    What do baby chicks need? I ordered chicks, and they came IN THE MAIL! As part of our permaculture plan on our homestead, these chicks will grow up and move through our fields and clean up after the livestock have grazed the pasture. This will relieve fly pressure and manure will get stirred into the soil. The chickens will leave behind their own fertilizer, and as all the animals rotationally graze, the pastures will get better and better with each passing season. In this video I build a chick brooder using an old packing box, some zip ties and hardware cloth. I talk about how to acclimate new chicks to their environment, how to regulate heat in the chick brooder, and what to do about pasty butt. Moving to Nashville has been a huge endeavor, starting over with all things farm has kept me very, very busy the past few months, but I certainly am not going to complain about all the baby floof we've got around here right now! I'm Anne of All Trades. In NASHVILLE, I have a woodworking, blacksmithing and fabrication shop, a selection of furry friends, and an organic farm. Whether you've got the knowledge, tools, time or space to do the things you've always wanted to do, everything is "figureoutable." I became "Anne of All Trades" out of necessity. With no background in farming or making things, I wanted to learn to raise my own food, fix things when they break, and build the things I need. 8 years ago I got my first pet, planted my first seed and picked up my first tool. Hi Anne, I would love to see a video of the chicks cutting their way out of the egg. It never ceases to amaze me when nature works all these ways to make sure that animals of all sorts can hatch and grow no matter if it is in air or water cold or warm.

    We raised hatchlings in the living room fireplace for the first few weeks, then moved them to the garage, and then finally to the coop. It was easier to keep them safe and warm in the fireplace than anywhere else, and we could tend to them easier. A board propped against the fireplace opening kept them in, but I like your method too. We just found it easier to keep them warm inside the house. My grand daughter (with the goats) has chickens too.

    My second-most favorite fastener is a hog ring. They make awesome hinges if you make bare cattle panel gates or fences because they last longer than zip ties, which is of course my #1 favorite fastener. Baling twine - I save it, but rarely actually use it. #3 is a t-post wire clip (get a clip bender if you don't have one; I love that thing)

    • @AnneofAllTrades
      @AnneofAllTrades  4 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @kirstenwhitworth8079
      @kirstenwhitworth8079 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AnneofAllTrades BTW - try brightly colored zip ties. When/if they break, you can see them in grass, etc and pick them up so the birds and babies don't try to eat them.

    I'm glad that Surf Shark is sponsoring you, you deserve it. Do you know that lots of web backends have commonly available VPN detection libraries (they map exit points), and sites from bank of america to the BBC will refuse to do business with you if they detect a vpn? Of course I, (and the EFF), decry this as an attempt to do away with privacy, but it still is *_HUGELY_* common.

    Love having Chickens. My layers are Rhode Island Reds. They got decimated by a fox before we found the holes under the fence and closed them. Down to six active layers, but I have eight chicks in the stock tank. Hoping for at least four or five more layers this Fall, but our luck has gone to roosters in the past, so may have a lot of birds named Stew... I didn't know about those ceramic heaters. I'll have to get one for the hover. Love your bloopers!

    Just a question on the beak dipping (I have no experience). On TH-cam I see two camps, the you have to dip the beaks camp, and the I've never dipped beaks camp. How confident are you on the necessity of the dip the beak advice when some people with years of experience say they never dip beaks? (They might well have a higher death rate or not, I don't know which is why I ask. Is your advice based on actual data?)
