Even if you know the stuff how helicopters work, it is always a kind of magic to see them fly. Not to mention some extreme figure they can do like shown here. Good stuff.
I have the unbelievable respect for anyone who can fly a helicopter of any make or design! I have seen many, but I have never been in one. To, as a fixed wing pilot These chopper pilots are flying a "Controlled Crash" just seconds away from happening! I am "Not" putting any of these folks down! And the helicopters have had their incredible place in service for decades! I just don't want one! No Offence intended!
The rotors are linked in synchronicity through the same transmission. Therefore they rotate at the same speed and interweave to prevent them from smashing each other. There's also a height difference between the rear mast and front mast heights.
@@MrQuicksix Yes but in forward flight blade flapping does cause the two rotor disks to intersect each other. The blades on the CH-47 are fully articulated with flapping and lead-lag hinges so really the only reason they don't hit each other is because they are syncronised and intermesh like an eggbeater. Compared to a traditional single rotor helicopter with a tail rotor aileron cyclic works as normal, elevator is by collective difference between the front and rear rotors and yaw is by opposed aileron cyclic at the front and back. The rotors do have elevator cyclic (which on the CH-47 is called longitudinal cyclic trim) but this is controlled by the flight electronics and is only used to counter the nose down tendency in forward flight in order to reduce drag and the tendency to hover nose high (early CH-47s did not have this and the rotors had only aileron cyclic)

According to data approved for public consumption on fanboy sites, it sed 2 pilots are required at any 1 time in order to fly the aircraft. Duz that mean the aircraft in fact operate like how 1 of those 'tiller' type semi fire trucks work. What that essentially means is, there must necessary be another driver housed in the back of the rig for steering the rear most wheels in order for the lengthy truck to navigate thru tight-narrow neighbors. So is that likewise how it works with this Chinook ? Can someone in the know, please BSK to enlighten us in the dark ?
It controls exactly like any other helicopter, the only "difference" in the controls is that the manual refers to the collective lever as the "thrust control lever" As far as the main rotor mechanical systems go, collective works the same, aileron cyclic works the same, elevator cyclic works by increasing the collective on one rotor and decreasing it on the other (the pilot does not notice this, elevator axis on the cyclic stick works the same as a single rotor helicopter from the pilot's point of view). Yaw works by applying opposing aileron cyclic at the front and rear rotor to rotate the airframe. With no cyclic stick input the rudder pedals cause the aircraft to turn around it's center point however by applying aileron with cyclic stick with the rudder pedals the pilot can shift the rotation point forward or rearward. There is also something called the longitudinal cyclic trim actuator that applies some elevator cyclic to the rotors however the pilot has no control over this, it is managed by the flight computer (early CH-47's did not have this which is why they hovered nose high due to the slight forward slant of the two rotor masts on the CH-47). This system keeps the nose lower during hover and the airframe more level during high speed forward flight which reduces drag and increases efficiency and speed.
beaggyboy ... Each pilot has the same controls. Although a CH-47 always has two pilots, it could be flown solo, but not advisable. I have flown one solo for a short distance in Nam. It was an emergency situation. I told the crew chief to take the right seat. He had never flown a Chinook, but probably would learn fast if I had been shot.
Awful video, far too zoomed in, you need to mix between closeups and wide shots. Wide shots give perspective. Also you left the commentary in about the quick stop then edited it out. Lol
If you are going to post a video on TH-cam of an aircraft handling display like the chinook here, do it in its entirety and not the stupid over edited garbage you inflict on this occasion. A child could have done a better job with a mobile phone
You are right a few total pictures in it would be better. If you have ever been to RIAT then you will know that you don't stand there alone so it is sometimes impossible to follow the plane over the airfield because of the crowd who stands near you and who wants also a picture .And You have to make a choice or you zoom in or you goes for the whole landscape. The last year i fix A second dji pocket camera on my camera so i have the two . The images are not edited i show them as i filmed them i just cut them , these pictures are taken with a minimum distance of 400 m and a max of 2km . If you can do better be my guest .I know that not every filming is so good as i want but that's the reason that we try to film the display's several times in a season. So I filmed last year for the Belgian Air Force air to air with Vador the result you can see here as also the make of. I’ve flown on more Chinooks than I can shake a stick at. But hearing the C-box screaming on this particular aircraft is absolutely scary.
I would be pressing the push-to-test button on those chip detector lights every few seconds... just to be sure they work! 😱
While the close ups are cool, zooming out a little would give better perspective of it's turning and climbing capability.

The blades are made from rubber so it doesn't do any damage when they hit
