If you're looking to move to underground bands, I cannot recommend Alkaloid or Aether Realm highly enough. In particular, The Sun, The Moon, The Stars by Aether Realm or Rise of the Cephalopods by Alkaloid
Some other ones I recommend would be Wilderun, Ne Obliviscaris, 1914, Archspire, Diablo Swing Orchestra, In Vain, Misery Signals, Native Construct, Persefone, or Zeal and Ardor. You wouldn't go wrong with any of them

I think a good song to check out is Passenger by Wilderun. It's a single from their upcoming 4th album, which judging by their previous releases, is going to be phenomenal.
Octavarium should be your next Dream Theater track. This is your "Tool: The Grudge" moment. As a Composer, you will LOVE it. Garranteed. You mentioned in the Dance of Eternity video the balance between Orchestral and Metal arrangements can be tricky. Octavarium NAILS it. Keep doing what your doing, see you tomorrow AWLRIGHT!

My favourite song of all time
The weird "ending" is not actually part of Panic Attack. Octavarium is based on the notes in western music, with all the songs representing F, G, A, etc and little interludes between representing sharps and flats. In the CD version, they're done with "gap tracks" which are separate from the actual songs but when they get ripped into streamable formats, they get tacked on the end of the track before. They're technically their own little separate entities in the key between each of the main songs.
And I thought I knew everything about that album.

@@LanguagesWithJamie On Octavarium, pretty much every song that doesn't "end"right away. Like, if you hear some kind of weird sound effect or ambiance that doesn't belong, those are they.
In between The Root of All Evil and The Answer Lies Within (birds chirping and whatnot). In between The Answer Lies Within and These Walls... This one is subtle but the last note of the song gets slowly pitch shifted up a note. In between These Walls and I Walk Beside You, the whole thing with the clock. And the final one (since we already mentioned Panic Attack) is in between Never Enough and Sacrificed Sons. All the artificial Arabic style chatter. If you want to see where these actually start, Google the back cover of the album if you don't own it. They have the true track lengths on them. You'll notice a difference to what's shown online.
@@NaanProphet thanks for the in depth comment! I love Octavarium and I will now go and relisten to the album and try and listen out for these endings. I have noticed in a few songs the endings are abrupt, do you know the reason behind Pull me Under’s ending which ends abruptly? On Spotify it’s followed by Another Day but they don’t flow into one
@@LanguagesWithJamie Yeah, so on the original demo for Pull Me Under (then called Oliver's Twist... Which actually featured the entire Erotomania solo in it if you can believe it), the song fades out. The band felt this was an unsatisfying way to end the track but never wrote an ending they were happy with. So, Mike Portnoy, who is a massive Beatles fan, took inspiration from the song I Want You (she's so heavy), where they literally took scissors to the tape as it was running and cut it. Kevin Moore was behind this as his lyrics dealt with death being a very sudden and permanent thing. So that's what they did.
The isolated bass, guitar, and drum tracks are on youtube and are wild to hear on their own!

Title track is truly a masterpiece. It will alter your perception of the compositional ability of the band. From the Pink Floyd inspired intro to the orchestral crescendo at the end. A truly different experience from what you've heard so far. I can tell by the comments, I'm not alone in recommending it.

Dream Theater - Space Dye Vest
something different most people don't expect. A real gem of a song.
This album was heavily thought out, lots of recurring themes around the numbers 8 and 5, I think each track is in a different key ascending through the album, and each one has a intermissionesque ending that helps guide the change into the next one. I may not be 100% on that so don't quote me, but this is one of my favorite albums of theirs. It's definitely a masterpiece with octavarium being the grand finale that ties it all together, even using samples from the other tracks in the song.
Please listen to octavarium or even the full album of you feel up to it.

