Here's what's fascinating about Toy Story 2: After doing some detective work, "Woody's Roundup" appears to have been inspired by two real western TV shows. Howdy Doody (a western cowboy puppet), and Roy Rogers. One of the cast members on the latter show looks almost EXACTLY like Prospector, and Rogers' wife Dale Evans may have also been a source of inspiration for Jessie (she was also a cowgirl and also assisted Roy often). The original Roy Rogers show ironically appears to have ended around 1957, the same year "Woody's Roundup" was supposedly canceled. It's VERY interesting! My Dad IIRC even said he has some memories of watching that show a bit when he was young.

And let that be a lesson, when that systems guy brings up his daily backup system and explains that it's actually really useful saving all 2TB of your system files once every 24 hours and making sure that's working right is genuinely a good use of his time, don't brush him off like he's some paranoid lunatic because he's the most sane man in the room.

yeah because people in general work with servers and not with normal PCs, pretty much if you don't work with networks or you're not a developer(and even this depends so much on where you work) having Linux in your PC is wasted of time and money, most of the desktop linux community are just people feeling special for using linux, because linux is not capitalism.

Fun fact: While Pixar successfully saved the movie from being deleted, what most people don't know was that this was for the original direct to video version of Toy Story 2. The original version had a smaller budget with a talking Bullseye, and Jesse as an evil talking cactus and many other differences. This was before John Lasseter got involved as he was still working on A Bug's Life. When he got to see the original footage, he was very upset and felt the story was too predictable and wasn't close to having funny humor and decided to get involved to save the movie. And so after 2 years of animation and almost deleting the entire thing, the footage ended up being deleted anyway in favor of the final film. Disney still wanted to keep the movie's release date of 1999 but Pixar rewrote the script on a weekend and had to re-animate the entire movie for 9 MONTHS! Unlike most Pixar movies which take 3 to 4 years to animate. And yet somehow, after rushing everything with the script and animation, it ended up becoming a sequel that's better than the original by many.

A few months ago I almost lost a 30 minute short film I've been working on for the past 8 months only by myself, I already had it finished but was still tweaking some details when my whole computer just crashed, I tried to recover the data in the hard drive but it was toasted, imagine all that time editing it, scoring it, convincing actors and people to act on it, filming on harsh places with tight schedules only to lost it all in seconds, it was the worst moment of my life, not to be dramatic but honestly I just wanted to die, the thing is after a few days of deep depression, I remembered I rendered an early cut of the film to send it to my brother on Dropbox, and when I checked there it was, for some reason I didn’t even reacted that much, but I'm still glad I got to recover it.

@@infiniti2011 There's plenty of user-friendly versions of Linux actually, with the learning curve really being about on par with learning to use a Windows or Mac for the first time
@@zelpyzelp Yeah, but for the average consumer, the time it takes to get linux running isn't worth it. They lose access to lots of Windows / Mac specific programs and features, it's hard to troubleshoot unless you're a developer, and there's no standard edition. There's also no technical support, which is really important for a lot of people who aren't as familiar with the computer.

I am not even sure those permission were protocols that existed in 1998, much less widely known and practiced.
And make sure to spellcheck your commands when deleting things as root.

@@SilverBullet27188 Computers started out as mainframes. Having a "real" computer at your desk for your personal use was this strange from the 1980s ,1990s and 2000's. Before that, people used terminals to acces a central computer. The problems of user acces and permission are literally older then "personal computers" - the predate the "personal computer". But hey? Pixar was just co-founded by Steve Jobs - a forerunner of personal computers. How was that company supposed to know about this old computer science stuff?
I've heard this story told and retold half a dozen times, and each time it is both fascinating and terrifying.
Plot twist: The employee was really trying to sabotage the movie by “accidentally” deleting the files.

