    HL1 Nihilanth final phase: *gets locked into using a weaker version of the same attack over and over again*
    BM Nihilanth final phase: *rains hellfire with an intense sense of fear and desperation*

    Although I applaud them for making a beautiful remake and enhancing the game mechanics, there are some subtle things that made Half-Life's atmosphere what it is that they should have kept. One example is the comparison at the beginning of the teleporter: look at Half-Life's version first. Look at that dreadful, endless empty black void in the background ripe for your imagination to manifest the most horrible things from the very depths of your mind. I recommend watching David Lynch talk about 'black'. Now look at BM's version: its a beautiful and peaceful vista with beautiful nebulae in the background and peaceful flying stingrays everywhere. Its a nice sight, but it lacks the "fear of the unknown" vibe. We see things very familiar to us, nebulae, sting/manta rays, a sun/star etc... This is just one example of many. Another would be at 0:23 Look at the creepy indifference in the face of the Nihilanth. The black voids for eyes are reminiscent of the emotionless eyes of insects or spiders. Now look at BM, his face looks super emotional and pissed off which makes him too human imo. It might just be nostalgia talking, but I'm not sure. Either way I'm glad they remade it into something of their own instead of just making it a graphical update...
    P.S. When you approach the teleporter in HL, you can hear the whispers of everything your fellow scientists and colleagues said to you during the game which just multiplies the eeriness. I can't tell if the kept that in BM...

    • @crispyjeb
      @crispyjeb  5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Thank you for writing in! I can totally understand the points you are trying to make & they are really good. I will take your recommendation and looks up that talk by Lynch (one of my favorite directors!). Also, you can hear the whispers of fellow scientist in BM version as well, you just can't hear them in my video due to the music.

      @@crispyjeb I just remembered that every outdoor area in HL had an skybox except that last bit with the teleporter. Once you get there, you can feel the heaviness of that blackness. There is nothing there but the ominous teleporter, the only way through is through it. But its cool what they did with BM as well, they make the teleporter visible from the start of Xen which is an interesting take on things similar to how the citadel was visible and looming throughout the majority of HL2

      Sometimes less is more, something Black Mesa doesn't get, everything has to be over the top, overly detailed with the action in many sections scaled up to a point of ridiculousness.

      @@antondavidovic3996 I personally always found the black skybox distracting, it looked rather fake and, as you said, all previous maps had skyboxes, so it felt out of place. It didn't really manage to convey the impression of a dark void of blackness because of how perfectly lit the platforms are.
      Also, I'm pretty sure the only reason Half-Life Nihilanth is emotionless is not because of a stylistic choice but purely because 1998 Goldsource didn't have the technology to convey facial expressions other than mouth movement.
      EDIT: One more thing, I really don' find the sight of the manta rays peaceful since we know these are alien crafts capable of destroying military gunships, I felt rather tiny and threatened walking among so many of them.

    Few things that I found lacking in Black Mesa Xen:
    1. The eerie atmosphere and utter alien look. The skyboxes in HL had these weird shapes and unreal massive geometry, in Black Mesa it looks like we're inside a nebula of some sort, like the Xen was somewhere in our plane of existence. It didn't look like some different dimension, like it did in HL. To me Xen seemed like a dimension made out of pockets of different spacetime, where only some harbored spacetime suitable for life to exist.
    2. Nihilanth didn't look as threatening. The boss fight was superb but the way he looked didn't look as scary as he did in original. Those holes where eyes and a mouth supposed to be with the cybernetic modification he had attached to signified that he may have been the slave who got out. As we know now, Nihilanth species were running from the Combine, so all that was done to this last of his kind almost seems similar to what would the combine do to the species they want to enslave.

    New Xen levels are epic, and I love their design. Xen levels were one of the few things that I did not like in original Half-Life, the were made in hurry and they are unpolished. Also in Black Mesa I like that threre are not many teleports between next stages, to most of them you are moving on foot. New Nihilanth fight is much better designed than in original game. The only things that I don't like in Black Mesa Xen levels are fight with Gonarch (I think it was unnecessary level in original Half-Life, I did not like it as well) and alien controllers fights on elevator stage.
    I played original Half-Life and its sequels since a very long time, but Black Mesa is very impressive remake of this game.

    While I think Nihilanth was better in the original Half-Life in terms of appearance (It looked much more terrifying), I found the battle itself really annoying. The fight against Black Mesa's Nihilanth was so much more fun and intense.
    Interesting how the entirety of Xen itself took up almost an entire third of my playthrough of Black Mesa. Not that I'm complaining. It was fun.

    I may be a half life fanboy when saying this but I'm kinda disappointed with how they changed the fight with Nihilanth. Visually it's incredible bar none but the mechanics of the fight feel like a step backwards. Rather than taking what valve made with the large arena and the different areas that Nihilanth teleports you to that all have unique and creative hazards and expanding on that, they just made the arena smaller, removed the different areas all together and just beefed up Nihilanth's attacks, all the while he keeps shouting the same line "now die!" at you. Nihilanth said and alluded to so much more with his dialogue in the original. Maybe I'm in the minority and people find the original fight tedious, but the new version just feels like they are trying to damage control what Valve created for a more casual approach rather than expanding upon it.

    • @GLBHemstreet

      Thanks for writing in, I appreciate what you're saying here.
      Having replayed the original boss fight recently, I found it very frustrating and cumbersome.
      Having to push, Shift+Ctrl+Space Bar+W, keys all at the same time to properly navigate the hazards he teleports you to was not very fun for me.
      Especially the part where he teleports you into the tall vertical shaft & you have to platform you way back up to the teleporter to get back to the fight.
      That part really bummed me out because it was so frustrating.
      Even though the BM version is simplified in it's mechanics, I found the experience more pleasant.
      Not to mention how visually and aurally stunning it is!
      Anyways, thanks for dropping by the channel, hope to see ya around some more!

    • @antondavidovic3996
      @antondavidovic3996 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I'm with you, I prefer the creepier tones of the OG Nihilanth, his look and his voice. I didn't find his teleporting attack annoying in the sense of a game mechanic, but in a sense that made me dread fighting him more, which is a good thing when portraying an eldritch god... It seems that new FPS games are in pursuit of what Doom 2016 has established. This fight does look entertaining and neat, but they turned an indifferent, insect-like eldritch god who communicates telepathically into an evil, brainiac mastermind-archetype who taunts the protagonist. This boss fight reminds me more of the Spider mastermind boss from Doom 2016 than the OG Nihilanth. Unfortunately we live in a time where subtlety is a thing of the past and instant gratification rules...