I think you are right, at least in some manner, about the themes of numbers and something like that, those guys can be really technical and profound. Also, if you listen to the instrumental, you can feel the "panic attack" by the claustrophobic feeling of the harmonies and melodies, the odd time signatures and the changes of speed. This is album is full of this, and don't even need to talk about Octavarium.
What’s cool is the intermissions (I think) are representing the black keys on the keyboard, and the songs themselves are the white keys.
If you’d like to continue with Dream Theater, I think their song Octavarium is their magnum opus. It’s incredible! It’s a compositional and musical masterpiece, and I’d love to watch you enjoy it. :)

I do recall them calling the working title of a Systematic Chaos song (maybe Prophets of War?) something like the "muse song", so clearly they were somewhat inspired by their sound in the mid 2000s.

I want to remember something about several members of the band binging Muse at the time they did Octavarium. I can't remember the details, but it's something along those lines. Makes sense when you hear a bunch of the passages in a few of the tracks on there.

What a pick! So many people probably got introduced to Dream Theater around this time, and Panic Attack and Octavarium were rotated around quite a bit when this came out (I remember playing Panic Attack on Rock Band 2 quite frequently!)
I have always loved Petrucci and Portnoy as musicians, and have never had a less than stellar experience with listening to Dream Theater.

If it wasn’t for Rock Band and those cheat codes to get the super hard songs while stuck on easy mode, I wouldn’t be in a band now. DT is goat
That sequence at the end was actually there by design as it's in the key of C# being in between songs in C and D. The album itself is a cycle from F up the scale to F again and these little interludes are the black keys in the sequence.
This song was my introduction to Dream Theater. I was just starting college and the game Rock Band just came out and I was addicted to it. I remember hearing this song and just being blown away. It’s been 13 years and I’m still a big fan.
The tension in this song is sooo high. Harmonic tension that goes away to be replaced by rhythmic tension then to tonal tension and back to harmonic, and it never quite resolves even at the very end. It just keeps building and building, and finally bursts at the last note. Brilliant.
Mike Portnoy is still one of my favorites drummers - He always found that nice balance between his "Big 4" influences - Starr, Bonham, Moon & Peart - as the song dictated ... And this is a great example of how he was able to combine the prog technicality with his powerful pound-the-crap out of the kit side. He also (as you may be aware) has done lots of side projects - mostly with Neal Morse - so I hope some Spock's Beard or Neal Morse [Band] stuff eventually makes it on here. Also, in case no one else mentioned it -"Octavarium" was the last album recorded at the legendary Hit Factory in NYC before it was turned into condos, so you're talking about a top notch engineering staff.

I remember playing this song on Rock Band for hours on the Xbox 360, it was so hard.
A gigantic band I discovered some years ago (that has so little views it's sad) and is just incredible is Sun Caged, and their album "The Lotus Effect" is a masterpiece of songwriting, storytelling through music and some Dream Theater into it too.

Ok now I'm digging through all your DT stuff haha! Yes. They traditionally have written a LOT of content about mental illness of all kinds. Wsy ahead of their time for spreading awareness for mental health. The second CD of Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence is a 48 minute suite about a story of teenagers learning to grow up with six different mental illnesses.
I remember the first time I listened to dream theater was when I was in middle school actually. I had heard Mike Portnoy play fantastic drums on Avenged Sevenfold's Nightmare album after The Rev had passed away in 2009 (RIP Jimmy). Octavarium was a surprising track for sure but 13 year old me wasn't bored by a 24 minute long track. I would definitely recommend The Soulcollecter by Bloodbath (Mikael Åkerfeldt of Opeth singing) or The Shattered Fortress off Dream Theater's Black Clouds and Silver Linings album.

Dream Theater was my first real intro to the larger world of metal, and I used to love all their stuff. I grew out of them as I got older though, and haven't been really interested in them much anymore.
Octavarium was the first album I heard, and it still holds a special spot in my memory. This was a nostalgic listen.
Going deeper you say? Love the idea. The metal underground is vast and almost never-ending.

