Tbh, I'm leaning more towards this being a further development of south african TTD and some other designed intended for "no strings attached" export. Reason? Player character can freely buy it. So I'm leaning into it being some joint venture that came after the failure of south african TTD(uses variation of Leo2 hull and some british and french components), british Vickers MBT Mk.10(also uses Leo2 based hull, but with british 120mm gun), brazilian Osorio(once again a mix of british and french components) and french AMX-40(as you've mentioned, french use this style of hatch. And they were fans of coaxial 20mm). A last ditch attempt to salvage all the aforementioned projects that in GTA universe finally bore some result. Even if 1,5 million feels like a laughably low price even for a used tank on a black market. The riveted armor feels like bolt on applique composite, possibly MEXAS as you can see it used for side skirts too. So the "vision ports" may actually be small maintenance hatches to allow limited access to space between original armor and applique one for electrical wiring(for example frontal one seems like ideal place for searchlight while side one is suspiciously close to smoke mortars). Or to clean it/fill it with something. Having MG armor on the side is okay as it looks like ammo for .50 HMG and it would be faster and easier to reach for this one... if only it was on the same side of the turret as commander's hatch. Reaching for those boxes would expose commander, but it is easier to get them from outside. If it's export intended design then having both turbine and diesel engine as options is quite a logical way to inflate the market viability. Seems like you got the wrong model delivered to you though. Which means that some dictator had also gotten a turbine one by accident in his batch of diesel ones:D We see blow out panels, but it also probably has autoloader since one man(with the help of hidden loyal henchman always hiding in the tank and playing with main gun) can use it to limited capacity. So bustle autoloader. A very FRENCH thing to have too. Also if it were to be using british 120mm, it would mean that the ammo it could be using could be HESH. Dual purpose, provides big explosion, but with comparably little amount of shrapnel since the shell has thin casing. So I believe that in GTA universe there is a joint international arms conglomerate working in South Africa, Brazil, UK and France among other places. Might also be used as a way to explain why names and looks of most guns are so different. They're either licensed variations of existing designs or straight up copies.

As a Leopard 2 tank crewman myself, i have to say your knowledge is on point! Concerning your point at 14:45 about which side the drive should be, the driver was basically set on the right side so that the loader (inside the left part of the turret) would have access to extra ammunition that would be stored next to the driver inside the chassis. this, so that when the main gun aims at 11 o clock, the gunner could easily completely refill the turrets stored ammunition.

Maybe GTA v takes place in an alternate universe where the US did pick the leopard in the trials that you were talking about for all you know that could have happened
Guide horns? As a tanker for over 4 years, I've always known them and always heard of them as center guides. Lol. 12:13 - Abrams has a periscope built into the loaders hatch. And well. 3 periscopes built into the drivers hatch. You also mever mentioned that the tank also fired presumably a 120mm cannon once every 2 seconds. Which is a pretty fast fire rate.
I do somewhat incorrectly go by what they were potentially called back in WWII. As there were still plenty of tanks that didn’t have their guides run through the center of a pair of road wheels (best immediate example is the Sherman). I know the US military at the time did differentiate between a “center guide track” and one in which the guides lay on the edges. Nowadays pretty much the whole world goes for center guided tracks so it’s the only term used anymore.
Another reason for shells to blow up after a set distance in the game. Is definetely so that they wouldn't just continually go forever if you sent them towards the horizon. Meaning that with enough shots and no premature explosion the game could crash.
May I add that Artillery HE shells can often have proximity fuses so they explode just before hitting the ground so it has more destructive capability (including SPGs the M1019 I believe does have them for example)
like how the tank is breathing which leads me to believe its some sort of armored american animal. Yet is also very german since it's a leopard 2A4, sort of.
so from what the descriptions says it would seem that gtaV takes place in an alternate universe where the Leopard 2AV won against the XM-1 and became the US’s main battle tank. (words totally not stolen from spookston) something i have noticed tho is the hull does not resemble that of the Leo 2AV. it’s relatively flat front on the hull reminds me more of the South African TTD main battle tank.
fun fact war thunder used to have barrel collilsion but people complained it made game too hard as they couldn't take their tiger down narrow ways, so it got removed.,..... i love barrel collision
If the turbine engine sounds orgasmic, this guy really must like doing laundry 😄 Washing machine starting the spin was first thing that came to mind. Just heck of a lot louder.
