    Before I even begin... They need to bring themselves back by killing a main character *who stays dead*

    I want a story where the Doctor discovers a dead civilization, purged by the Daleks. Like the classic story, the final one with Susan, but more brutal. No one survived. The Daleks caused the extinction of a species. Remember when the tenth Doctor saw all the human Daleks die, and said "Genocide!" The disgust and anger in his voice. I want a story where 13 gets a look of fear on her face, and realizes what the Daleks have done. She wonders how many more planets were rendered lifeless by them. You wouldn't even have to have a Dalek appear. A flashback of one exterminating would be enough to drive the point home that these things are dangerous. As for the main plot, how about a horror story similar to Listen? I like those stories.

      I like the idea of seeing the daleks actually do this. Maybe seeing a teenager kick over a dalek and shoot off a one-liner, while a load of people rush in to smash it to pieces before looking up at the sky and seeing thousands of daleks just blotting out the sun, their single-minded battlecry forming from a thousand chants into one: "Exterminate!" Then forward again to the doctor examining some charred remains and telling their companions: "twenty minutes. All it took to snuff out an entire world.." maybe while the clueless companion says something like "how does a DALEK destroy an entire world?" and the doctor shakes their head and just says. "Daleks. Plural."

    In hindsight, I think the offscreen "presence" of the Daleks in Bad Wolf is fantastic. They feel ominous and manipulative, which reminds me of some of the portrayals of the Time Lords in the classic series. I think this was one of the few times when the Daleks felt truly powerful.

      Terry Nation recalled seeing a Soviet Ballet production where the ballerinas were in long dresses that went to the floor and they seemed to float. Plus he wanted to avoid the man in the rubber suit look.

    Agree with you about the Doctor being scared of them. When he's scared the audience is. Look at Scherzo, an audio where the Doctor is so scared he gives up in the first five minutes. That was terrifying.

  • @johncrwarner

    The trick with the original serials was the reveal at the end of an episode - the later the better of the Daleks as the baddies - and definitely lots more interesting shots from low down looking up etc.

    Honestly, make the Daleks scary is a collaborative effort. When I recently rewatched The Stolen Earth/Journey's End, I legitimately felt a sense of dread and fear, despite knowing how the story turns out. Here's what you do: First off, the music, Murray Gold was great at using music to make the Daleks terrifying, with the choir and the melody, secondly, the protagonists reaction. In the Stolen Earth, even the immortal time agent Jack Harkness just gives up when he hears "Exterminate." He legitimately hugs the Torchwood cast and says "I'm sorry, we're dead!"
    I think, as humans, we expect an intelligent creature to have, emotions, feelings, a way to negotiate, I think we have a deep fear of something that can't be reasoned or negotiated with, especially when it's as violent and evil as a Dalek. They shouldn't be an easily defeated monster of the week, they should be difficult, unrelenting. Some of the best Dalek stories are ones where they win, they do so in Genesis and even in ones where they lose, they still leave devastation in their wake.

  • @TheSmart-CasualGamer
    @TheSmart-CasualGamer 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    They just kill everything. Look at their first episode, Genesis, Remembrance, Dalek and Stolen Earth/Journey's End. These episodes are basically just "Daleks kill people" for at least a few scenes. Them blowing up the house in The Stolen Earth is a brilliant scene.

      The Daleks are accustomed to blowing up buildings if they can't get in it, or before they could fly, if they were defeated by stairs.

    The Daleks killing Lynda is one of the saddest but best shot moments in modern DW. As a kid I really liked Lynda and hoped she would become a companion, and I remember as soon as I saw her slowly turn around I immediately looked away because I knew what was about to happen.
    I do get the feeling that Moffat didn't want to make the Daleks front & centre every series like RTD basically did but at the same time was obliged to use them in some capacity, and I felt like that hurt them a bit. I don't think the revived show has had any truly bad Dalek stories except for Evolution, and I can't truly dislike an episode when it's got the Daleks in it because they're my favourite monsters, but too many of the more recent ones have not made them feel scary enough. A break from them, followed by a big reveal a couple of years down the line that makes 13 react like 9 did in Bad Wolf, would be perfect.

