  • RIP Douglas Trumbull, creator of the Showscan process and one of the most influential VFX artists of all time.
This is the Showscan film "Space Race" (HDP-2177) produced in collaboration with George Lucas's Industrial, Light & Magic team and stored on a Sony high-definition 12" HDVS videodisc produced in very limited numbers.
It's the future and you're on the outskirts of Earth headed to NASA's space station. Your pilot accidently gets too close to a black hole generator which warps you into the middle of a high-speed life-or-death race against alien starships! What will you and your pilot do? Watch to find out! Produced almost completely with practical effects, this is one of Showscan's collaborations with Industrial Light & Magic....and the Star Wars influences show!
Showscan Film Corporation was a company and a film process. The Showscan process modified camera & film projectors and ran them at 60fps instead of the usual 24fps, making viewers feel more engaged with the viewing experience. While the earliest films made by Showscan were purely meant for viewing, later "attractions" were small rides with powered seats and chairs which would move the viewer in coordination with the events on screen. Needless to say, the 60fps process made the high-definition HDVS disc format a prime candidate for the easy transportation and set-up of Showscan attractions. No longer would a huge, very expensive, modified 70mm camera with large reels need to be moved from location to location.
While Showscan won many awards for many of their releases, they were mostly known for their first hit, "Street Luge," and their later collaborations with George Lucas's Industrial Light & Magic (like this one).
Enjoy this classic award winning video! #douglastrumbull
Fun fact: This short was directed by ‪@ScottSquires‬ who has a fantastic TH-cam channel full of behind-the-scenes VFX videos & tutorials.

This was played back on a Sony HDL-2000 Videodisc player which outputs analog component (1035i) video. Uploaded in upscaled 4K ProRes for extra clarity!
The audio track is a mono cue track which has been duplicated across both channels. The right audio track on the disc contains a data signal... I'm assuming it's to control the original pneumatic chairs.
For more information about the 12" LaserDisc-like high-definition "HDVS" disc format that this footage was stored on, please see one of my other HDVS uploads from my HDVS playlist here: • World's Oldest High-De...

The film was shown in Japan at Space World, a space-themed amusement park.
The screening has already ended and Space World is shutdown.
It's amazing to see this film again!

My god! The nostalgia. I used to work for the attractions for a casino in Vegas from 16 - 23. This was one of our motion theater rides that we would alternate. Haven't seen this in over 20 years, thank you!

This is not only impressive for the fact it's an analog video in HD but also the fact that its a capture of a 70mm film running at 60fps. WOW.

70mm has the equivalent resolution of 12k video, so really we don't even have yet the modern mainstream digital technology to watch this in it's true potential.

I dare to say that few people have the proper eyesight for 12k material 🤣

I DID THIS RIDE AT THE CN TOWER IN TORONTO!!!! It blew my mind because of the smooth frame rate. I figured nobody would ever get the 60fps original, but holy freaking crap, here it is. How did you find a copy!?!?

I rode the same ride. Only difference is in the ride, there was an image of the CN Tower coming back to the landing pad.

I've always wondered what a film recording would look like in 50-60 frames/sec instead of 24, now I know and am very impressed!!! It looks as fluid as live television! And the effects are truly amazing, I wonder how much of it was CGI and how much of it was model effects?

Suddenly I’m missing the old original Star Tours. This looks, moves, and sounds just like it right down to the pilot narrating it and telling everyone to safely exit.

very impressive! considering this is mostly practical effects. its fascinating the way they manage to create this kind of stuff without a 3D software.

Oh, you hurt this old filmmaker and VFX guy. ;) You make it sound like 1991 was the stone age and we were living in caves, lol.

I remember seeing that on a real dynamic ride, it was pretty impressive and run as smooth as the Showscan projections system could, what a ride, i didn't knew that an analog muse HDTV version was print.

This wasn't a retail release. This disc was a small run/custom pressing. Sony offered a small batch HDVS disc pressing service with a minimum order quantity of 10 discs for approx. $16,000 USD ($1,600 each). No idea how many of these were made.
Also, no MUSE compression on these discs! This disc contains pure, uncompressed component analog HD!
Always cool to hear that someone experienced this in it's original form! Thanks for sharing!

nice work from Mr Trumbull, may his memory exist forever in the hearts of the great alumni within the theme-park industry!
(do you think you can get your hands on "In search of the obelisk" also by Douglas Trumbull one day?"

Very pleased that someone has uploaded a high quality copy of this simulation, I remember riding this at Duxford as a kid. Is there anywhere I can download the original copy?

Where the hell did you get that.
This probably goes with an attraction, you know the one where you seat in front of a big screen.

    • @CorporalDanLives
      @CorporalDanLives 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

There was a huge installation for this ride, Star Tours style with the hydraulic platform, maybe 14 people inside total? I guess the original master version was 70 mm film, but according to documentation it looks like it was playing off a special HD video disc format I've never heard of. This channel is insane.

Oh and apparently this was also used in smaller motion simulators too, like 2-rider units in shopping malls (I've never seen them though).

Anyone know the name of the one that was exactly like this graphically except there was a backwards sequence like in Devil's Mine Ride? I think it took place primarily on the banked track portion and was more fluid.
