I love this movie. My grandfather showed it to me on VHS when I was a kid. Still get goosebumps whenever I see that final duel scene. The music by Ennio Morricone just makes it even better.
The acting, the music, the cinematography, everything in that sequence is masterful.

My dad loved this movie and in turn me and my brothers loved it. When my father passed away we played the sad soldiers song they sing in the POW camp at his funeral. I can’t hear that song without thinking of him.

One of THE greatest movies in all of film history. Epic in so many ways. The acting, the camerawork, the music,... it is what is called CINEMATIC GOLD. It is like Grand Opera in scope.
The movie that made Clint a megastar...when he got back from Italy, Warner Bros. immediantly gave him a big 10-year contract, and he still works for them today. An AFI top 100 ranked film--great pick and loved the take out singing, ladies!
Actually it's not on the list but it should be. Unforgiven, my 2nd favorite western after this movie is on the list at 68 (originally it was 98 but on 10th anniversary list it went up)
The scene from this movie that stuck me the most was when Blondie came across the dying Confederate artilleryman. He was just a kid, dying slowly, all alone. Except he wasn't alone, because Blondie found him. Tuco and Angel Eyes wouldn't have given a crap about him; Tuco would probably have robbed him while he died.
Blondie gave him a smoke, put his coat over him so he would be less cold as he bled out, and stayed with him til he was gone.
And that is the real sign that he is "The Good".
Tuco is selfish and greedy.
Angel Eyes is just plain evil.
Blondie is just a hard man... but he still has his humanity, unlike the others.
That scene always got me. Mainly because both knew that the end was coming, but Blondie gave him one last gift: being there for him. No words, no farewell. Just a complete understanding between two people that words can't touch. And when Blondie turned away at the last second, the soldier like that last puff of smoke was gone. I always saw that puff of smoke being his soul leaving the body before disappearing. It still gets to me. Always.
Then Blondie picks up the poncho. Timeline wise, this film is a prequel to the others, so it's a cool detail to link him finding the poncho, which he is wearing in the other 2 films.

The movie Historian about Spaghetti Western summed it up so nicely about the scene and says this as far as Clint could take his Man with the no name kind of indicating that would be the end of this Character. I wish someone comes up with a prequel with all these 3 characters growing up some where in US and showing their early life which led to this point in time.
Blondie actually proved he was "the good" on more occasions than that. He took pity on Tuco multiple times.
He gave the dying Captain his last wish by blowing up the bridge. That also saved lives on both sides.
This movie launched Clint Eastwood into stardom. I highly recommend you watch the other two 'spaghetti westerns' he did.

You guys should lookup "The Danish National Symphony - The Good the Bad and the Ugly " you will really enjoy it, it's only 6 minutes long. It would be worth a reaction the first time you watch it.

I must admit, the only reason why I watched that was I thought it was about strings breaking, conductors freaking out, generally mayhem. Needless to say I was pleasantly surprised.
In my opinion this is the second best western film of all time. The best is also by Leone and is "Once Upon a Time in the West." The first five minutes of this film are the most significant opening to a film you will ever see. Not a word spoken and one of the main characters is a fly. The film also has a marvelous musical score and each significant character in it has their own theme and Leone added one other theme which was for the west itself, since the land plays a significant part in the story. A wonderful film starring Henry Fonda (as a truly bad guy who makes Andel Eyes seem nice), Charles Bronson, Jason Robards, Claudia Cardinale (The first heroine of a Leone film). It is a masterpiece!
I just watched OUATitW again for the umpteenth time the other day and I can't agree. It had one or two memorable scenes. The opening one and the end scene where Claudia goes through the range of emotions, from apprehension, to happiness to sadness with just a few hints of facial expression in a few seconds is definitely memorable, but it's not enough to carry the film.
TGtBatU, is epic from the 1st scene to the last. Hell the whole 1/2 hr of the film from The Estasy of Gold thru the final showdown to the Epilogue of Clint shooting down Eli is just PERFECT film making. The soundtrack, editing, acting, cinematography is so perfect I get emotional just on the skill alone in making all those final scenes work. I really don't think another director has been able to capture ALL those elements of a scene for as long as that in the history of film making. Coppola maybe in The Ride of The Valkries scene in Apocalypse Now but it's nowhere near the length of this.
It's a crowning achievement in film making and I challenge anyone to come up with a sustained 1/2 hr of film where everything comes together that perfectly. It's is EVERYTHING a great film should aspire to! Masterpiece!
@@kowalski3769 I couldn't agree more with your assessment of the final half hour of TGTBATU, it's my favourite movie scene(s) of all time but I have heard from innumerable reviews and other sources the film "Come And See" has a sustained 40 minute sequence as it's finale which also has all the elements of film operating at the highest level but I keep putting off watching it (although seen snippets) partly due to hype and partly because it's supposed to be utterly devastating.
I've always thought if there's a half hour of film with any chance of topping TGTBATU's finale, it'd be that one because it takes a different approach in going for emotional turmoil which isn't challenging TGTBATU at it's own game and also could be more meaningful in it's impact as it conveys an emotional message. The only message TGTBATU's ending had is masterful filmmaking is awesome.
I think OUATITW had another memorable sequence in Henry Fonda's character Frank and his squad slaughtering the family, that was done brilliantly but overall the film never captured my interest as I admit the pacing killed it for me, will try on another day.
@@Mr.Goodkat Nice! I also love that you can see the tweaks and improvements that Leone made through the 3 films of The Dollars Trilogy. By the time he gets to TGtBatU he's perfected his craft. He took all he learned from the previous films and put all the elements together.
I've also heard good things about Come and See. I've been putting it off because of it's subject matter. I want to be in the right frame of mind when I see it.
They are both masterpieces for me I think Once shades it though definitely the best two westerns and by some margin although I do enjoy the first too dollars nothing comes close
Don't agree with you. I think this movie is far better than "Once Upon A Time In The West". The characters are richer and the music is 100% better than that stupid harmonica drolling on and on in "Once Upon A Time In The West." Making Henry Fonda a bad guy was just a total miscasting, too. He just doesn't do bad guys well.
I think it's amazing how universal the genre of the western is. Of course, it's very influential to American cinema however, westerns - especially those by John Ford were very influential to Akira Kurosawa's filmmaking. In this case, very heavy influence by Italian director Sergio Leone and of course an excellent soundtrack by Morricone - not to mention the Italian and Spanish actors who helped to make this film possible.
Very true. Westerns influenced everything. There is no Captain Kirk or Han Solo without Westerns, no Firefly or The Expanse, and a lot of samurai/ninja tropes too. Even something like the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles has kind of a similar backstory to the Lincoln County Regulators.

