Spotted Hyena Video From The Satara Region (Crocuta crocuta) - Whoop & Laugh Sound
The Spotted Hyena (Spotted Hyaena) is one of my favourite animals, and is the most common predator, by numbers and generally sightings, in the Kruger National Park.
The Spotted Hyena is regarding as an apex predator, although they are mainly scavengers in the Kruger National Park - despite the fact that they are excellent hunters, with excellent stamina, they literally run their prey to exhaustion. They are a member of the "Ugly Five", but I think they are interesting and good looking mammals, although sometimes they don't smell very good.
This video was filmed mostly around the Satara area, but also close to Orpen. The H7 tar road had most of these sightings. There are large clans and multiple clans (By the looks of it) in this area. I am sure this is due to the large Lion population in this region. Interestingly enough, the Spotted Hyena scavenges over 90% of it's food in the Kruger National Park, compared to places like the Masai Mara National Reserve, where they only scavenge around 65% of their food and hunt for the rest. This is due to a number of factors, such as the migrations in Kenya/Tanzania and the higher Lion population in the Kruger National park.
In the background of this video you can hear the characteristic and beautiful animal calls of the Spotted Hyena, which includes the whoop, laughing and other sounds the Spotted Hyena makes. After that we have added some bird calls that can be heard during the Kruger National Park nights, when the Spotted Hyaena is most active!
