Shade Tree Conversions Diesel turbo tractor engines Part 1

  • Gary Brown explains how turbo diesel tractor engines can be installed in pickups and how they can get up to 40 miles per gallon and run up to 100 miles per hour. These trucks can run on diesel or biodiesel. They burn diesel much more efficiently and therefore get up to triple the miles per gallon. This was done by testing and by trial and error. A good mechanic could do the same for your vehicle to help improve mileage. shadetreeconversions.com patriotsenergybill.com

    He's absolutely right about the high education snobs that have to follow everything by the book, but the hard workers will figure out how to make this stuff work. I work in a small town truck shop and put a Detroit 4 53 in my pickup and my foreman has an Isuzu 6 cylinder in his. They both run great and we get better mileage than a gas engine ever would.

      @@MrScottJ87 likely a Muncie 4 speed (rock crusher) with a granny first gear... find them in 3/4 and 1 ton Chevy's and more … as for the splitter when the term splitter is used it usually refers to a 2 speed rear axle unit (not a double trans set-up) very reliable Eaton versions stand the tests of time provided the driver knows how to use it. These are found in many commercial and farm use trucks, long beds, dump trucks and give the option for 2 final drive ratios inside the axles gear set which allows a user to split each gear in the trans by switching the rear axle gear set many options how to drive such a beast but usually not needed until the vehicle is loaded to the gills. They aren't brand/manufaturer specific such units can be found in ford, chevy, international and many other trucks.. If your looking for a good trans for such a build there are some nice Spicer transmissions out there from back in the day that are 5 speeds with actual over-drives (.75 and .64/.67 5th gear) unlike the Muncie 4 (1:1 4th gear) best place to find one of these units is a bus/school bus certain model numbers have great gear sets and as mentioned real over-drive. Yes, the OP did word it in a way to cause confusion or he himself is confused as to what in behind what when he listed the specs.

      Yeah probably about 10 years ago when you could find them for a $1000 or less in decent shape. Too many people on eBay want well over $2000 for just the engine. There are some great options for diesel swaps, Kubota V2203 IDI and DI for anything in the Ford Ranger size. Yanmar 4TNE86 2.1L...has a IP similar to the Bosch Ppump on the 4BT. 1.9L ALH TDI. Small CAT engines which are sold and made by Perkins.

      I'd shy away from a CAT especially the 3116. Its a bit iffy plus with a 30qt oil pan...more than double the Cummins.

    • @GambisRestorations
      @GambisRestorations 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You aren't wrong but they are really heavy and hard to put in smaller trucks. The 4bt is way better than anything else but in a full size truck or bigger. Price is 3k now for one.

    • @Ratkill9000
      @Ratkill9000 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      4 years ago when I looked into doing a 4bt swap they were $1200 with a transmission, Gm or Ford. Now $3000-4000 is way too much. Might as well get a VW TDI to swap into a ranger or S10. Kubota 2203 IDI/DI are an up and coming engine for swappers but those have shot up in price the last 2 years. Really isn't much out there that's decent for swapping. Even Deutz engines are hard to get ahold of.

  • @BlazingBlakesGaming
    @BlazingBlakesGaming 8 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    diesels are more efficient mostly because of direct cylinder injection and a more complete burn of the fuel. hence why these newer direct injection gas engine are becoming so efficient!

    • @juhokestila7367
      @juhokestila7367 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not quite. Diesels are more efficient because the cylinder is always full of air. They don't burn the fuel as well as gas engines which results in high particulate emissions. In "normal" gas engines (carburetor, throttle body injection and port injection) the fuel has plenty of time to mix with air which results in more thorough combustion. In diesel and gasoline direct injection engines the fuel is burnt almost immediately before mixing thoroughly with air. This however enables the use of ultra lean mixture in gas engines which makes them more efficient.

    • @trevnico
      @trevnico 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      truthfully the bottom line is its verry simple there is more potential energy (btu) stored in a gallon of diesel than there is in a gallon of gasoline...which equals more efficiency.

    • @juhokestila7367
      @juhokestila7367 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Efficiency has nothing to do with energy density of the fuel.