The line from Ford to Kurosawa to Leone is amazing, and shows how film is a universal language.
One of my favorite underrated scenes in this movie is when Tuco and Blondie are leaving the mission after Tuco has the fight with his brother, the Padre. Blondie saw the end of the fight, but says nothing about it as Tuco makes up a story about how he gets along so great with his brother, but instead Blondie shares his cigar with Tuco. I think this is the moment that solidifies the friendship between them.

For the role of Tuko the ugly, Director Leone initially wanted Italian actor Gian Mario Volonte who'd played villainous roles in both previous films. When Volonte turned the role down Leone turned to American actor Eli Wallach for the role, which I think was a great choice for the role. Clint Eastwood became a major star acting in What was coined Italian Spaghetti Westerns. The score for all Spaghetti Westerns was the composer Ennio Morricone who died in Rome July 10, 2020.
Good choice in more ways than one. Leone wanted Henry Fonda to play the villain in Once Upon a Time in the West but Fonda was wavering about taking the part. He asked a fellow actor friend of his if he should take the role. The actor he asked was Eli Wallach. Of course, Wallach told Fonda he would have a blast working with Leone and he would regret passing up the chance to do so and Fonda took the role.
Sergio Leone had grown tired Gian Maria Volonte on set as thought the actor was too theatrical and decided to hire Eli Wallach who in turn stole the show as Tuco and gave a top notch performance as did Van Cleef as Angel Eyes and Clint Eastwood as Blondie.
The skeleton seen in the final scene is of a real person, of an actor, who had expressed his last wish to act "even when dead". Wish fulfilled!

This took place during the Confederate War. The US has never had a civil war. Yet.
And yes, The Outlaw Josey Wales is a really good western.
Judging from the tombstone cartel, it was kinda like 1862-1863.
The U.S. Civil War was from 1861 to 1865. This movie is supposed to be set in Texas but Sergio Leone did not study American history well as Texas was not known for big American Civil War battles. "The Outlaw Josey Wales" is also partly set in 1860s Texas, specifically in 1865.
My dad showed this to me, and it always has a special place in my heart. Storytelling of the highest order done with film. So gritty, so different. I lovd the actors cast for this, with Tuco being my clear favourite. It was even better when I realized he plays the old man in another favourite film of mine, "The Holiday". The score alone is worth seeing this movie.

I'm going with Asterix and others recommending *"Once Upon a Time in the West"* . It's actually one of the most reacted to of all Sergio Leone movies. Per WikiPedia: "In 2009, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being 'culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant'. Eastwood turned down the lead role in this one and it was played by Charles Bronson, who did a great job with it.
Can't help adding one comment to "Once Upon a Time in the West": the opening scene is one of the most famous in filmography, for its use of visual images and background sounds to build suspense without the use of dialog. In the first 15 minutes 10 seconds, there are only 8 lines of text, with only 44 words total, spoken. Here they are:
"If you want a ticket you’ll have to go around … to the … front.
Three?
That’ll be seven dollars … and fifty … cents.
Frank?
Frank sent us.
You bring a horse for me?