    • @Ben-vf5gk
      @Ben-vf5gk 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To be fair even in evolution I'd argue that the Daleks are stills scary and feel threatening e.g. the scene where they kill Solomon

    Best scene ever in a Dalek story is in The Stolen Earth. When Mr. Smith plays the message from space and Sarah Jane hears the Daleks for the first time since she travelled with the Doctor, the look on her face is perfect. The look of horror, not only on her face, but her eyes gave me goosebumps! Brilliant!

    In my opinion the Daleks were scary, becuse they were acting like nazis like they turned aganist their creator in 'Genesis of The Daleks', and killed every one without any reason. In 'Dalek' a single Dalek killed over 200 people. In my opinion, this made them scary. Sadly Moffat couldn't write them well.

    The Daleks are the most iconic villain in the whole of sci-fi. The Daleks kill because that’s what they feel is the right thing to do. The episode dalek represents how much of a threat the Daleks are. Now the Doctor isn’t really scared of them anymore. They haven’t killed anyone since Victory of the Daleks!!!

  • @jamiestevens3074
    @jamiestevens3074 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    My favourite scene of the doctor and the daleks is probably on “planet of the daleks” when the doctor and the crew find an invisible creature and they reveal its a dalek and they way pertwees face goes into fear and anger as he groans “daleks” and then the episode cuts off. I know it’s not the best scene but it was my first story I saw of pertwee and I know it’s not a great story but I love it.

  • @jamiestevens3074
    @jamiestevens3074 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Although I haven’t been scared of the daleks since I was 4 years old when I watched series 1, I think what makes them scary is the fact they’re so careless, you cannot negotiate with them AT ALL. I also think the fact that they slowly move towards you while screeching “exterminate” as they don’t listen to your mercy, that makes them creepy. But sadly, they have been made for light comedy, and the doctor and companions haven’t been like “we HAVE TO run now, this is not safe...RUN!” But instead it’s been “yep, that’s a dalek, I’ll explain later, quickly follow me”
    Love your videos wingy! Almost at 5k subs, congrats!

    I think a good moment that portrays the terror of dealing with the Daleks is in the stolen earth when Jack admits there's nothing he can do. Its definitely quite eerie when the immortal says "we're dead". Especially after seeing Torchwood with that context, he's dealt with threats of all kinds and at the mere mention of Daleks, he's admitting defeat before the fight has even begun.

    I think my fav dalek fear moment is in stolen earth when all of his previous companions hear that one word and just fall apart
    Sarah jane breaks down crying for her son
    Jack just admits there's nothing he can do and holds his people close
    Martha dosnt know what to do
    And even rose who came back to help fight them still trembles a little bit
    i think it's it's perfect moment that shows the impact of the dalek threat

  • @10thdoctor15
    @10thdoctor15 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    The Parting of the Ways is the best the Daleks have ever been. The way they kill everyone on floor 0 is them representing death, also when they're first heard in The Stolen Earth, and Jack just says they're dead (and he can't die).

  • @Ben-vf5gk
    @Ben-vf5gk 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Why don't they just have a Dalek Prison Camps story? It would bring back the nazi vibe that made them scary in the 60s, there's existing material to pull from (Prisoner of the Daleks) and they've even mentioned them in the show (Asylum, Death in Heaven). A really grueling, brutal story where the workers are exterminated for the smallest of failures. If it isn't done at some point in the next two series I'm going to Cardiff with a megaphone!

    I don't find them scary. More amusing. I like the daleks, they're fun, but they don't scare me. Partly because they just strike me as goofy. Partly because they cycle between coming back then getting wiped out. Dalek was their best episode in modern who for me. Then in parting of the ways they get wiped out easily by Bad Wolf Rose. The in the series 2 finale, sucked into the void. Then Dr Donna easily turns the tables on them...

    The hero needs to show fear.
    The most memorable scene for me from The Stolen Earth was when Sarah Jane was reduced to tears when she heard the Dalek voices.
    That scene was perfection is a kinda-OK Dalek episode: th-cam.com/video/xH1Iwq8sbu0/w-d-xo.html

    I never thought of them as scary or eerie, until I think hard about them. Especially after watching the original series stories with them, and Big Finish Audio, etc. Purely on a psychological level, and how apathetic they are or how they seem devoid of conventional feeling or understanding of regular beings. Designwise, they seem more badass. But, I also know they have this uncanny valley effect in the og series based on how silent they were when moving. Nowadays, they're too twitchy and make mechanical whirring and whining sounds they make. The best thing a Dalek does in the classic series is kill something, and glides away as if it was a mundane thing.