    • @trevnico
      @trevnico 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      actually it does...

    • @juhokestila7367
      @juhokestila7367 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Efficinecy is ratio of energy put into the machine and energy that comes out of it. It has nothing to do with the actual volume of the fuel used.

    the ULSD road vehicle diesel fuel is further refined to get most of the sulfur out, that is why fuel has gotten so expensive. (taxes per gal at retail similar to gasoline) the emissions are a complete different issue, esp from midwest/farm/rural areas compared to big city/california etc. many folks need an xtra way to town. some years back i did a perkins 6cyl from a forklift +clark 5spd into 69 D200, really too heavy, but simpler than the 6.9/7.3Frd an more life than 6.2/6.5Chv less $ if used.

Gas didn't kill the electric car, it's not reasonable on a large scale, they require charging, the power grid even today could not sustain a large load of electric cars, solar nor wind could ever meet demand and require too much area cleared for use, cutting trees ain't an answer!

    At 4:01, that is the same engine used thruout Argentina in Ford, Chevy & Dodge pickups, the owners swapped out the factory gas engines long ago for this Perkins. My brother-in-law had one in his 84 Ford F100, short-box. All is fine until you "run out of power".....one day he drove down into a dirt pit, fairly steep.....& couldn't get out! The poor thing just didn't have enough power, a gearbox with more gears MIGHT have helped, but I doubt it. If you've ever seen a pickup truly plain run out of power, it is quite the pathetic sight.

    Love the conversions, but let's tell the truth about gas prices. Gas has not gone up, the value of the dollar has gone down. In 1970, a silver dollar would buy about 4 gallons of gas. Today, a silver dollar will buy about 10 gallons of gas. The government is the problem, but it is the funny money we are forced to use that makes most folks think businesses are raising properties. This is economics 101 - basic stuff. If you don't see the real problem, you can't fix it.

    fuck it, the I6 or 302, 351 V8 made better power. A truck is ment to work. i would never downsize for economy when the gas engine does a better job. I own a VW passat that was available with a turbo 4, I have the 30v V6, it pulls harder and has more usable power than the turbo I4 1.8. You dont even need throttle when the clutch comes out, it will move at idle. the v6 has power everywhere from idle to 7000rpm. Not to mention, it gets over 30mpg highway in a 3400lb car

      That's a pretty dumb way to look at it. There's lots of good, solid truck chassis out there with tired or wore out gas powerplants. Dropping a solid small diesel in one will probably give you almost as much lifetime as a new $50k truck for $40k+ less $$, and save you another $1k++/year in fuel while it does it, along with lower insurance rates. And if that diesel craps out several years down the road, you can rebuild it or buy another for a small fraction of what a replacement motor will set you back in one if today's wonder trucks. Based on all the idiosyncrasies associated with modern hi-tech powerplants, I wouldn't be shocked if this lo-tech diesel/dumb transmission swap proved to be more reliable than a new truck over the next 10 years, too.

    I'm not against what you are doing, but how do you get around the EPA regulations? You need subtitles for the deep southern accent and lack of a good microphone. If it wasn't for the strict emissions regs in Mn I'd put a small diesel in my 93 F150 instead of driving a smaller less safe Ranger. By the way there is at least 150-200 years of "known" oil reserves in Alaska and the US govt classified that in 1973 and made them cap the well. We wouldn't have a huge deficit if we used the oil we have.

    • @stevenwolfe9085
      @stevenwolfe9085 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @WV Gunslingers we're now the biggest oil producer in the world. Why the hell should we continue to make Saudi Arabia rich and defend them when they pay us nothing for their Defense. I'd rather that we continue to drill more oil and natural gas here at home and stay the hell out of the middle east.

    • @c.j.rogers2422
      @c.j.rogers2422 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@stevenwolfe9085 Because it is more secure, in the long run, to leave ours in reserve. If we ever became involved in a really serious beef with Russia or China, 10 or 50 or 100 years from now, depending on oil from overseas could become a real Achilles Heel. If someone's natural resources have to be depleted, let's make it someone else's. That's the long view. I'm not necessarily saying I agree that's the best strategy, but that is a legitimate rationale.
