SoutheastBackpacker sorry for the late reply. Yup, it was quite windy in mid-May @ Deep Creek, never know, next year it could be 60, clear and calm. the rest was great, low mileage along the Crest trail to Mt. Mitchell, beautiful alpine scenery and a slight rollercoaster hike (keeps it interesting). Dropped down to Commissary Ridge campsite which is huge, lots of tent spots (and hammock spots) and a sweet communal fire pit. and water nearby. hike out was muddy but an easy 10'ish miles down and north back to Colbert Creek. have pics and more info if you need any more beta. Heading to Linville Gorge in 3 wk's, can't wait for that one.

Thanks for the video. How reliable was the water source at Deep Gap? Were you able to filter water there?

We came up the Colbert Ridge Trail which has a very reliable source about a quarter mile from the top(Deep Gap), once you're at Deep Gap or along the ridge line the sources seem very unreliable. Best bet would be to drop down to the source on the Colbert Ridge Trail if you don't find anything. It's runoff that goes right across the trail. It's a very steep section of trail, fyi.

Did you guys need to get a permit to camp at Deep Gap?

No, Deep Creek campsite is outside the State Park boundaries and thus did not need any type of reservation, same for Commissary Ridge campsite beyond the southern border of the St. Park itself. I believe the Pisgah National Forest website speaks to this but it's been a while.
