Y'gotta keep in mind, not only is Luffy the son of the most wanted and dangerous man in the world who is in active rebellion against the world nobles, but he's also the sworn brother of the son of Gol D. Roger, has the backing of Shanks, the grandson of the strongest marine in history, was acknowledged and defended by Whitebeard, Whitebeards top commanders then publicly proclaimed that he had great potential, gained their allegiance essentially. Spearheaded the first break in of Impel down and following that with the first mass breakout, attacked Marineford and all that after basically being the cause of the destruction of Enies Lobby (making him the first and only pirate to attack the 3 pillars of the marine world) and having the only known crew capable of reading the poneglyphs. Blackbeard might've been the bigger threat in the moment but everyone in that war knew that Luffy if left to blossom can and will upstage the world

One of the greatest things about this saga is luffy after being op for the majority of east blue and pre alabasta island we suddenly crash into a wall, full speed (sabaody) with heavy examples of already playing over our league (w7 through thriller bark) then throw around like a boy, who goes into a storm being an ant (amazon lily, thriller bark, marineford) just to show the power of an ant can change the storm for a moment and then, he crash worse than before.
Truly a phenomenal arc for a protagonist.

the admirals, especially Akainu, have seen the insane potential of Luffy to being their Future's number 1 menace, and this was their golden chance to eliminate him while he's still not at his prime and also injured and vulnerable. at first it looks weird why they targeted an injured rookie like that, but as admirals, they could feel his MC energy.

Not only that, they saw his extremely strong will and that he possesses Kings Haki. And at that point he already : destroyed Enies Lobby and defeated the CP9, defected two Warlords,punched a celestial dragon, broke in and out of impel down and took part of the war of the best as a rookie and managed to increase the moral of experienced new world pirates. He managed to free ace. And he did all that at the age of 17 and within six months.
On that day he showed his potential to the world and while it gave hope to the pirates it made the marine fear what he may become one day.
While other shows were using this level of storytelling as their finale, Oda came in and declared it as ‘Just another arc’………Peak Fiction

Agree , even wano arc wasn't on the same level as the marineford .
- The arc was short, which was a really cool feature
- The comedy in this arc was legendary
- We lived with Luffy moments of stress, despair, sadness and everything
I don't know there is something about Marineford that makes it the best arc so far, maybe because we didn't know much about the characters and they were on a different level from the hero and the sudden interventions like Shanks and Luffy are what made it the best
As for wano, it was the length of this arc that spoiled it

Whitebeard declaring the one piece was real was a huge deal at the time, cuz a lot of people were starting to doubt if they were ever gonna find the one piece and doubting it was real, ace's execution was supposed to be a message from the marines saying this is what happens if you choose the pirate life, but whitebeard destroyed that plan by saying what he did as he died
Remember this Shanks just fought Kaido and bee lining it to Marineford in just a few days, came and stopped the war.
He understood that if Kaido were to come to Marineford, the current Marine is not ready to face him and if the Marine got destroyed there would be power imbalance. He did what he had to do, which is keeping the power balance in check after WB pirates collapsed.
It's not necessarily that Shanks just wanted to maintain balance. Based on what we know, it's more likely Kaido was going to either fight Whitebeard or both Whitebeard and the navy, not team up to destroy the navy.

The kid who successfully infiltrated and escaped THE Top Marine Prison. The kid who stormed the war and changed the tide of the fight with his sheer tenacity. The kid who STOOD BESIDE WHITEBEARD AND EARNED HIS RESPECT, as well as the respect of a Yonko crew. The kid who faced the 3 Admirals, the Fleet Admiral, and the Legendary Hero Garp, and Lived. The kid with powerful Conquer’s Haki. The kid who FREED ACE AGAINST ALL ODDS!
Yes other things should have been prioritized, but this kid was a menace, and definitely a threat best taken care of then and there.

Now re-watching all this made me realize how important Shanks "requesting" burial of WB and Ace really was.
If Shanks didn't give WB crew "a version of closure", some of WB crew might not be okay with it.
If WB crew, even just a portion of it, fought back to the navy, it would've ruined the truce.
Definitely not what they wanted but it's the best closure they could realistically ask for.
Shanks knows how to threaten and bargain. Understands both sides POV and exactly what to ask/not to ask.
Bro's just understands his role so clearly it's even frightening. Cleared the blood lust on both sides.
No wonder he's the one restoring balance of the world. He even stopped Kaido just to do that.

Yeah, again you sumarize very well how I felt the first time seeing that scene of the Admirals chasing Luffy rescue squad.
Maybe they had too much faith in Sengoku and Garp? Or is because they are proud dogs for the celestial dragons?
There's also a possibility that they were going after Luffy to take the problems by the roots, wiping any large pirate movement in the future or at least diminishing.

Just an opinion, I can see why you believe the marines won but I would also disagree because they could not extinguish the pirates hopes and terror: it lives on in the new generation. Blackbeard has Whitebeard's power, and Luffy seems to have inherited the will Whitebeard was talking about. The marines may have accomplished their major objective of executing Ace, but the pirates were able to fumble this unexpectedly. Not all was lost in this war.
Shanks had a little over 1billion berries when he pulled up early in the episodes
Shanks is awsome! I dont wanna spoil anything but if you manage to catch up to the newest episode you will see what shanks daughter looks like. Using her outfit as a reference and the fact he just told the world government what to do as you said you can assume what shanks background is before being a roger pirate. There is only 1 group of individuals that the world government follows orders from in onepiece. Lets see if you can figure it out. I cannot wait for more episodes to come out soon in the newest arc. It does have more awsome fightscenes and some heart breakers like ace in future episodes but it does get a bit slowed down in pacing causing episodes to go by too fast. Thats why the next few arcs are gonna take a while.