Still don’t know how you “accidentally” type ‘rm -rf *’
This was before the days of --no-preserve-root, so it's possible the employee cd'd into a directory he wanted to wipe and tried to use a relative path like 'rm -rf ./*' and accidentally left out the period, which would result in the disastrous 'rm -rf /*' and wipe your root partition. (More plausible than you think, I miss characters all the time when I'm typing quickly and I don't depress a key all the way, and generally when I'm typing fast enough that this is an issue, I'm not paying attention to whats on the screen before sending the command.) I'd argue this is the most likely/plausible explanation.

@Pankaj Kushwaha You don't necessarily have to be root in order to nuke everything in /. The account could've been assigned root privileges or been using sudo.
@Pankaj Kushwaha You can assign root privileges to a standard linux user by assigning them GID 0. So any commands run in the context of said user (without sudo) would now have the same privileges as root. sudo privileges are different because the command only gains root privs if it's run through the sudo command. sudo su opens a shell as the user root and displays it on the current vty. Assigning a user GID 0 would effectively make that user a root user.

Quick Tip: Once files are deleted from your drive. DO NOT put newer files into the drive. It will replace your hope of restoring those data. Then, use any recovery software to recover those files.
Quicker Tip: Does it even matter if there's a backup that was fresh enough for them to start from?

Actually, it did. The ways harddrives and other system files work hasn't really changed, the files are marked as 'deleted' and the space opens up, but all that really does is allow your OS permission to overwrite that particular section of your drive. It was still there, not zeroed out.

'Trash bin' is a feature of whatever file browser you use, not the operating system. Windows also has a command line and it also has a delete command that deletes files irreversibly.
I'm going to backup my files right now.

When I was 16, I was helping an old lady photographer to reinstall Windows. She took photos professionally for other people and had customers.
We moved all the important files from C to D disk. Then I started formatting all partitions, only to realize that C and D are the SAME DRIVE just split. We somehow recovered some images, while some were lost.
I never had this amount of anxiety in my life ever again.
If C and D were the same drive, it shouldn't have deleted the files on D if it was partitioned correctly.

Deletion doesn't actually delete files, it just flags them as not existing so they later can be overwritten. So they could possibly have restored it from the server if they were lucky.
Exactly, as long as they pulled the plug quick enough to prevent over-writing, that is. A data recovery team could have recovered everything on the drive(s).
Yeah, but their IT department was clearly incompetent enough to not have backups for A MONTH.

Uh wouldn't it had been easier to download the film onto a floppy disk or a tape, then carry that to the studio, instead of an entire computer.
Sort of. But a floppy disk only can carry less than 2mb (all those files should occupy lots of mbs, actually lots of gigabytes) and a tape can't store 3d models but plain footage and audio so also would be useless.
The best option it's remove the hard drive with the backup and connect it to the main computer in order to copy the files directly and faster.
Linux is not a "command line operating system.". There are multiple desktop managers that you can install. Microsoft Windows also has commands that you can use to delete your files and Mac OS is also a Unix-based OS that uses the same terminals as Linux. The majority of the internet runs on Linux and it offers very robust solutions.
Why did the systems technician or engineer delete those files "manually"? Because loading them into a graphical interface would have likely taken much, much longer due to the number of files.
The lesson here is always backup your files, likely using one of the many robust open source solutions built on Linux.

In Toy Story 4: a license plate read: RMR F97 near the start of the movie, which is an Easter egg related to the delete command, rm -r -f in 1997 which you guessed it, deleted the whole Toy Story 2 movie.
And that's why today the rm - rf / command requires the --no-perserve-root flag as a failsafe - so you can't accedently delete all of your files.
you can make small changes to that and you won't need --no-preserve-root
But it's still easy to do cd foo; rm - rf /* instead of rm -rf ./*
You can still delete all Project Files without it.
rm -rf / is the only one to actually have a failsafe, so you're still able to accidentally delete files.
Yeah but if the project folder isnt specally protected rm -rf * will still do the trick, system files wont be gone but everything else ...
I feel bad for the guy who deleted the files in the first place.
