Stack has something of a cult following so it's really no surprise. The only other contender is Shinra-Bansho but they do a LOT of streams in Japanese only so they can be a bit more difficult in terms of accessibility.
I still believe whatever the hell happened to Renko became the catalyst for Maribel to become Yukari, and this song definitely plays on that trope! It's so fucking good!
What if Renko became the black, eye-filled void that Yukari travels through? Yukari being the outside, and Renko being the inside. The reverse side of existence, so to say.
I feel like the story in this video is: Maribel and Renko traveled to Gensokyo using Maribel boundary control power even though it wasn’t perfect. After entering Gensokyo through a black mirror, they decided to use a red string to connect each other so they won’t get lost. But then they were chased by something and was forced to leave. After Maribel was able to leave after going through the mirror again, the portal suddenly closed, making it so Renko couldn’t leave, getting killed (maybe). On the other side, Maribel saw what happened to Renko. She was angry at herself and decided to perfect her boundary manipulation so nothing like this would never happen again
I'm fairly certain that the red string was more so meant to represent the red string of Fate (ie; fated lovers) and that being separated/snapped meant they could no longer be together, likely due to the other circumstances you had described. Horribly sad either way.
Indeed you are right, as you can see from other Akatsuki Records songs contaning Renko and Maribel, it's clear they ships them hard lol. But, i'd like to think an accident happens when Renko and Maribel visits an antique shop, rumored to house a magical artifact, where they found this black mirror. Renko, curious, touched the mirror and got sucked in, while Merry tried to hold her hand to no avail. She was forced to let go as Renko disappears to the black abyss. Merry was left there, devastated of what just happened. She tried everything, and even begged the mirror to give Renko back, but was met with nothingness. However, Renko is still alive, but at the time she showed herself to Merry again from behind the mirror, Merry realized that the Renko she knew was gone, replaced by something else entirely (Hence Renko's body glitching in and out of existence, her walking away from the mirror instead of approaching it, possibly embracing the darkness, the red thread snapping, severing any ties between Renko and Maribel, and the hundreds of hands that surrounds herself with the mirror). Maribel was left mortified, and breaks the mirror, with Renko still inside, with her hands. She decided to became Yukari in order to prevent all this from happening again.

I second this statement And it isn't really the sound quality that's better here, but the mixing Stack Bros. really did a good job of improving the sound while keeping that washed out dreamlike feeling At first it felt weird listening to this version as I was so used to the original (this has become my second most listened track only topped by the final boss theme of the dark souls series) But when you listen to it with headphones it really becomes something else

This song is so amazing! That ending bit is particularly brutal. Poor Renko :( Seriously love you guys. Been listening your music for like a decade and you always have delivered absolute bangers. man, I love this song so much. The theme of the song, the music video, stack's voice, it's all perfect. I personally prefer this epic and tense songs to other songs by stack that are more cutesy and what not. Stack's voice is golden nevertheless the themes of the songs
EYYYY they made a remaster and a PV and an album around it This track really deserved that And oh boi that means more renmerry tracks from Akatsuki, happy for that Also everyone is already praising Stack, Stack Bros. deserves some respect too for those arranges Edit: Alright I listened to this enough now and lemme just fanboy a little more over here At first this version felt a little weird due to how used I was to the original But after some more listening this version really starts hitting The piano at the beginning has been cleaned up from those loud background hits, making the downwoard trajectory of them actually feel stronger instead of being overtoned by how sudden they are And it also gives this a more mysterious and stronger buildup Stacks voice at the start is just absolutely glorious For the rest the mixing in general has put more focus on the instruments At first that felt like it made the voice stand out not enough and made the washed outness of the original go away But after some more listening the mixing sound even more washed out due to how the two tracks used for the voice here sounding so simmilar until they split up (in the original you could distinquish them more easily, and I am still unsure if the first part even has the full lines as double) But it feels far more planned out due to the instruments not just doing their thing in the background but also going over into the foreground The double voice effect I talked about also seems more like it has been turned into something that starts becoming more and more obvious Barely appearing (if at all) in the first part Then in the second becoming a little noticeable While the third then of course does the two entirely different vocals The mixing of that last part is also glorious I do miss the slow part overtowering the fast one But the fast part being so easily noticeable has a far stronger impact And of course that crack now actually sounds like it cracks away the song The only thing I could kinda dislike about this version is how the calmer sections feel like they have a different loudness, for the most part now being louder But I think I'll get used to that too
No way We are blessed with extra-high quality content **tears of happiness** Damn, this sound work. Verses sound kinda in the same intimate way as the acoustic versions do. (Stack's English is still adorably Japanese, huh. Doesn't affect on the whole song quality though, charming in a way)

Renko, curious, touched the mirror and got sucked in, while Merry tried to hold her hand to no avail. She was forced to let go as Renko disappears to the black abyss. Merry was left there, devastated of what just happened. She tried everything, and even begged the mirror to give Renko back, but was met with nothingness. However, Renko is still alive, but at the time she showed herself to Merry again from behind the mirror, Merry realized that the Renko she knew was gone, replaced by something else entirely (Hence Renko's body glitching in and out of existence, her walking away from the mirror instead of approaching it, possibly embracing the darkness, the red thread snapping, severing any ties between Renko and Maribel, and the hundreds of hands that surrounds herself with the mirror). Maribel was left mortified, and breaks the mirror, with Renko still inside, with her hands. She decided to became Yukari in order to prevent all this from happening again.

At first it felt weird listening to this version as I was so used to the original (this has become my second most listened track only topped by the final boss theme of the dark souls series)

Alright I listened to this enough now and lemme just fanboy a little more over here
At first this version felt a little weird due to how used I was to the original
But after some more listening this version really starts hitting
The piano at the beginning has been cleaned up from those loud background hits, making the downwoard trajectory of them actually feel stronger instead of being overtoned by how sudden they are
And it also gives this a more mysterious and stronger buildup
Stacks voice at the start is just absolutely glorious
For the rest the mixing in general has put more focus on the instruments
At first that felt like it made the voice stand out not enough and made the washed outness of the original go away
But after some more listening the mixing sound even more washed out due to how the two tracks used for the voice here sounding so simmilar until they split up (in the original you could distinquish them more easily, and I am still unsure if the first part even has the full lines as double)
But it feels far more planned out due to the instruments not just doing their thing in the background but also going over into the foreground
The double voice effect I talked about also seems more like it has been turned into something that starts becoming more and more obvious
Barely appearing (if at all) in the first part
Then in the second becoming a little noticeable
While the third then of course does the two entirely different vocals
The mixing of that last part is also glorious
I do miss the slow part overtowering the fast one
But the fast part being so easily noticeable has a far stronger impact
And of course that crack now actually sounds like it cracks away the song
The only thing I could kinda dislike about this version is how the calmer sections feel like they have a different loudness, for the most part now being louder
But I think I'll get used to that too
