    Another great review. We did well as planned vs an inferior opponent. If we can play at the same level vs SC we should win. I like seeing adjustments from one game to the next that pay off. Thx James.

    Another stellar job on this review James. I’m starting to think maybe someone is sending your breakdowns to the coaching staff. All kidding aside, seeing some adjustments as you have suggested being incorporated in the offensive schemes is a positive. Mertz kept at least 3 scores by my count off the board with either slow decisions, bad timing or just flat out missing the receivers downfield. I love the idea of a zero or half-step drop and just get the ball out to your playmakers early, especially when the D is playing off like Vandy was at times. Overall, I was happier with the O, but we’ll have to see how they do against more talented teams. The Gamecocks on the road will be a good test.

    18:22 I’d love to see this look out of the Wildcat with Etienne taking the snap. Give him the option to fake it and bounce it outside with a one on one against a defender. Did you notice in the Kentucky game, we lined up in a Wildcat look with Etienne. It was on a 4th and 1 and we jumped, and had to punt instead. Haven’t seen the Wildcat look before or since.

    One thing I always loved about Billy G’s receivers… he demanded that they be good blockers in order to get playing time.
    I remember some fans were disappointed in the hire. Not me. As a position coach, specifically WR, I think he’s elite. Some knock his recruiting. Maybe.. we’ll see. Maybe CBN makes up for that

    Pleasantly surprised by the consistency and creativity in the passing concepts this game. Routes were not impeding each other, clever use of misdirection in the run game, multiple explosive deep shot opportunities that Mertz just simply missed on. If we can do something similar this week vs SCar, we could put up some points.

    I think a lot of these things that Mertz is doing that sometimes slows the play down will be ironed out with time and experience. He is obviously sticking to his fundamentals and getting comfortable with the system and the team (that we all know is incredibly new and fresh) and once he gets more of a feel for it, his reads will most likely quicken up and he'll trust his instincts. Love what I see out of him though, I'd rather him take the check downs than throw picks any day. I hope he continues to block out the noise and continue to progress in the way he is now.

    I was there, the dump off to Wilson with 5 minutes in the first was due to the fans. they were screaming on the sideline behind Wilson when he was wide open. I could hear it from the Florida side and looked when Mertz did. Shoutout to those fans!

    New stuff is encouraging. What worries me about better teams is Mertz took some shots this game and Max has little to no QPT. Onto Columbia with the chickens where hope springs eternal for a road win. You got me looking at defenses during the game which makes it more interesting. Thanks again for great content.

    I personally love his offense ..the offense compliments the defense , very few turnovers if they execute correctly, ball control. I don't care about the air yards im just looking for them to score points .

    • @TheGatorNationFootballPodcast
      @TheGatorNationFootballPodcast  ปีที่แล้ว

      Scoring points is all that matters. Low air yards simply increases that odds that you won't score points.

  • @afrohawk
    @afrohawk ปีที่แล้ว

    The frustrating part with Mertz is that he looks very poised in the pocket and he has with receivers running wide open, BUT he's just slightly off. He can't seem to figure out the mix of altitude and velocity on his downfield throws. One or the other or both are usually off. I can't see how Max Brown doesn't deserve an opportunity to do better.

    Do you think Mertz is a little gun-shy from the iffy protection and his time at Wisconsin? It seems like he's too afraid of making a mistake.

    Love your content! Stat of the game...28 air yards out of 280 passing yards!

  • @austinmacon3724
    @austinmacon3724 ปีที่แล้ว

    I kinda want to see this offense with all the player we have. I think when you have 3 players with great speed and a couple guys like Jean or by a miracle a guy like Jeremiah Smith and a qb who can hit these throws it could be nice. Also, someone definitely gave him some pass plays. This offense looked good on the lowest of keys. QB couldn’t hit. We left a good 21 points on the board

  • @samuelchoppara136
    @samuelchoppara136 ปีที่แล้ว

    The explosive pass plays were there this game but Mertz doesn’t seem to trust himself on the deep ball. At some point Florida will be forced to use them though.

    I'm encouraged by the growth we saw on the O and hopeful that some further improvement can be made sooner rather than later. It's good to hear about the positives you noted, and although your understanding far exceeds mine, I personally drew some encouragement from this game as it unfolded and after looking at highlights since. Thanks for the breakdown, it helps a lot with understanding modern O concepts and coverages for us regular fans. GG!

    Until we get an elite QB this is the type of play we’re gonna get. I’ve been telling people all year that Mertz is holding this offense back. Not CBN. It’s difficult to call plays when your QB play is below average and the OL is shaky.

    Love your stuff this is another great analysis as usual. If I could ask for anything more it would you be slightly more critical and qbe more opinionated on what should be done. One other thing that would be great is open up with your summary thoughts and be honest and critical of the entire review of that game. i feel like this was billy's best play calling game of the year. i liked a lot of the plays and execution. Tre wilson and boardingham bring a lot to this offense, but it really showed off mertz's ceiling. he consistently missed big time throws, which certainly is indicative of why they have been scared to throw downfield all year.