God, that turbine engine sound is fucking AWESOME! So upset Rockstar, despite GTA V being a 100M dollar game, reused their fucking truck engine sound for this underrated beast!
The British mainly riveted our tanks because we didn't have the manufacturing power to do anything else fast enough. We were fighting almost all of Europe at the time since the Nazis took almost all of Europe. We also had to fight in Africa and Asia too so our limited resources were spread out. Also yeah, train factories.
You can't tell what the coax machine gun would be externally. If you were to judge the Abrams based on the big external shroud you'd think it was an auto-cannon as well, when of course it's just an M240, but you can't tell based on the external shroud.
fun fact, when you stop the time in GTA V when firing from the Rhino, it actually just sends an rpg round at a very high speed, so technically the game is correct with the explosion effect since the rpg uses heat warhead
17:27 The Abrams Gas Turbine Engine was originally used on many us aircraft which is why it does sound similar to how something like a Jet that is turning on its engines
well, the rivets could have been external ERA plating socket points like how the bradley looks without it's extra ERA attached and also the Coax gun is pretty accurate, the appearance of the large coax barrel is actually the armored shroud
Not any sort of expert either, but I should point out that (in reference to 17:30) the T-80's gas turbine sounds kinda similar to a high rpm turbine engine. Not exactly the same as in game, but it's plausible sounding. Also, especially lately, militaries have been investing a lot into airburst ammunition for tanks. Pretty much everyone has them now, though I think the Soviets were the first ones to use something like that in any large number (in the form of time fuse high-explosive shells) from a regular tank. They're useful for targeting fortifications and low-flying helicopters. I know the T-80U (or one of its subvariants) for one has a shell that can do this, and it's slaved to the laser rangefinder. The K2 also has something like this, and also has a top-attack munition which can similarly airburst.
Tracks in GTA V work the same way as in War Thunder: They don't Also, while the tube is of the same design, the Rh120 and the M256 are quite different guns. The M256 is mated to a different breech, gun mount and recoil mechanism and is designed to withstand much higher pressures and last longer before getting replaced. The gun breech itself was designed to be mated to both a 120mm and a 140mm, and can withstand much higher pressures than the breech of the Leopard 2. This, in fact, is why on the field manual of the M829 projectiles it states that you should only fire them from non-M256 guns in case of emergency as damage could occur to both the gun and crew.
Rockstar themselves said it was based off of the 2A4 and a simple google search would show you it’s a 1:1 recreation with rockstars style of copyright parody.
the "track links" on the front are actually supposed to be ice cleats you can see them on leopard tanks basically you install them every few track links for added traction on icy terrain
American M830A1 is a HEAT-FS round with a proximity detonation sensor designed to shoot down Helicopters. It is capable of being used from the modern 120mm M1A2 SepV3. The Chinese have a variant, but I can't recall if the Russians do
the reverse having a smaller turning circle is probably a similar reason it has truch engine noises, it's probably using the same controller just copied over and modified for the weight and maneuverablitiy they wanted out of the tank why make something new when modifying something you already have is good enough, quicker, easier, and therefore most importantly cheaper than making something unique and more accurate.
Hi, fellow tank enthusiast here(ALSO NOT AN EXPERT) "Track Links" in front of the hull at 5:45 are supposed to be track attachments found on Leopard tanks for moving on ice. Kinda like tyre chains for cars but for caterpillar tracks instead. Also at 6:43, while the barrel tube composition and the bore evacuator on the Abrams' and Leopard's gun are the same, pretty much everything else isn't. The Abrams' gun(designated M256 or M256A1[mostly just lighter variant]) uses a big ass spring for its recoil system while the Leopard uses a hydraulic recoil system(this is one of the reasons the Abrams can't carry the L/55 found on the Leopard 2A6 and beyond). Also, the Breech Block that the Abrams uses was the one designed for the RH140mm main gun, which gives the Abrams the ability to fire rounds with higher chamber pressure. This difference in chamber pressure allows the Abrams to fire more advanced APFSDS rounds, and during the 1990s resulted in the Abrams being capable of firing the M829A2 "Super Sabot" while the Leopard 2A4/5 could not, at the risk of destroying the breech. That said, they can fire each other's ammunition that aren't sabot(HEAT, HE, etc.). But for the most part yeah, its the same barrel. 14:50 If I recall correctly, the bow gunner's existence had to do with personal protection for the vehicle with the primary reason being that the Turret traverse usually wasn't good enough for a single Coax MG alone to be the tank's defensive armament against infantry and light targets. With the improvement of turret traverse drives in modern tanks, this became a non issue and so the Coax was deemed sufficient for personal protection. Loved the video, Loving the channel so far especially the one on Shermans(Fellow Sherman Lover also).
