Howard Jones is why I wanted to do vocals in the first place. This was the first song I ever heard by them and I knew I would love him forever. I already know how to sing, but now I know what sort of approach he took because of you. I’m one step closer to covering one of my all time favorite songs.
The tuned part at the end is actually Adam singing i believe. His "Backing" Vocals are always heaviliy tuned. Not that he cant sing, but its part of the Sound.
He definitely autotunes his studio vocal tracks, but I don't think it's too "heavy". His natural voice sounds a lot like he is autotuned. He hits pitches quickly with barely any flair in between. You can hear it a lot in his acoustic performances on youtube.
I never knew I needed a video like this today. I was literally just listening to some Killswitch Engage up until a friend of mine sends me this video my way. Such great timing. Howard’s got a unique voice within the metal genre. You could just listen to a song he’s featured in (that doesn’t have a music video) then you’ll be like yep, that’s Howard Jones. His vocals are very memorable and nostalgic to me at least.
This channel brought me to a hard conclusion that I have to relisten everything I've heard in my life in separate tracks. I hope this channel grows significantly, this type of content deserves millions of views. It would've been great to see such a video of Protest The Hero.
Since you reacted to this song, I highly recommend checking out "The Blade" by SION (Jared Dines and Howard Jones' project). Maybe you'd be able to score isolated vocals for that song as well, and be able to react to a more recent version of Howard's vocals. Dude's screams have just got more velvet over the years. And his cleans are still soothing as hell (also Jared is a really dope guitarist)
Dude, I've been on the cusp of being able to scream for the better part of a year by just exploring my voice on the drive to and from work. Never looked into a tutorial but the way you broke it down there it just kinda snapped into place...I can scream now and project it loudly. Thank you hahaha tomorrows drive is gonna be fun :D
Chris thank you for this series man! You’ve been the biggest factor in demystifying so many aspects of aggressive vocals that I’ve always wanted to know more about. You’ve quickly become one of my favorite people on TH-cam
Idk why I was afraid he wouldn't sound as good acapella. When I paused to write this, I realized my heart was pounding. Chris, your ability to re create the electronic and the physical aspects of this so easily is astonishing. Stg I'ma get there someday
Hey Chris, I'm enrolled in your Vocal course love it and love your vocal analyses! for me as a bass, howard jones is my absolute favourite singer of all. I love Ronny James Dio, I love Dee Snyder, but none of them touches me so deeply with those creamy, gentle vibratos! I will train to use some of his approaches. thank you so much!
Watching this video again... So cool, getting deeper into your material and courses step by step and I am really feeling(!) and hearing the difference in my voice and singing! It took me more time than I thought, but I had to unlearn lots of bad habits, and discipline myself with healthy ways of singing. I am now able to do the clean voice with the compression and the screaming without destroying my throat! Thank you so much!!!!
howard is a huge influence, love these breakdowns. btw i bought the course with spencer: awesome, super insightful and a vocal production exposé. getting a lot out it even with a good amount of experience 10/10 would rec
If you are able to get master stems for their newer songs, I would also love a video analysing their original (and now also current) singer Jesse. Would love to see their different approaches to both singing and screaming.
i found you i think about a year ago wanting to get better and learn how to scream and I watched so many people trying to find what works out of everyone you were the best and I'm no where near perfect I wouldn't say I'm good yet but I can say I have gotten so much better in just a year and I will keep watching your videos every new one you put out and see whats in it and try things and find something new and every time I can I sing or scream or a mix of something chris liepe thank you so much you are the best please keep going don't stop and keep learning other things an show people like me and many others we love you
3:50 THANK YOU! I progressed so much after letting go of that notion. But I did it as a "screw this" move, after landing on your channel and learning so much. It wasn't deliberate. You're the best, Chris!
These analysis videos are just magic. So insightful and I learned so much from this one. The End Of Heartache has long been a favourite album of mine. Thank you very much for putting this content out there, you are a legend!
That was so very intense! Have you heard the Legends of Tomorrow version of "Ever fall in love"? Look up "zari 6x03", it's much quieter and the tempo picks up a lot, and it's amazing that they use all the fluctuations of the original version, and still make it more epic and meaningful.
Ooh another good one imo would be Shaun Morgan of Seether. Dude has killer rasp and incredible vocals even live! His screams and harsh vocals have great anger behind them. Another one would be Jesse Leach also of Killswitch (currently) he has an incredible ability to scream but make it understandible, great articulation. I know people crapped on him in the past but after his surgery for his nodule, he has an incredible sound.
Studio outakes in bonus disc of Alive Or Just Breathing reveal Howard Jones technic in scream performance. More like Cookie Monster. Great video brother keep em comin
Really interesting content. To be honest, I find clean singing more challenging at the moment, but while I'll probably watch some of your past analysis I'd still like to see some future deathcore coverage. Bands such as Slaughter to Prevail, Black Tongue, Mental Cruelty, etc. There are many reactions to them on TH-cam, but none with isolated vocals (if it's even possible), so that'd be nice.
Great video as usual, Chris. I'm a follower. Producing my songs is a bit easier since I've known your work. Thanks a lot for everything! By the way, I used to think that Killswitch Engage had two people singing the different parts (normal and screams) haha
@@GTORT Adam did take part in the action during the Howard era, but most of the time it would be Howard using his cleans and screams throughout songs. He’s one of the most notable metal vocalist in the game who could do that flawlessly, especially during live performances.
@@heelgill right. The way I read OPs comment is that they though Killswitch had two people both singing and screaming. What I replied was meant to clear up the interpreted confusion. Adam and Howard both sing, Adam has been singing since AOJB. Adam didn't start screaming on records (afaik) until DTD. So everything on EOH and ADD, screamwise, is all Howard.
@@GTORT Okay, yeah I see what you mean with the Adam thing. Before DTD, most of the time, Adam brought extra vocals to the table, especially for choruses and such and such. "Reject Yourself" would be a good example of that. His backing vocals alone throughout ADD showcases that.
Amazing! Your vocal analysis are soooo good! Check band Normandie, and vocalist Philip Strand. It would be awesome if you could analyze him. Im sure there is a lot to talk about! Again thank you, for another amazing content!
Awesome video! And the quality of the isolated vocal tracks is so good, you can actually tell the lower vocal harmonies were made with Adam D... I actually covered this song, would've loved to have seen this before..!
Holy shit you are good. Im not that much of a singer, but played guitar / trumped for a long time. The demo you did when talking about the larynx, gudt damn x)
Hi Chris. My name is Kellan. I love Killswitch. I have a visual impairment. And I’m just curious. I love the heavy metal screaming. Could someone please explain to me how they do that with their voice? Could you also do a vocal analysis for a farewell song.
It was really interesting to see that breakdown with the production. I've been told time and time again I have the Howard Jones sound and I didn't even realize I was incorporating some of the same techniques. But, they are my favorite band so it makes sense. Thanks for doing what you do man.
You need to check out Eskimo Callboy's song "We Got the Moves." And please react to it live. It's got such a variety of things: low speech, screams, head voice, mixed... It's got so much to break down, plus seeing you react to the over-the-top-video would be pretty fun.
Awesome! I need to get better at all the scream things, but working on :) Kills witch is awesome and I wlalways wanted to be instructed, how to get close to this sound ^^
Hey Chris, another amazing video thanks so much for doing this it's really great to have a breakdown of vocalists with a deeper baritone voice like this, I know there is some controversy with his lyrical content but I would love an analysis on Ivan Moody too I really enjoy some of the things he does with his voice and in the way of the fist hes got some pretty raw screams and the song Far From Home always gets me too. Also the low harmonies at the tail end of each chorus line with the autotune style effect on it sound like they are sung by the guitarist Adam there is a similar effect used in the song My Curse which is much easier to hear in the end of the song in the music video version where the line "There is love" is sung instead of screamed by Howard. I think Adam has used that effect live in the past as well. P.S. Are you using a mix to hit the higher note in "Seek Me"? I just can't get there in my chest.
Chris thank you so much for this video and your great explanation, you have an amazing technic and voice! But about those screams - i think Howard uses more fry type of the screaming then that yelling scream, fry much more easier to realise. Sorry my english
@@chrisliepe yes, it's the same for almost every your video, it's really "pro". I'm a bass and for me impossible to kick those G note that you sing there. But i saw your video about where you explain how to sing higher if you're baritone and it gives some hope that i can move higher than high F.
Have you checkout out the singer from demon hunter? If you like Howard I believe you’ll enjoy the way the frontman goes from clean to distorted even in a live setting.
Late to this party, but having not heard this song before and so not being biased toward a performance, I actually prefer Chris’s voice on this song. Sorry, Howard! ;). None the less, can always pull out lots of little nuggets.
What Chris is doing for the culture of metal is phenomenal. Unlocking Pandora's box.
Thats a fact!

