  • Plaka is the present capital of Milos, and was founded in 1800. The village spreads on the sides of the hill of the area, uniting the villages of Plakes, Triovassalos, Pera Triovassalos and Tripiti. The village has a traditional Cycladic architecture, with whitewashed houses, coloured windows and doors, balconies full of flowers and greenery and narrow white streets.
From Plaka one can enjoy a magnificent view of the Gulf of Milos. Plaka began to develop after the destruction of Ancient Hora, when the increasing number of refugees could not fit within the walls of Kastro. The new village was built from material brought by the new settlers from their ancient houses and the ruined city. It was named Plaka because the land on which it was built was really flat (plaka means flat stone). In this lovely village, visitors can see some nice old churches as well as a folk and an archaeological museum.
It is perched on the top of large rock, overlooking the gulf of Milos.
No cars can enter the village because of the narrow spaces between walls and buildings.
Motorbikes, mopeds and the like are the only usable vehicles.
Unlike its neighbor islands, the main village (capital) of Milos is not called Milos but Plaka (or Plaka Milou). It is a beautiful old settlement built on the slopes of a high volcanic rock. The castle of Plaka, Kastro, is at the highest point of the village, overlooking the entire island and the uninhabited island of Antimilos.
The first houses were built on the hill of Kastro, for best protection and later the other houses appeared, when there was no more space around the castle. Plaka center is closed for cars because the small streets are too narrow and only motorbikes can pass. There is a large municipal parking at the village entrance where you can leave your car.
Plaka center has plenty of labyrinth-like streets with small souvenir shops and on many place you can see mosaics of small colored stones. In the center there are a few taverns which set their tables directly on the small square. The church near the square has a large platform with view of Milos gulf. There are also a couple of museums - an archeological museum, a folklore museum and an unique sand museum.
