    Another memory for me watching this. My ex used to make gulyásleves too. So delicious. Never had gypsy roast but that big bowl of pickles made me smile. Along with the chillis she used eat were the copious amount of gherkins she ate too. She went through jars of the stuff in the short time we lived together. That was around 12/13 years ago and I doubt I have bought another jar since. Great video.

      Mrs Greeno isn't fond of vinegar, but give her a bowl of gherkins and all of a sudden they can disappear quicker than if Paul Daniels were in the room!

    Hi Greeno. Gyr looked like an absolutely lovely city. That Ghoulash reminds me of when I was working in Berlin for 6 months in 1989/90. I used to frequent a Baltic Restaurant that served Ghoulash Suppe which was absolutely delicious. I've not had anything like it since and when I returned to Berlin a few years ago the restaurant was then an Irish pub. Oh well, loks like I'll have to pay Gyr a visit😊.

    I love Hungarian food. I have a very dear friend in Kalocsa who keeps me supplied with various forms of paprika! Goulash is one of my favourites to make and eat. There's never anything left! Chicken Paprikash is also a favourite, but I haven't got the knack of making the noodles so we have to use pasta instead! Anything with paprika is good! I hope you have taken Mrs Greeno a good supply home with you! It does need to be freshly ground or made into a paste, to get all the flavour nuances it can supply, to dance on your tongue!

    • @GreenoEats
      @GreenoEats  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah we have various different types of paprika here, sweet, smoky, spicy etc. The noodles (nokedli) are really hard to make, Mrs Greeno only did it once here before declaring that the time it took to make them wasn't worth it, so if we ever have paprikash we also have pasta with it !

      As an Austrian from Vienna I've been to Hungary countless times and maybe due to our former common empire I have quite an affinity for the country and the food.
      Therefore I know that a lot of Hungarian soups are considered main dishes or full meals on their own.
      One of my favourites, Halászlé, which is a paprika flavoured freshwater fish consommé, for instance also comes in a kettle like this or even larger often hanging from a small rack with a warmer beneath it.
      You actually don't need anything else except some slices of bread and a cold beverage. 🙂

    Righty ho ho Greeno, let me get this clear in my mind 🤔🥴😵‍💫. Your in Gyr, which is in Hungary. So English man looking to eat local food ie Hungarian ❤Goes to English Pub in Hungary 😢😢😢 Old family saying : " And Soylent Green is People" I'll try to catch up with you later. Looks a gorgeous place to hang out, the misty thing. Bit of a worry about Legionnaires thingy. Misty water from air con. A monastery, did it become a bit of habit staying there?? Soups, full of rough chunks of veggies you say.Then.name.two. Potatoes and Carrots & Parsley (?) Tadge watery for my taste. Thought the bread was a let down, should be crunchy rustic. Potato wedges, fair size portion. Pork that soft, braised. Garnish, why?? Price knock out. Entertaining and informative video 👍👌Allan&Family

      I had checked this place out - and while it looks like an English pub, the menu and drinks definitely aren't. You know by now I am not the kind of reviewer who goes looking for the home comforts while on my travels :-) Like the monastery gag ha ha!!In the soup it was potato, carrot and parsnip, with parsley as a garnish. As for the pork - that garnish is a very traditional Hungarian accompaniment... nothing gets wasted, and it's supposed to be a way to make the fat look more attractive. Thanks as always for your comprehensive review of the review - it's always interesting to get such detailed feedback :-)

      @@747jono As a city I am less fond of Frankfurt - find it a little sterile. But around the wider Hesse region there are some great cities and towns to visit. I particularly like Bad Homburg. Koblenz is a lovely city, some amazing coffee shops,cake places and lovely ice cream parlours.
      My gf have done both sides of the area.
      So from Mainz you take the train to Koblenz,the main line for RB and ICE etc to Bonn Köln etc that's one side of the Rhine.
      To be on the other side of the Rhine you take train from Wiesbaden another city lots to see, lots of Americans there, streets named after Presidents etc.
      The American airbase still there, was used extensively for bringing back injured servicemen from Iraq Afghanistan etc.
      On that side of The Rhine its basically the road runs parallel with the river.
      So lots of traditional hotels, no chains at all.
      Great service etc.
      We stayed one year in a lovely place.
      Balcony 2nd floor open windows first thing in morning cup of coffee and a beautiful view over the Rhine fantastic.
      Train station 5 minutes walk, so buy day ticket hop on and off train explore etc.

    I live for roughly 8 years as an expat. But in Budapest its actually somehow hard to find a good Goulash, most of them are unseasoned, simply not flavorful. We do have some epic Asian, Italian, and Fusion things though

    Great vlog, looked a lovely city. Huge portions of food, you seemed to be eating the pork dish for ages and the amount didn’t seem to go down. The goulash looked a bit thin, but as it was a soup that’s probably why, but packed with veggies etc. Silly story, when I was very young we had a yard of ale mounted on brackets on the wall in our dining room, absolutely no idea why ! It was there for a very long time. One day we came home and it had shattered into a million pieces ! Hadn’t fallen off, so it was a complete mystery !

    • @GreenoEats
      @GreenoEats  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Good job nobody was in the dining room when that yard shattered - you'd have had a heart attack ! Goulash (or per the Hungarian spelling Gyulas) is a thin broth soup wit large chunks of meat and veg in it - we're just conditioned over here to expect it to be more of a stew I think, as that's how it started appearing on restaurant menus way back when. Thanks for the kind words about the vlog - always much appreciated !
