- This is part 1 in my series of loft conversion videos where I'll be showing each stage of my loft conversion and bringing you the viewer along for the ride. In part 1 I provide an overview of my loft conversion plans, I show me breaking into the roof for access, removing old insulation, removing lime mortar from old lath and generally clearing the loft ready for the next stage of fitting the new joists.

You could use 3/4" ply packers on top of your walls to raise the joists above the old ceiling plaster. Saves loads of messing and meets regs
I did use packers which you can see in Part 2. But the mortar was so thick it need removing and as you'll see in later video it's well worth it as it makes a much cleaner working environment and less weight on the ceiling. I filled a whole builders bag with the mortar I removed. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching.

I have a daughter, a dog, a full time job and this isn't the full time job! I try but one a fortnight is all I can get done these days. It takes a lot of time filming, editing etc and trying to do the actual job in hand. Thanks again for watching and hopefully the vids won't disappoint!

As someone going through it a video on installing velux windows (from inside only if possible) when to board and when to put up stud work vs installing the insulation boards and plasterboard above and how to route cabling/plumbing, would all be great!!

Hi Paul, I'l be filming it all hopefully in the order that I do it so maybe some ideas for you in future videos. How and what order you do things is often up to you really. I'l be doing my insulation from the inside as I'm re-slating the whole roof. I need the new roof sorted asap then I can take my time with the internal stuff once the roof is watertight. Hi since having a loft conversion 2 years ago my house is cold in winter they didn't add metal wire gauze in the flooring used my old insulation and after using wall insulation I think celetex they simply added the plaster boards they didn't use silver quilt and then use silver tape to make it air tight I wanted to know how you did it before plaster boarding it internally thank you

Hi Pouse, I have a loft which I want to use as storage and occasional office accessed by loft ladder. The headroom is about 1.9m from floor joists. Joists are 3x1.5 inch. There is a central support wall and spans are about 3m from c/l of support wall to each outside walls.
So looks like I need to strengthen the existing joists, similar to yourself? Did you have a structural survey and cals done for the floor joists? Like you I don’t want to compromise headroom too much.
Mine however is not going to be a permanent habital area.

Timescale.....it's still not finished! Joking aside I got a lot done in a few weeks, but with family, kids, full time job I always knew this would just be done in spare time weekends. I also re-roofed the house which you don't need to do with a loft conversion. I painted the house and did all new soffits, fascias etc. So difficult to say as I've had months off at a time also. If you've got kids etc it's not always plain sailing when living in the property. But about two years in total on and off. Everything I've done has come in at around 14k but that will vary according to what part of country you live I guess and material prices. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching!

Did you do any drawings for this? I’m interested to understand your planning process and building controls etc.
I drew what I wanted roughly then took all the measurements. Structural engineer did calculations and structural drawings. I applied for a building notice with building control then started work. Building control inspect at key stages of the build. Thanks for watching. 👍

Hey Pouse, love the videos and finding them really insightful. Random question, I have a end terrace house that has previously had a loft conversion and there is a single window dormer letting light in. I was thinking of making it a double to let more natural light in as all my (terrace neighbours) have double window dormers aswell. Do you think I would need building control to be involved just to make the dormer slightly bigger? As I don’t plan on making any other alterations than that. Keep uploading as they are a big help!
Best bet is to speak to building control. In theory yes you prob do need to speak to them as you are potentially changing the structure of the dormer, but in practice, if you know what you're doing, you can strengthen the timbers above the new window. If in doubt seek advise. Building control are usually very helpful. Best of luck with it.

Crazy idea, just keep the dormer and simply add a roof window, dual aspect will provide plenty.ty of light. No inspectors, cheaper, quicker and way better. You'll have two views too. My advice butty

I would be really interested to see your architects plans for this build, I am nearing completion of my own loft conversion (DIY) and I was told multiple times over that the weight of the roof and floor can not under any circumstances be directed to solely the original load bearing walls without any form of central reinforcement i.e flitch beams in my case or steels. Your house layout must be perfect for them to allow this.
Hello both. The structural engineer has designed the joists to carry any additional load. Stating that calculations are unique to each project is obvious. Old houses have different sized everything, hence why building control sign off is required to make it a habitable room. I haven't used an architect as I don't need one. Building control are happy with the calculations. This conversion has gone via the route of a building notice not a full application where the work will be inspected periodically by an inspector. The gap between me and the neighbour is being blocked up on top of the solid brick wall that lies below separating my house from next door. You can watch this in my future videos. As for electrical work, in the UK it can be carried out by the homeowner if inspected by a qualified competent electrical tester and inspector, or if you pay building control extra for them to send an electrician to inspect the work. Fair play mate! If building control are happy then that's all that matters and yeah I've done my own electrical work in the loft as well, however, finding a 3rd party that are happy to inspect it is a royal pain in the arse, even building control couldn't find anyone, took me around 3 weeks to find someone willing to do this for me, still saved a load of money though.
Will be interesting to see if they make you do all the stuff they asked me to do like putting chicken wire between the joists to hold up insulation if there is a fire and stuff like that.
If you do get stuck on anything that you want a second opinion for sling us a message I might be able to help in some way :)

