  • Much better than yesterday and my meniscus pain went down as the race progressed. Now, about 8 hours later it is still almost pain-free.
I made one stupid mistake to #4 where I had planned to stay on the animal paths until the junction NNW of the control, but then I decided to try to cut over, and when I met several obvious but unmapped marsh areas (they might have been dry when the surveyor checked this area?) I hesitated a lot and started searching in all open areas. I think I lost 45-60 seconds here.
The worst mistake to on control #9 where my intention was to run along the contours, verify my position when I crossed the path and then take bearing to the control. I had lots a bit more elevation than planned to the path and did not correct enough, but when I got to the correct distance and saw the rocky reentrant in front of me I was pretty sure I was below the control and turned uphill. Coming up like I did I started scanning for the obvious plateau shown on the map in front of the control boulder, but when I didn't see this I turned back down. At this point my tracking shows that I must have been just 10-15m from the flag. The problem was that there was no plateau at all, the boulder was located in a very smoothly falling hillside.
I lost 3-3.5 minutes here which was the difference between an OK and a very good race given my current form.
    System setup:
GoPro 11 Black in Action (max field of view) mode
Garmin 735 Forerunner to record the track log
QuickRoute to edit/tweak the track log and determine control punching times
Avidemux to merge the GoPro video parts together, trim the end points and extract audio and video to separate files.
OrientView merges the video with the track log from QuickRoute and generates a silent video
Finally ffmpeg is used to merge the silent video with the original audio.