They definitely based the rhino a lot off of a leopard 2a4, very interesting for a US based game. Edit: maybe the thing you're thinking that are vision ports are Laser Detecting thingys lol
funny enough the round fired is the rpg round for the rpg if you could stop the round and look what ive seen to look like is the leo2a4 abrams( more like the xm1 in the rear non 'lifted' section) and the TTD the south african tank
I’m gonna make a guess I could be super wrong, but I think the Khanjali has the chassis of a Russian tank, maybe T-90? (If that is an actual tank I’m an aviation expert excuse my mistakes)
@@Stryker_1 no, the Khanjali is entirely based on the Polish PL-01 'stealth' tank concept. It's not even a real production tank, it was based entirely off a concept model.
On the topic on the ammunition exploding mid air, the Leopard 2PL has a rather unique type of ammunition designated DM11 (and other leopards can use a variant of it called DM31) that can airburst/point detonate
It's definitely made by someone who knows about tanks but doesn't understand the design aspect and the purpose of any modules and practicality. (Still uses ww2 tracks, rivet armor, weird driver hatch location etc)
Apart from gameplay reasons like limiting the range and showing the impact, the weird ammo type makes sense for the player. Aside from the occasional other Rhino the opponents the player will encounter are mostly cops on foot or in cars (for which HE is perfectly fine) and lots of helicopters. And since the player can't use the machine guns, giving him some ammo that makes using the cannon against aircraft a bit easier makes perfect sense
I got this in my recommended and I can see why. As someone who watches all the gamespot vids with Jonathan reacting to guns, I see you’ve gone for a very similar style and I love it!
I wish to add, to my knowledge the Abrams and the Leopard do not have exactly the same gun. The Abrams uses the 120mm L/44, and the Leopard uses the L/55, the Leopard's gun is longer, whereas the Abram's gun can handle pressure better, and uses DU sabot rounds, and while the Leopard can fire these DU rounds, they have a lot of wear on the gun itself. The Leopard does have a very effective Armor Piercing round, but it is not as effective as the Depleted Uranium round used by American Abrams. Overall, the two tanks have close enough to equal gun performance, with the L/55's higher velocity more or less making up for it's lack of the Abram's Depleted Uranium Sabot.
The fact they even bothered to model in things like vision ports and periscopes in this fictional tank is a little surprising to me cause I can count only so many times on how often in video games where they got a tank but there is little to no why for the crew inside to actually see things
30:15 the three big ones are. The 105 at the time was about the same as the 120 and wasnt really any better at the time and the us had more 105 ammo. Another reason was the armor was a better against ke then the Chrysler but was nowhere near as good against heat warheads such as ones used on rpgs witch were believed to be the primary threat and they didnt put the armor in the turret and didnt say so to lie about the tanks weight. The 2aV with its armor inside the turret is accually about the same weight as the Abrams is now and that was just absolutely unacceptable so they got mad and told them to get lost.
22:10 I think the term you are looking for is self-destructing munition, in other words, a mechanism to set the shell to explode so it doesn't go sailing off into the distance and blowing up somebodies house or car or what have you. And given the setting, even if the self destruct range is a bit scuffed, it does make sense when you consider how populated some areas of the GTA map are.