Many engineers wont quantify the load bearing characteristics of a 'solid' old Victorian stone wall because they are actually blocks of granite, slate etc filled with lime mortar that has perished. As a builder we have to be so careful with dealing with theses walls because once the bond has broken then you have Jenga on your hands.
Great videos but I do wonder how many of the viewers have tried to build along these lines just to find out that engineers will not quantify the structural requirements?
If you're doing it 'legitimately' through building control, submitting an application or building notice and therefore requiring sign off as a 'habital room' then you will require structural calculations to submit to your local authority building control officer as part of the build. These will be done by a structural engineer who should check these things first. I've had my house in pieces in the past so I know what materials and foundations are present and submitted calculations as part of my application. So I completely agree with you but I guess if people do anything on this scale without the correct research then on their head be it! A quick call to your local authority building control department will give you all the answers you need and mine were very helpful. Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching 👍

I can tell that you are a sound geezer just from the videos. I used to build all my lofts from timber and to be honest still would if I could. The trouble is that engineers are doubling all the sizes to cover 'the just in case' scenario that their insurers worry about. Some of the old inspectors look at the steels I have to fit now and scratch their heads in WTF style motions. I am putting so much over-engineered weight up there I expect the bloody house to sink one day and the clients 'loft' is now a bungalow!!

These slates are very old but the modern equivilant are fibre cement. They are man made 'slate'.

Do you need planning permission to begin a loft cnversion?
Depends what you are doing. You have a lot of questions. Best to read the planning.gov.uk guidance and the building regs guidance online. Then speak to your local planning department and building control who will answer all your questions. Planning is dependent on where you live and building regs are different in different parts of the country.

i suggest you to wear goggles or a full face mask when you do that type of work, also a bunny suit and some gloves for good measure
I wore an asbestos graded mask which was good, bit hot at times. Trouble with goggles is they kept steaming up from the mask so I couldn't see what I was doing. Thanks for the feedback and thanks for watching.

Im a new subscriber, the content of this series of loft conversions vids is exactly what Im looking for, but can tell right off the bat this horrible "TH-cam standard" style of violently ramming loud music into the smallest gaps in voiceover is going to drive me mental....its only slightly better than the "constant thrum" where the music plays constantly underneath conversation like tinnitus. WTF has gone wrong with the world that music is now noise pollution and ear garbage? Oh well, heres to many hours of listening on volume 1/10 with the closed captions (nearly) translating every other word.

Hi all, i have watched the key videos here and in a nut shell i would STRONGLY advise any one not to follow this guidance. I commend the guy for effort and giving it his best. I'm certain that if he had 6 months experience, with a good specialist team, these videos would be very different; With the right training he would make a good specialist. Please please please leave these projects the the specialists, I'm just trying to help the general public from getting sucked into a D.I.Y build from convincing wrong advice. For the record i did enjoy the videos.
P.s i'm not looking for a challenge to tear down and explain my concerns but i'm happy to give a sensible amount of guidance if any one is interested in taking on this type of works.

Thanks for the comment Adrian. I'm not trying to convince people to embark on a DIY loft conversion, this is more me just documenting my build. If I were to to it again of course there are things I may do differently but remember the way I went about this was to suit working around my full time job and a family all living in the house. If I had more man power and time I probaly would have ripped the roof off and built a new one. But bear in mind my conversion has come in at a fifth of professional quotes to do more or less the same, and I managed to re-slate the roof, insulate it, renew all soffits and facias, and paint the house all at the same time. So it was more than just a loft conversion for me. Having someone do it would be money well spent ....if I had the money! Hope that clears a few things thing up. Best of luck!
Why what’s up with it
Hi, my main concern is the structural design of the dormer. ( missing ridge beam as primary concern). If you understand the requirements for this beam or equivalent supporting in other ways( more costly and time consuming) this is a key element. adding new rafters to the hip timbers is not the best way to approach this( remove existing hips and fully extend existing rafters). The details go on, I don't want to do a tear down as I considder that approach offending. The points I made should be enough for you to consider professional help even if it dose cost more money. It's only when the full picture is completely understood when the cost of these projects is truly recognised. I agree there is a price to pay for the knowledge as well as the materials, if things go wrong it would have worked out a small price to have paid.
I'm happy to advise on details for your own project.
Again my respect to the self builder for his efforts.
