I’m a Dallasite, so the Mav’s are my team, but I’m also happy that another Texas team looks to be in the spotlight for years to come because of their superstar Wemby.
This is one of the first videos I have seen that I think gets it exactly right. Personally, as a Spurs fan, I hold the unpopular opinion of wanting them back in the draft lottery one more time. I actually don’t want them to win all that much more this year so they can win a lot more later. But I do think people are sleeping on this team a little more than they should.
Careful now... I am absolutely intrigued by Wemby and hoping that we might see a completely new breed of player, a true unicorn. I am also delighted that he got through his first NBA season in one piece (not an easy task for any rookie). But we know already that he did not have the same impact as a franchise player like Tim Duncan, Michael Jordan or Larry Bird. These player immediately elevated their teams into play-off or even champtionship contenders. Wemby is much younger than those three and they were not on a minute restriction like him. Maybe the poor result in the regular season was entirely engineered by the Spurs to get additional draft picks. But to this point we have not seen that Wemby is the type of franchise player who shapes the entire franchise culture and attitude almost immediately.
Tim Duncan didn't elevate his team alone : he had the Admiral and it's huge, because the opponents never focused on him like they did last year on Wemby. Last year reacord is meaningless as Popp tanked and not played for W. The team could have lost much less games but even with 15-20 wins more, Spurs wouldn't have been more than a 1st round playoff team. What for ?
