    I just saw this show friday night. I want to say I went in with low expectations, but wow did the show prove me wrong. I had read the book and seen the movie beforehand so i knew what i was getting into, but personally the musical nailed the satire better than the book and movie. I highly recommend seeing it as the cast is incredibly talented, the show brings a new feel to the broadway musical, the design and lighting was damn near perfect, and I honestly haven't stopped thinking about the show since. I know this rehearsal looks messy, but it does not reflect the end product.

    I would also just like to remind people this is a preview! It's not the show, they still have time to clean things up! I think it looks fantastic!

    It's so sad read the comments from 4 years ago, hating the show because a video of a rehearsal. American Psycho closed so so soon, i hope for a revival someday

    remember when a show pulled the plug because of online hate creating disinterest and the show was actually really good so a lot of talented people lost their jobs because people judged a show before it even opened??? think about that before you comment...

    Saw the show last night, I have to say after talking about it and listening to the whole London cast recording I have to say I'm kind of in love with it, the set is absolutely stunning and the lighting is probably the best I have ever seen, this dancing was really cool, and the songs were incredibly catchy ( and yes I mean the original ones not the pop song covers , but obviously they were great too) overall it's a pretty great show and Ben Walker is a perfect Patrick Bateman who could even rival Christian Bale, while I'm scared the show won't get the lifetime it deserves I highly recommend seeing it because while yes some of the writing is silly and the sex scene is so gratuitous its actually funny (which I guess if they are trying to play it like the movie than that somewhat makes sense but trust me if you see it you'll know what I mean) overall pretty great show much better than I was expecting

    American Psycho is both my favourite book and film, and let me say, this is hysterical. I love it. It's so 80s.

  • @StefanTonioSampson
    @StefanTonioSampson 8 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    One thing a lot aren't getting i think.... is that the tone/feel and sound are going for an 80s feel....because that time- during the heady financial boom where assholes like Patrick Batemen (the American Psycho), is a big part of the story....
    What i've gathered from articles on the show- is Duncan PURPOSELY went for a very pop music/ 80s synth sound...and the choreo is MEANT to mirror the kind of semi-corny 80s music video look....
    Anyone who was around at the time and watchd MTV will recognize some of the dance moves in all this Preview clips...
    These were BARE BONES previews....i'm WAY intrigued to see the finished product.....

      I'm surprised that there are people criticising the music. This is the freshest soundtrack I've heard from Broadway/West End musical theatre in a while... and it's literally sprinkled with songs from the 80s. I'm actually writing an 80s-themed musical myself with a similar concept for the soundtrack but Sheik has done so superbly here already I think

    The comments of "this is terrible" etc, personally I have to disagree. My own thoughts is that Broadway is getting something very different, new and exciting. When it was first announced back in 2012 I thought they were nuts, the London run proved me very much wrong.
    Of course this will now mean it will probably tank, but if that means the UK gets a touring production of it, I'll be happy

      This musical is an embarrassment to the broadway community. It should mot be on the broadway stage in any capacity. Thank god for shows like "Hamilton" which show that musical theater CAN be thriving today more than ever. It's failures like this show that remind us how great the masterpieces truly are.

      +Tyler Egan nah. Not trying to start a war here but I thought American Psycho was one of the coolest things on Broadway, and Hamilton is completely overrated. They were both new and innovative, but I think having the founding fathers rap is more of a gimmick than a good concept.

      +Reggie Rodriguez Yeah, done both. Every video I've seen of this so far is absolute garbage. Also, you shouldn't need to have seen the source material for this to at least be good, if confusing. This is just poorly written, poorly directed, the choreo in every video is incredibly basic and often times sloppy even for a press rehearsal.

    • @reggierodriguez6546
      @reggierodriguez6546 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +RazirCSGO This is a rehearsal not the actual show. Some musical acts has been changed. Second, I wasn't suggesting that in order for the show to be good, that you must see the movie or read the book. I'm simply insinuating that in order for anyone to understand this scene that they should first watch the movie or read the book. One thing I've never understood is how people gives a bad review on something they haven't seen in person. Have you seen this musical live and in person?

    • @reggierodriguez6546
      @reggierodriguez6546 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +RazirCSGO This musical has great reviews thus far and as your negative criticism about this show being absolute garbage. There's a lot people that would disagree with you. I'm one of them. Take care

    • @devinodriscoll
      @devinodriscoll 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It's about how these characters are trying to one-P each other with something as petty as a business card. If you read the novel or movie (which, mind you, is extremely fucked up), you'll see that it is a criticism of 1980's yuppie materialism, vanity, sexism and greed. In the book/movie, Bateman is so enraged by this that he murders a homeless man and his dog. This number also shows how unhinged Bateman is about being shown up. If you can stomach either the book or movie (which contains themes such as rape, violence, canibalism and animal cruelty), you'll get a better understanding of the point Ellis was trying to make when he wrote _American Psycho._

      @devinodriscoll 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No, they don't. If you listen to the London Cast of "Cards", you'll actually hear that, WOW, it actually sounds really nice! So, it's not the fault of Sheik, because he actually wrote a pretty good show, the actors just need to clean up their performances.

      @StefanTonioSampson 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +TheAki13
      Part of the idea is that it's taking place in the 80s... so..they are going for that 'music video is a new medium'/ synthesizer everything kind of feel... The moves at kinda 'meant' to be a bit dated.... (i think...lol)
      U read interviews with Duncan or pieces on the show... and they say it's purposely kinda 80s 'plasticky'......

    • @Kafka779
      @Kafka779 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +TheAki13 it's less about capturing the story and more about capturing the ideas and themes of American Psycho. The songs are meant to be shallow and synthetic. I honestly did not appreciate or even tolerate the musical until I read the book.

      Is the Broadway cast really that bad?
      That makes me depressed.
      I listened to the London Cast Album, and even though the music is non-obstrusive (as intended as a character choice for Bateman), the music and harmonies sound nice. I was getting excited to see the show.

    Why they sound like a boy band with too much auto tune

    • @devinodriscoll

      Duncan Sheik explicitly wrote the harmonies so that it would sound almost like auto tune. If you listen to the London Cast and the harmonies in the recording, they're just A++.
