't know where the error comes from, (publishing error?) I have thoroughly enjoyed a great yarn, thankye Capt. Joshua...
What a great book, and what a great collection of books you gathered here!Should these narratives be accompanied by the text read - that would be a GREAT help for English learners like myself and, I am sure, thousands other.
I was a little confused about the reading in a part. The main subject said that he found Talo. Talo as in balls of floating sulfur or Tallow Beef Fat? I kinda searched around I think he found sulfur balls to cook with. Do they produce a lot of soot? I also cook over a fire as a wandering nomad.
As he sailed past Pitcairn, the Manbearpig must have realized that the ship would outrun it. So the beast swam back to Pitcairn and had its way with the local women and then decided to swim to Antarctica. To have its way with penguins.

You can tell this guy loves the sound of his own voice. It detracts from the reading.
Would love to try but I don't have a boat.
They speak Portuguese in Brazil, and the correct pronunciation of Magellan is MAH-GEL-AN as in GELATIN
