Great video, excellent idea of using the tomato cages under the cover! I used mesh wire baskets from the 5 quarters store (that I bought last year to use as harvesting baskets) under my row cover to protect my kale and broccoli plants in my raised beds. I have found so many uses for them and will be able to use them for many years. QUESTION: I only have a granular 10-10-10, would that burn up my new transplants if I were to use it as you have used in this video? Thanks for the great ideas and inspiration!

Do all these things apply to Romaine lettuce? I built a 1-1/2' x 4' x 12" deep cedar planter with a 4' tall cage and wheels so we could roll it into the garage on colder nights and we're going to experiment with cold weather plants this year. If the fleece is as effective it is fine. I just have tarps. I also liked a non porous material. If the fleece is really tight and limited heat escape, it's as good to use. Gary, I tried to compost my fall leaves in my garden. Made a chicken wire oval put in the leaves and kitchen scraps all winter. It didn’t compost too much, but the pile did go down a bit. What should I do with it now that it’s almost time to plant my cool crops. Dig it in, put it in a separate container?
Thats normal. It might take the summer. If the compost is out of the way, just leave it. You can use some of it as mulch, other wise you let the process continue. Depends on your weather and location. Some are bolting due to higher temperatures where I'm in. They're under shade cloth too. But it could be too much water from the rain. Read somewhere that it could cause them to bolt.
I have a lot planted, too much to chance on the weather, assorted leaf lettuce, potatoes already up, German Giant Radish, Malaga Radish, Giant Radish of Sicily, French Breakfast Radish, China Rose Radish, Oregon Mammoth snow peas, Golden Sweet snow peas, Detroit Dark Red Beetroot, Detroit Golden Beetroot, Bok Choy, Komatsuna, Danvers, Purple Top Turnips, Tokinashi Turnip, Red Russian Kale, Giant Radish of Sicily, Japanese Giant Red Mustard, Tokyo Bekana Mustard, Rainbow Swiss Chard, Fordhook Swiss Chard, Lucullus Swiss Chard, New Zealand Spinach, Chijimisai, and Tatsoi. It is too much to risk losing. Here in Talladega Alabama, the temperature is forecasted to drop to 24F Sunday Night. I already have my greenhouse closed for the next three days. Tomorrow I will be breaking out the row covers, and tarping the raised beds, and covering the grow pots as best I can, some with plastic, some with a double layer of towels, and hoping everything makes it through the freeze. If all goes well, Monday is seed start day for cucumbers and squash.

Great vid! And love the look of that bed! We're scheduled for a balmy 13° F tonight 🙄- hopefully, you're on your way out of the colder nights. Slugs, snails - don't have that issue; earwigs though - oy. Decimated my lettuce and cabbage plants. I had "lace" for leaves. 😉
Ugh yes Earwigs are the worst! Any tips to combat them they destroyed my celery last year
Yeah lucky in the sense I dont really get earwigs. Hard frost should be leaving here soon!
Use oil and splash of soy sauce in a bowl. It lures earwigs to it and drown them. I hate them so much.

Does organic fertilizer feed the plant or just the soil which in turn feeds the plant?
I live ... zone 6b and we are supposed to have a nother cold snap ... next week 23f at night .... do you think I can ...plant my cold crops??
I planted mine but covered them. That is a bit cold but really depends on how long it stays that cold through the night. I errored on covering them.

I left some of my bunching onions in the ground last year, and they wintered over and are up 5” already. I am also in CT.
Great video, excellent idea of using the tomato cages under the cover! I used mesh wire baskets from the 5 quarters store (that I bought last year to use as harvesting baskets) under my row cover to protect my kale and broccoli plants in my raised beds. I have found so many uses for them and will be able to use them for many years. QUESTION: I only have a granular 10-10-10, would that burn up my new transplants if I were to use it as you have used in this video? Thanks for the great ideas and inspiration!

Do all these things apply to Romaine lettuce? I built a 1-1/2' x 4' x 12" deep cedar planter with a 4' tall cage and wheels so we could roll it into the garage on colder nights and we're going to experiment with cold weather plants this year. We started with all lettuce seeds and Romaine, and they look pretty healthy. Do you forsee any issues or advise advice to offer?

can you plant your lettuces in the ground or do you need to plant from inside? I always thought these were direct sow. Silly me
Curious as to why you don’t use something like Agribon a agricultural fleece instead of a tarp?
If the fleece is as effective it is fine. I just have tarps. I also liked a non porous material. If the fleece is really tight and limited heat escape, it's as good to use.

Gary, I tried to compost my fall leaves in my garden. Made a chicken wire oval put in the leaves and kitchen scraps all winter. It didn’t compost too much, but the pile did go down a bit. What should I do with it now that it’s almost time to plant my cool crops. Dig it in, put it in a separate container?
Thats normal. It might take the summer. If the compost is out of the way, just leave it. You can use some of it as mulch, other wise you let the process continue.

Depends on your weather and location. Some are bolting due to higher temperatures where I'm in. They're under shade cloth too. But it could be too much water from the rain. Read somewhere that it could cause them to bolt.

I have a lot planted, too much to chance on the weather, assorted leaf lettuce, potatoes already up, German Giant Radish, Malaga Radish, Giant Radish of Sicily, French Breakfast Radish, China Rose Radish, Oregon Mammoth snow peas, Golden Sweet snow peas, Detroit Dark Red Beetroot, Detroit Golden Beetroot, Bok Choy, Komatsuna, Danvers, Purple Top Turnips, Tokinashi Turnip, Red Russian Kale, Giant Radish of Sicily, Japanese Giant Red Mustard, Tokyo Bekana Mustard, Rainbow Swiss Chard, Fordhook Swiss Chard, Lucullus Swiss Chard, New Zealand Spinach, Chijimisai, and Tatsoi. It is too much to risk losing. Here in Talladega Alabama, the temperature is forecasted to drop to 24F Sunday Night. I already have my greenhouse closed for the next three days. Tomorrow I will be breaking out the row covers, and tarping the raised beds, and covering the grow pots as best I can, some with plastic, some with a double layer of towels, and hoping everything makes it through the freeze. If all goes well, Monday is seed start day for cucumbers and squash.
Yeah a dip to 28 and I am okay but 24 is caution. I have used towels with great success.