Hope you enjoy! His screaming approach is so rangy and challenging... SO cool and inspiring too!

Very little to no autotune for Adam. He naturally can make his voice sound like it has autotune on it. Ive been listening to his voice for years.
Chris is probably the best vocal instructor on youtube. buyed a course from him and wasn't dissapointed.
Agreed. Bought his course with Spencer Sotelo, and I still revisit it now. Excellent tutor.
Mind if I ask what you bought and your thoughts?
I agree. I've learnt alot and my vocals has gone alot better. And I've met some great friends on here. Thanks Chris
Been waiting for some good money to come in but buying his vocal course after. And agreed best vocal coach on youtube.
Howard is easily one of my top 5 favorite metal vocalists of all time
he is a god

JUST listened to ksw for the first time in years yesterday and thought it'd be awesome if you did something like this for Howard. Awesome!!
I guess it was so awesome I had to do awesome^2.
Nice job!! Howard is a beast
You ROCK total respect!!!!
This guy definitely knows what his talking about
The absolute Man!!!
Awesome breakdown
wow..what the best education we need to know about voice's explaination between studio production and real voive tone...nice job bro🔥👍👍👍👍
Many many thanks

At around 8:40 when Howard sings "This Distance", do you think that's an intentional bend? Could it be a hard autotune bend?
Ya, I was going back and forth on that too. I think its a combo. I think he performed it and then they 'enhanced' it (please note the quotes :) )
Always, please react to Rory Rodriguez from Dayseeker, thank you so much, Chris!!