As far as 'new' goes, I think you could dive a bit deeper into some of the alt rock/indie scene; i.e. later incubus (dig, black heart inertia), Death cab for cutie, Wet leg, Silversun Pickups (Lazy Eye, The Pit), Cage the Elephant (Back against the Wall, Mess Around, Shake me Down). These bands don't get the attention they deserve, especially from a composition standpoint, minus incubus, but overall I think it would be an interesting way for you to break up some of your other reactions

Just to think, if it weren't for this channel covering this band a few times now, I would have thought Dream Theater was a one hit wonder with "Pull Me Under" instead of just too advanced for mass radio play . 🤙🎶Now you got me singing Mr. Mister - Kyrie and yes I had to search for a bit to find the song think you are referring too. I couldn't remember the name of the band , the name of the song, or any of the real words ...and SoundHound didn't know what I was humming and gave me some Hispanic music...But 80's and Bassist singer narrowed it down. I know you've got many songs to get through, but 2 songs by DT i can wholeheartedly reccomended are: "under a glass moon" and "the glass prison". They've inspired my guitar playing for years!

If you want something obscure but compositionally interesting, you should check out Naxatras. I highly recommend Sun Is Burning, I Am The Beyonder, or All The Stars Collide Into a Single Ray (my favorite).

You can’t touch one song from Octavarium without listening to the whole album from the very start to the very end. It’s a post-modern masterpiece with a lot of references and homages, so much, you wouldn’t believe this “ending” that represents C# note (and the song is in the key of C) has intentional reference to Pink Floyd inside. The album was made to be the pinnacle from which you can observe rock music as if it’s the valley behind your back, so it doesn’t surprise me you hear other stuff in this music.
Growing up, I always wanted to learn drums. Unfortunately, I've lived in apartments most of my life, which aren't friendly to drums. When I was finally old enough to join band class in elementary, I was still denied my percussive dreams because apparently I needed a couple years of piano training first :( I didn't have many chances to get behind a kit over the years, until the game Rock Band came out.
At that point I was already a huge fan of the developers previous game Guitar Hero, and had mastered the fake guitar enough to get top scores on every song at the highest difficulty. When I heard they were making a game with drums, I was chomping at the bit to play it. At that point, I was 17, had a job and could get the game and nothing was going to stop me.
When it finally came out, I played that game religiously, gradually practicing every song and working my way up through every difficulty until I could start to pass songs in expert mode. Then the sequel came out, and the top song to pass on drums was this one here. It took months of practice and memorization, but eventually I was able to pass this song consistently. I still remember the day when the shifting patterns finally clicked and I was able to transition from one section to another seamlessly, and I could finally get full stars on it, and to this day this is still one of my favorite songs to listen to... and I still can't help but tap along to this one every time I hear it.
This song was a top choice on my gym playlist! I saw DT in Phoenix back in the mid 90’s & again in Baltimore about 5 years ago. Seeing them again in Austin, Tx in 3 weeks. 👍🤘
For the more obscure section of your new year I recommend some instrumental bands: blotted science and octopus (the latter a chilean band)

The title track Octavarium is a must for sure!!!! Just allow yourself some time, as it’s 24 minutes long. But we’ll worth the listen!!!
If you ever want to do a super extended show, think about decomposing "De Futura" by Magma you are gonna love the bass and drum interplay.
Any Magma is a worthwhile choice.

If you’d like to explore more obscure stuff, I’d like to recommend Tribulation! They’re doing some pretty unique stuff. Not nearly as technical as a band like dream theater, but they create a great atmosphere and have a really fresh sound.

The next album after this one, Octavarium, has the ~40min title track that is about that legacy band "established sound" and is that ok, and then all the bands it's based on, the idea of being sort of trapped in this established sound either because your fans expect it or because you are so used to it or because you've solidified your influences and then ultimately accepting it to some degree.
At lest that's how I've seen some reactions to Octavarium. I really great classical composer's reaction to it was great.

- Falling Away, by a band called Mordred. Very underrated band from the 90s with metal/trashy/funky style and a bit of scratch/samplers in theyr songs. The guitar solo in this song is tottally amazing. (you can analyze better than me, lol)
- Unconditional (or any song), by a band called Prong. Songs by this band are well know by it's amazing riffs by Tommy Victor. The drummer from first records (including this) is a beast. (you can analyze better than me, lol 2)
