I grew up in the Santa Ana river only it was between Riverside and Norco....no fish. Love this my friend. Thank you for your kind words and your awesome vlogs. Hope to fish along side you someday.
Haven't fished around Seven Oaks since 1989, but used to nail them on Velveeta and a small treble. My dad had a place up there, and we started fishing the south fork when the state limit was 10 per day. Taught my older son to fish there and then "graduated" to the Eastern Sierra. Lots of fond memories.
I was planning on fishing there tomorrow. Lots of accessible little pools with small wild trout. If I can’t catch my limit for stocked trout, I’ll use a half inch of pink worm or trout magnet to catch the wild trout. Fun to catch and release.
Great video. I've been wanting to go check it out. I fish the eastern Sierra and didn't even know about this place until my cousin told me about it. I fly fish 🐟 looks like a fun little creek/river.
Local guy told me that fish and game is stocking some browns to help revitalize that population. I had great success catching stockers there a couple weeks ago and plan on going Tuesday.
I've fished that river from the jetty in Newport beach to where you are at and damn that's low. Shows how long it's been since I've been there. Love that whole area.
I’ve fished there since the mid 90’s, back then catching 2 lb trout was pretty common and 3 lbr’s were common enough that it made for a fun trip. It sucks to see the shape it’s in now although since I’m in town I’m going to hit it on Monday, I may make a video on it if I do any good. Thanks for the video!
Definitely has seen a decline over the years... There are still sections that can support fish size in the 2lb range, this area isn't one of them. Good luck on your outing!
The key is to use small crappie jigs in 132nd or 1/16 Oz. You can also go out there and just fly line a baby nightcrawler or piece of a mealworm. You really just need to downsize and cast way upstream of the spot you think the fish are holding that way the bait as time to settle into the bite zone before it gets to the fish.
so you don't have to use barbless. I've wonder that for a while .fish and game couldn't tell me every time I asked lol. are night crawlers legal /live bait ?
This is not a barbless artificial stretch of water. Nowhere on the Santa Ana is it required. There are nearby tributaries of the Santa Ana that it is required. Depending on what pools I'm fishing I may or may not use barbless hooks.
I love this area but I haven't been up since the fire. As I recall, live bait okay but these fish tend to swallow baits (insects, eggs, cheese). There aren't many fish except for the first few days after they get stocked. I recommend barbless if catch-and-release, better for the fish. Personally, I generally don't keep them, too small and just-stocked fish aren't good eating… even my cat refuses them sometimes.
Hello ... Patreon is another side to my TH-cam channel that gives viewers the opportunity to ask me in depth questions directly...receive weekly reports from the places I'm currently fishing. I also help anglers plan trips... Answer gear questions... And of course we have our giveaways which we do every month. Basically it's all the stuff I can't offer the almost 14,000 people here on TH-cam.
Nice! Were you throwing a trout magnet? I'm deliberating where to go as I scheduled a few days off work second week of August. Based on your report, it sounds bleak in this area :( Any general recommendations on other places to check out? Wanting to take my wife and kids camping (or glamping lol) and would love to take the kids fishing somewhere....
Do you mind sharing the road you took in to this spot? Been wanting to take friends, but the only road I can find is the 38 and it's like 2 miles from there
Yeah that sign is not a legal sign, this isn't a catch and release regulated stream. DFW has removed that illegal sign many times over the years. The sign should be ignored.
Don't forget to head over to PATREON to get those weekly reports and a chance to win a monthly giveaway!!

Velveeta still gets em'!

Your bringing back a lot of memories. Have fished most of the places you are fishing.
Great video bud. We had some great days on that river.
Looking forward to this coming fall/winter.
Awesome, thank you Urban Outdoorsman for your informative videos!!!

Yeah the water is really low and it's not even midsummer. Going to be real scary by October

I was up there 2 weeks ago and did good myself. Got 2, lost 2.
Nice job working those pools:)
Thanks John!
Like the lower end by the water errigation. Native three pounders. and if your lucky. Maybe a brown. Best place on the Santa Ana river.
Sad to see the river like that. Use to wreck them there as a kid. Times have changed 🙁
Is the people man , people don’t take care of the fish
Love the sign of catch and release where’s this spot my
Boy !
Any advice on rigging for such shallow riverbeds like this? I’ve always wanted to try going out to these areas, but I’m afraid of snagging easily.

Why would you bait fish for these trout? Catch and release only.
I hope it filled up with all this rain we got, do the planted trout reproduce?
Most do not have the ability.... But a few manage to produce despite the chemical treatment to make them infertile
What's patrion. I would like to get more information on where to go fish

These were Berkley jiggs. Big Bear is your best bet for fishing/camping nearby. You have green valley lake down the way ($25) per fisherman. Good luck
Have you ever tried to fish the Santa Ana in Riverside before?
A long time ago I did some carp fishing in a few spots and it was pretty fun but I had to take three showers before I felt normal again
Can you update the water conditions now after the winder storm at this same place
Running good and clear
@@TroutWest what’s a good place to start at up stream head down to the end of seven oaks rd?
I've been wanting to do something like this. In big bear..
Well you're in luck. This area is not far from Big Bear
I was expecting it to be a video about the expensive cesspool or at best, mossy, smelly mudhole and privately owned pond in Orange County.
The pool you were fishing were they upstream or down stream
Upstream or downstream of what
Do they stock the creeks or no?
They do!
Do you mind sharing the road you took in to this spot? Been wanting to take friends, but the only road I can find is the 38 and it's like 2 miles from there
Yep this is off the 38! Highly recommend you sign up to my patreon. We're about to do a huge video on all the creeks.
Were you using salmon eggs
Crappie jigs
Yea we has to evacuate that fire was a beast
Is this near South Fork?
What road you take to get to the river?
Hwy 38 from the mentone area.
@@TroutWest great; thanks man.cant wait to check it out.
Ever look into canyon creek/holy jim its gets stocked …
There water still?
Yeah. Good monsoon helped a lot.
@@TroutWest any good swimming holes near there?
What are the coordinates please??
I don't know the coordinates but it's listed on the fish and game website under trout plants
Would you drink that water ? I live and fish up north, drink out of every creek I fish in.
I would. It's pretty clean
@@TroutWestjust not down river near the homeless encampments
how much is it to get in?
To where? The Santa Ana River? Free.
Is it not legal to catch and release wild trout?
You can catch and release any fish in California unless you're fishing a private water that says otherwise.
You should get into fly fishing
I do. But SoCal isn't good fly fishing. When I'm out of state I do quite a bit. But most people relate to spin. That's why you see it.
Welp you got your rain.
WAS
This whole area is probably all burnt down
Negative. Fire didn't affect this area
@@TroutWest isn’t this area off the 38
Correct
Why ignore catch & release? So fishing sucks from here on out???
Not sure what you mean.... Who's ignoring it?
@@TroutWest At 2:17 in front of the Catch & Release sign you wrote in on the video screen, - "Illegal Signs Like This Should Be Ignored"!