6:34 Not quite - The gun on the Abrams is called M256 and is not exactly the same gun as the Rh 120. The breech and recoil mechanisms are very different (M256 is more compact) and the barrel also isn't the same, as for example the MRS (muzzle reference sensor) is in different places on both of the guns. 6:51 To me it looks like the barrel shroud for the coaxial MG of the Abrams. 22:15 Well, there are rounds like this, for example the German DM11 HE-MP or the American M830 family of HEAT-MP rounds. They can be used as airburst rounds or even to engage low and slow flying targets, such as helicopters.
If you look at the Stuart and his versions you can clearly see that not all wheels are propelled, but good for you to mention it for all the GTA V 9yo (no front) to click in
What confuses me is the loader situation on this tank. The gunner is on the right and the commander on the left. Normally these two would be on one side to make more space for the loader. So does this tank not have one? That would explain the decently fast reload time
I'm surprised you didn't mention the blow out tops on the back of the turret, as well as the fact that the shells have no bullet drop, and that 120mm gun was a smooth bore, the reloading speed is to fast even for an auto loader, the fact that your character can control the whole tank single handedly, this looks like a four man crew tank with a loader a driver a gunner and a commander. There are a lot of things that are really cool about this tank but it really just is a piece of sh*t for me. One tank the you would love to look at is the just cause 4 warchief heavy tank. The only problem that I think you'll find with that tank is the 1.2s reload time. But JC4 has a 18inch railroad gun that can reload at the same speed. Still you should check it out! It would make a great video.

The tracks go under The drivers Hatch😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
He forgot how terrible the tank is, can’t even upgrade it for no reason. And the coax doesn’t even work
May I add that Artillery HE shells can often have proximity fuses so they explode just before hitting the ground so it has more destructive capability (including SPGs the M1019 I believe does have them for example)
Pretty interesting and well made, really wanna see what others tanks you're gonna do
like how the tank is breathing which leads me to believe its some sort of armored american animal.
12:38 I can forever not unsee that you climb into the left track
fun fact war thunder used to have barrel collilsion but people complained it made game too hard as they couldn't take their tiger down narrow ways, so it got removed.,..... i love barrel collision
You should do one for the other tank added in GTA a few years ago, the Khanjali, based on some Polish stealth tank concept
The abrams definitely isn't sneaking up on anybody being that loud
If the turbine engine sounds orgasmic, this guy really must like doing laundry 😄 Washing machine starting the spin was first thing that came to mind. Just heck of a lot louder.
People call us nerds for knowing “to much” about tanks but we aren’t nerds were Art Enthusiast
the reason is DEFINITELY NOT explosion = more damage
what it is is that explosions look freaking cool and make the action more intense
7:40 that is the trophy system (i think) not a viewport
I like anyone who puts a BT poster in the studio shot.
The rhino is basically a leopard 2A4
You can't tell what the coax machine gun would be externally. If you were to judge the Abrams based on the big external shroud you'd think it was an auto-cannon as well, when of course it's just an M240, but you can't tell based on the external shroud.
18:08
The Leopard 2 AEV 3 requires an ignition key to start the master switch, this key is interchangeable between vehicles but its still a key
fun fact, when you stop the time in GTA V when firing from the Rhino, it actually just sends an rpg round at a very high speed, so technically the game is correct with the explosion effect since the rpg uses heat warhead
The RPG uses multiple types of warheads. I think the one in GTA V resembles HE more than HEAT
Maybe I'm reading too much into it but the extra roof armor makes me think it was modeled after a sweedish leopard 2
17:27 The Abrams Gas Turbine Engine was originally used on many us aircraft which is why it does sound similar to how something like a Jet that is turning on its engines
the Rhino in GTA V visually seems to be a mishmash of the Leopard 2A1 and the South American TTD
When I saw the thumbnail, my brain went "M51" Im getting M3 Lee, M51, Leopard 2A4, and a few more.
well, the rivets could have been external ERA plating socket points like how the bradley looks without it's extra ERA attached
and also the Coax gun is pretty accurate, the appearance of the large coax barrel is actually the armored shroud
The K2 also has something like this, and also has a top-attack munition which can similarly airburst.
really great video! maybe do a video about the TM-02 Khanjali as well?
Tracks in GTA V work the same way as in War Thunder: They don't
Also, while the tube is of the same design, the Rh120 and the M256 are quite different guns.