    Saward(Resurrection and Revelation), Shearman(Dalek), David Whitaker(Power and Evil) and Davies(S1+4 finale) were really good on the Daleks! I could have said Terry Nation but he wrote Planet and Destiny. I'd have them invade a different planet but this time have them have an empire and they take over 20 planets. Make the civilisations either become destroyed or into slavery and prisoners.

  • @Djayscratcher98

    Spot on, dalek and parting of the ways where perfect dalek representations, stolen earth i see more as a davros story, but the invasion scenes where excellent, everyone drops at the mere sound of exterminate, then the fleet flys in blasting everything, the millions of daleks swarming the valliant and UNIT, you really got the scence of how can we fight back its just pointless.
    Resolution i know people disliked it but i personally enjoyed it, it took the daleks back into fearful killing maniacs instead of a joke, and it was 1 single dalek who built a casing out of scrap and parts, showing the ferocity of this creature, it shows it dosent matter on the situation just give it a gun and you know its the end, seing the recon dalek slaughter a whole squad in seconds then a bloody tank, we need more of that stuff to show that these things are super tough to beat and it forces the doctor to get dark and violent like in parting of the ways, everybody died in that episode and evan tho we didnt really see it they more or less destroyed the earth to create a paradise. Sorry for the ramble i love daleks hahaha

    how to make the daleks scary. get rid of moffat.
    this isn't moffat hating for the sake of moffat hating. but look at the daleks in the RTD era compared to the moffat era.
    in the RTD era, the Daleks were literally all powerful it took every deus ex machina ever created to destroy them.
    when compared to other threats they made them look like children. (case in point daleks own the cybermen)
    they were ruffless. in manhatten when Solomon is pouring his heart out to them to show compassion. they just shot him there and then.
    the valiant vs sontarans. valiant wins. valiant vs daleks. daleks win.
    now look at moffat and see what defeats the daleks. regeneration energy. and their own sewers.

    I agree with you on parting of the ways that it is a perfect dalek story,so is dalek and too me so is The Stolen Earth/Journeys End with the reality bomb idea is something that is pure dalek,daleks being the only creatures left in the universe is an idea explored since genesis and it really shows their insane idea of "purification" and the lengths the daleks and davros will go to achieve their ideal destiny.Bad Wolf/Parting Of The Ways and Dalek were masterpieces,my favourite stories in nearly all of who history them being beaten by Genesis,Earthshock and Androzani although Revelation is also on my list,the death count in that episode is just what a dalek episode should be.They kill innocents on the street etc.I really enjoyed Resolution and think it went with your video etc.I think the main problem with the daleks isn't the fact they are overused they were just misused for a long time.

    It may and it does now seem stupid to me, but until people climbed out of the Dalek props on television, I was terrified of them. I couldn't convince myself, that they weren't real. I was thirty five, when the spell was broken. I still understand they are a Nazi substitute, but I know they are fictional now. I know hate what they are, but can't feel the level of fear I used to.
    There is a classic Who story where one potential companion dies, because of a Dalek weapon, that ages her to death, rather than her being directly extermined by them.

    I agree that we are overdue a proper scary Dalek story, however I do like to defend stories like Magicians Apprentice because sometimes its good to take the piss out of the Daleks to show that they aren't invincible.
    Speaking of 'how they are shot' I will always think back to Day of the Daleks for those scenes where UNIT and the ogrons just bloody run at eachother and fall over unconvincingly while literally only 3 daleks shuffle passed them. I love classic Who but MY GOD there are some bad scenes lol.

      Arguably, they've been able to climb stairs since the sixties. There are at least a couple of moments in The Chase. Remembrance... is the first time we see it happen, but it's long been an implied ability.

      They must have got up those steps of the Mary Celeste somehow. The staircase in the haunted house too, come to that.

    Aside from David Tennant's partial regeneration, none of the iconic Doctor Who villains have ever been directly responsible for a Doctor's death. Technically the first Doctor died of old age , not the Cybermen. And technically The 10th Doctor was not killed by the Master but by radiation. Imagine the impact it would have if he was beat by one of them just once.
