The traffic on the road to the Goldfields enriched the merchants of Kyneton. 85 kilometres from Melbourne.
Major Thomas Mitchell, New South Wales Surveyor General crossed and named the Campaspe River on his 1836 expedition. Charles Ebden was the first European occupier of the region that included the Kyneton townsite. He set up a head station for his sheep run at Carlsruhe, on the 26th May 1837.
Unlike a majority of towns in the area, Kyneton predates the Separation of the Port Phillip District from the Colony of New South Wales and the Victorian gold rushes, having been established in 1850, whereas the gold rushes started the year after. Construction of Kyneton’s oldest surviving stone building, the Church of England Rectory, located at 61 Ebden Street, commenced in 1850 and is a rare surviving example of a pre-gold rush and pre-separation dwelling.
At this time, Kyneton was a growing rural centre, and served as a major stop for those heading to the gold rushes at Mount Alexander and Bendigo.
Kyneton offers tourists several points of interest locally including the Botanic Gardens (established in the mid-1800s and several walks along the Campaspe River.
Various Farmers Markets and festivals throughout the year make the town popular as a day trip destination.
Kyneton Museum, located in the old Bank of New South Wales building (built in 1856, houses an extensive collection of local historical items.
There are many gift and craft shops in Piper street and also many great Cafes and restaurants.

Lovely tour of Kyneton! I always enjoy your Heritage walks, learning about the history of the area and seeing the historic buildings. The college house in piper Street was my dads childhood home from the 30s until when his dad sold it in 1974.

The "blue" stone of the railway station doesn't seem very blue... is there another reason they call it bluestone? Lots of really nice stone buildings. Wish we had more stone buildings around us. The ones we have last forever. Wood structures just rot and collapse once left for even a few years to themselves. There's an old British colonial town near us that was abandoned 250 years ago and all that's left of all but one of the buildings are a few cellar holes. The stone walls marking yards and fields are stull there, but aside from the holes and the walls you've never know anything was ever there. If Kyneton were abandoned tomorrow, there would at least be recognizable ruins in 250 years.... probably some really cool ones.
Ruby certainly seemed to have had enough by the end of this one huh?
It is a grey looking stone with a blue undertone. In Victoria, what is known as bluestone is a basalt or olivine basalt. It was one of the favoured building materials during the Victorian Gold Rush period of the 1850s. In Melbourne it was extracted from quarries throughout the inner northern suburbs, such as Clifton Hill, Brunswick and Coburg, where the quarry used to source the stone for Pentridge Prison is now Coburg Lake. Bluestone was also sourced in many other regions of the Victorian volcanic plains, and used in towns and cities of central and western regions, including Ballarat, Geelong, Kyneton, Port Fairy and Portland. It is still quarried at a number of places around the state.
Glad you enjoyed these Bluestone Buildings, They have stood the test of time. Where Peter talks about Caroline Chisholm, that bluestone building all that remains standing are the walls. A local said that they are planning to restore her home.