Actually, we haven't fully gotten rid of riveted armor yet, as Italy's CIO Ariete uses that method still.
The reason you first think of the Leo 2A4 is because you've never heard of the TTD (Tank Technology Demonstrator) from South Africa
I reference the TDD in the video…
Rockstar themselves said it was based off of the 2A4 and a simple google search would show you it’s a 1:1 recreation with rockstars style of copyright parody.
I like how it's a leapored but without the composite armor
3:30 you can see on the texturing of the track there is something in place of the guide horns, it just inst 3d modeled onto it
the "track links" on the front are actually supposed to be ice cleats you can see them on leopard tanks basically you install them every few track links for added traction on icy terrain
American M830A1 is a HEAT-FS round with a proximity detonation sensor designed to shoot down Helicopters. It is capable of being used from the modern 120mm M1A2 SepV3. The Chinese have a variant, but I can't recall if the Russians do
the reverse having a smaller turning circle is probably a similar reason it has truch engine noises, it's probably using the same controller just copied over and modified for the weight and maneuverablitiy they wanted out of the tank
why make something new when modifying something you already have is good enough, quicker, easier, and therefore most importantly cheaper than making something unique and more accurate.
The battleblock theatre music in the background👌🏼
31:42 - okay, a bike helmet is not a good choice for bank robbery. I must to find something else
It probably is a hybrid of the Leopard 2A4, TTD and Type 90 as well as elements from other MBTs.
Hi, fellow tank enthusiast here(ALSO NOT AN EXPERT)
"Track Links" in front of the hull at 5:45 are supposed to be track attachments found on Leopard tanks for moving on ice.
I always used to make fictional tank designs on paper and in blender, like the e69 a cross between a German and a Soviet tank then some other
They definitely based the rhino a lot off of a leopard 2a4, very interesting for a US based game. Edit: maybe the thing you're thinking that are vision ports are Laser Detecting thingys lol
Dont forget that T34 sitting around a junk yard in los santos xD
funny enough the round fired is the rpg round for the rpg if you could stop the round and look
what ive seen to look like is the
leo2a4
abrams( more like the xm1 in the rear non 'lifted' section)
and the TTD the south african tank
Love the video, would like to see you tackle the Khanjali and Scarab tanks on GTA also!
@@MikoyanGurevichMiG21 cardboard slapped on CV90 basically
"we talk about tanks on my discord" having me on there would result in a few... warlords.
also nice, BBT theme.
Rhino has been used as the name for tanks in GTA's since GTAIII so it definitely isn't a reference to Rheinmetall lol
I always thought this tank looks a little more like the South African heavily modified Centurion tank (TTD tank).
If they made tanks more realistic in GTAV/online they’d become better; it would literally be a buff
0:01 Hi, my name is Eta, I like tanks. I... Really like tanks
One cool thing is the suspension, the tracks flow with the wheels
I'm not a tank nerd but my instinct looking at it is a tiger and abrams had a freaky up child
They can be used as airburst rounds or even to engage low and slow flying targets, such as helicopters.
if a TTD and leopard 2a4 had a baby but the rhino wanna grow up as a American Abrams tank.
That intro felt almost as long as waiting for food in the microwave
If you look at the Stuart and his versions you can clearly see that not all wheels are propelled, but good for you to mention it for all the GTA V 9yo (no front) to click in
What confuses me is the loader situation on this tank. The gunner is on the right and the commander on the left. Normally these two would be on one side to make more space for the loader. So does this tank not have one? That would explain the decently fast reload time
Abrams loaders hatch has periscopes miss my old job 😢 12:16
the rhino tank would be what the offspring of a japanese main battle tank, a Leopard, and abrams
There’s another tank in GTA five pretty sure it’s based off the new German tank
Now I'm interested in a "review" of the Khanjali GTA tank. Especially since it has a rail gun and a small crew compartment in the back
you should check the Khanjali Tank. It's in GTA aswell and based on the PL-01.
It could also be slightly based off the Type 90 Japanese MBT or the South African MBT that looks like a Leopard, I can't remember the name right now.
fun fact some cannon barrels are actually modeled in war thunder
