Back in the day I was into photography in a big way for about 7 years starting in 1975. Photo editing back then was called a Darkroom 🤣 Kinda been thinking about Video Editing fo too long, I know I will have a very steep learning curve or worse.
Back in '98 I had Micrografx Picture Publisher. They got picked up by Corel and integrated into Paintshop. Kinda stuck with that up till today. Tried GIMP every so often but I'm not really picking up on the workflow. Call me habituated.
Although it has a learning curve, the most comprehensive free editor I have ever found is Darktable. There are two updates a year and it is completely free.
i just tried it for the first time, hands down the best photography editing software i have ever used, and honestly very ui friendly, thanks so much for the reccomendation!
Although it's not really marketed as a photo editor, if you have a powerful enough computer, the video editing software DaVinci Resolve can also be used to edit images, applying a whole selection of effects, colour correction, and more. It comes in a free version and a paid Studio version, though you will likely only need to free version.
@user-ok7xk7sw8w no, the free version is without watermark, unless you attempt to use one of the effects that are in the paid version. They let you try them out to see how it works, but there's a mark indicating it's for the paid Studio version.
That is an excellent program, it does have some unique features. I use several programs besides Photofiltre, especially MediaImpression, Irfanview, and PhotoScape. I tried Gimp once but couldn't figure it out at all!
Krita is definitely great free software, but it's definitely more geared towards digital art. The most photo editing I do with it is making thumbnails for my TH-cam videos.
Great choice. I use the GIMP as I support open source (and I'm cheap...). I have tried it occasionally over the years but it's complexity always stopped me. Now that I am putting a little effort into it, I can really appreciate it's power. I will be checking out your tutorials.
Version 1 is a great freeware program. I have not gone with V2 as it is a payfor program now and I just like PSX and for a pay program I use a version with only the initial cost of Luminar NEO. Unfortunately, Skylum has now gone to a subscription policy.
What would you suggest for someone who likes attaching his face to video game characters on his thumbnails for videos? I used DaVinci and GIMP before and am an absolute novice with both.
I disagree. I use Gimp already for years and it is the least intuitive slowest starting software I have ever used. Even after using it for years, I still get extremely irritated when I need to do something new. Every little thing has an enormous learning curve and never is logical. I just don't understand how stupid they could make the user interface. I would never ever recommend Gimp to anyone even though I use it.
@@danielmelcher5310 You have a point there. The problem is that currently Gimp is the software I know best and for any other program I have to start from scratch. When I started with Gimp I thought it was just me needing to get used to new software. And although I slowly learned new functions, it became more clear that every freaking new function took a lot of searching and after a year of struggling I now dare to conclude that it is just a really crappy non intuitive user interface. So I take every opportunity to tell people to not fall for my mistake and just chose software that works easier from the start. Because of limited lime I use Gimp but tell myself that next vacation I have to start learning another program to finally toss this Gimp Garbage.
Not sure if you have heard of PhotoGIMP, which is a free patch that customises the GIMP user interface to emulate Photoshop’s, while also changing GIMP’s default shortcuts to match those of Photoshop. For my laptop that I use at work (provided by the company with low specs), I use Photopea instead of Photoshop that is pre-installed in the laptop because it takes so long to load the programme and is so laggy. Photopea is a pretty good alternative especially when you install ad blockers on your browser and ads can't appear on the Photopea website. For my personal laptop I install PhotoGIMP and the layout is the same as Photoshop.
Hi out of all these mentioned which ones has the most fonts available? All I do is take pictures of products, resize them to fit instagram aspect ratio and put a cool fonts like Venera on the picture. Thank you.
Nobody is mentioning krita? I found it more intuitive than gimp and more powerful than most the rest. I used it for an hour before I was accomplishing the things I'd been struggling with all evening with these other softwares.
Love it. The UI is so outdated and it barely gets updated, but it is easily the best application of its kind and the Gap is so large. I can't even use anything else. They've got a couple other apps that are completely useless too. It's the weirdest thing. Why can no one make a good Windows gallery app.. . other than them.... 15 years ago? It blows my mind that that's the best one, but it definitely is the best one
Easy keyboard shortcuts for cropping rotating and make other small adjustments on the fly. Batch renaming and image editing. You can link all of your different external applications to it. Also using simple shortcut keys. Intuitively flip through the photos and zoom in and out like nobody's business. It really is the best of the best dressed up like Windows 95
I’ve used Photoshop CS4 , and have refused to start paying monthly charge to move up. But with newer operating systems from apple, it is becoming obsolete. I plan to try learning Gimp because of your video choices. Thank you👍🤞🏻🙏🏻
photo shop express by adobe seems to not be free it offers a free trial though. Thank you for making this video my communications professor is requiring I make a digital collage and just for this assignment need to find a free photo editor. Super appreciate this.
BTW a googly search for Free Image Editors will find anything you need and then likely some will indicate their rating of those available. This was a good video however.
Are you aware of a vector creator? I've been searching for a quicker way to turn and image into a vectorized graphic similar to an SVG. The image could be used for stickers or other POD applications.
PhotoScape X (I call it PSX) offers collage capability also. However, because one can simply use any background and then insert images onto that background layer that is another option available in PSX.
PhotoScape X I think does all three but not sure about .pdf. Any changing to a .pdf I do is with Libre Office which is free. I have created a tutorial user manual for PSX with text and images showing how to use the program. Just did not find folks interested in the info but that is ok too.
I like to use PhotoSketcher which is also a freeware program. Sometimes I will do much of the editing in PhotoScape X and then begin a play with Sketcher to develop the final image but then go back into PSX and add signature and frame.

I found this girl on a video talking about apps pretty much saying they were free and what not I downloaded it let just say they weren't free but I'm going to try your apps they seem to be free not all of us got unlimited money lol
I bought the paid version of Photoscape X Pro to unlock the lens database. Only 3 Canon RF lenses listed, none of which I own. Have written to to the support address twice so far asking if more RF lens profiles were available or were being planned. I have heard nothing back. The last update was Jan 2022 (running on two years ago now). They took my money fine but seems to be an abandoned piece of software as far as the paid Pro version goes. I've switched to Gimp and will be trying the 30 day trial of DXO PureRaw 3 as a RAW editor.
Thanks for your videos. I'm just getting back into photography & found this helpful. Do all of these include to ability to group add a copyright into the Metadata? Thank you from a subscriber.
check your camera as it may allow that feature. However, at least in Canada, the photographer automatically has copyright to any image he takes. Personally, I don't watermark but do sight all my images which is easy to do when using PhotoScape X (free or Pro)
Great information, I’m looking for software that also organizes photos and removes duplicates across multiple sources including internal and external drives and Amazon photos. Any suggestions ? Or do I need two different software packages? I’m also transitioning from windows platforms to apple ipads.
Hello! I would like a software that allows me to: If I start with a World Map. I want to be able to select only the outlines that make up the continents (not draw them manually) and then cut it out and insert into a new sheet for further editing. Samsungs camera app has a feature that allows you to select people in photographs, cut them out and paste wherever you want. This is my minimal requirement. Maybe this kind of feature is standard in all editing softwares? Kind regards, Astrocyte
For quick edits when I don't want to use PS, I find Faststone Image Viewer useful. It's a good viewer with lots of sorting options and customisations, and has a fair amount of tools including good cropping and resizing. Handles almost any format. Free.
I have used FSIV for many years but have never edited on it so not sure of the capabilities in that regard. I just like to use it as a viewer even better than the PSX viewer.
