    Ill admit I may be a biased Larry fan, But he always amazes me when he came in on his second run after the keyboard break was a perfect example of how he like VERY few others personify simple brilliant melody and yet still use technical scale work with perfect moderation of both. arts.

    Came out in about 1983, can't believe its already been almost 25 years. Sounds as clean and fresh as the first time I heard it crusing hwy 35 in a downpour, way back when...such good memories...

    Larry told me this story on tour.......he also told it in an interview. "The melody of my song Strikes Twice is verbatim from a song that Johnny Smith recorded, called Jaguar. Well, I had that record as a kid, and when I wrote Strikes Twice I didn't know I had [unconsciously used] Johnny Smith's melody. But when I discovered it was a Johnny Smith melody, I called him and paid him royalties."

      Wait! You sound like those Jimmy Page fans who have never even meet him but make up weird stories about what they never actually heard the person say. Good story man! But, come on! You DO NOT know Larry. Buh ha ha ha ha

    Apart from the amazing skills, you get the sense that Carlton is a real lovely guy.

    The quote of the Johnny Smith song was intentional. Carlton cut his teeth on Smith and other cats when he was learning.

    Yes,, you're right,, the opening lines are taken from Johnny Smith's "Jaguar" most certainly! But, the song bears no other resemblance! Many song writers do some plagiarizing,, because sometimes there's a song, "within" a song, or a piece of melody, and so, it was for Larry. I have done the same with at least 6 writers pieces,, including LARRY!! But I don't ever intentionally "steal" anyone's songs,, believe it or not,, there IS a difference,, albeit a similarity!!!

    Would be interested to know the Saxophone player’s name?

  • @DannyELoi
    @DannyELoi 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I know that is Terry Trotter on keyboards because when he is soloing he starts to go into that playing the exact notes with both hands a couple of octaves apart, I mean that is his thing. I can't tell who the drummer is. Not Vinnie, not Toss Panos, or Tom Brechtlein. Who is the bass player?

    • @JoEsp
      @JoEsp 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      John Ferraro on drums and John Pena on bass

    I'm amazed to see the first theme is a full plagiary of the Jonnhy Smith song called "Jaguar" (1952). I loose a bit of respect for the guy to not mention that... :(

      Seems like he did own up to according to above commenter Gregg K and payed Johnny Smith royalties for it.

    Ripped off from Johnny Smith. Not only same melody; same key, tempo.

      He paid Johnny for the rights, after the fact. It was a mistake, LC said.