So there you go! You're all set! (For the first 15 minutes anyway!).
Bronson was more fit for the role. The whole harmonica playing stranger just doesn't fit Eastwood that well.
I like this movie much more than "Once Upon A Time In The West". Richer characters and much better music.
The Good character was an inspiration for Boba Fett in Star Wars, and The Bad was an inspiration for Cad Bane.
Great movie pick with this one, this is where I fell in love with Clint Eastwood! Sergio Leone put out some great westerns, my favorite bring Once Upon a Time in the West with Charles Bronson! Great reaction!

I watched Trixy Blue's reaction to this movie, and she said if Clint Eastwood showed up at her door, she'd be like "anything you want". And now in this video, Vicki says she's going to be dreaming about Clint. Man, I wish I was Clint Eastwood. I'd have my passport and be on a plane to Bulgaria. I'd show up at Trixy's door. My first demand would be "call up Viki and get her over here. I'm ready to get started."
...Except that Clint is in his 90s now.
At 32:47, Eli Wallach, the actor playing Tuco almost died as his head was just a few inches from being hit by a part of the train, it's scary to watch.
He was also nearly killed when was sitting on horse during scene when the rope around his neck is shot and the horse took off with Wallach still hanging out with his legs as his hands were tied behind his back and held on tight with his legs to avoid falling off.
You guys should watch, “Once Upon a Time in the West” An epic by the same director as this.

When you said "the good " played Tuco dirty at the end ... i completely disagree ... not only did "the good" not kill Tuco but he left him half the gold ... he just played a little joke by scaring the shit out of him lol

Blondie figured Tuco deserved his cut of the gold but Blondie did not trust Tuco to give him the same courtesy. He left Tuco with half the gold but he also left him unarmed and without a horse after getting a head start on him. He knew Tuco had no real loyalty to anyone, including him.

"Blondie" was doing more than "a little joke" on Tuco in the ending scene. He deliberately left Tuco in a situation where he could be surrounded by riches but never make use of them. That's straight out of ancient Greek tragedies.
El Dorado had a young James Cann, not Kevin Costner it was made in 1966 Costner would have been 7 years old during filming.

All of these spaghetti westerns were made in Spain.
Another fun fact...the bridge explosion was massive band uncontrolled, and both actors almost died from flying debris. If u watch closely, u can see debris even small rocks and wood, flying right past them!! 😮😮😥
Eli Wallach also was almost decapitated while filming the scene where the train runs over the guard breaking the chain that was attached to them.
" Unforgiven" is also a great western, it was Clint Eastwood 's last epic film. He won several Oscars for it.

Thanks to this film, the great Clint Eastwood became world famous. He, Lee Van cliff and Eli Wallach are the perfect trio and the pillars of this movie. Ennio Morricone's music is just as beautiful and not to mention Sergio Leone's direction.

Highly suggest The Dollar trilogy. You watched #3 (The good the bad and the ugly) (1966) . #1 and #2 are A Fistful of Dollars (1964) and For a Few a few dollars More (1965). Also, Once upon a time in the west (1968) is fantastic. All of them are directed by Sergio Leone.

This film shows you what an amazing worldwide thing film is. This is an Italian director(Leone) shooting a film in Spain, set in the US Southwest, inspired by Japanese samurai films (Kurosawa), that were themselves inspired by American westerns (Ford). It all is an amazing stew.

This film in Italian language is something else entirely, a different world.

No, this was the actual movie that made Eastwood's career take off. The first 2 movies were made on very small budgets and it showed. This movie was on a considerably higher budget and had a much more detailed, sprawling story, especially with the battle scenes. This movie had Lee Van Cleef as well and he was well known by American audiences for his roles in various western-themed TV series while Eastwood had a been a staple on the TV series "Rawhide". You could accurately say that "A Fistful of Dollars" was the movie that made "Spaghetti Westerns" as a genre popular, however. If Eastwood had only made more of the low-end movies like "A Fistful of Dollars", he might have been stuck in this situation with Leone. When he made "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly", his stock in Hollywood as a sought-after actor went WAY up.

Sergio Leone was really a character, he had arguments with Clint Eastwood everyday on the set, yet Eastwood made one of his best performances. Also the spanish army sergeant - who was in charge of the explosives - made a mistake and detonated the briddge when cameras were not filming. Sergio Leone was so furious that the Spanish Army offered to build the bridge back and detonate it again!
Eastwood got his revenge on Leone when he quit the partnership after this movie and became a big name in Hollywood soon after. This was the last time he worked "for chicken feed".

The more I see this movie the more I notice the civil war and all the absurdity, futility and sadness of combat.
At the same time how much Tuco is a scoundrel, and the evil of angel eyes.

I would often wonder why anyone would want the bridge intact, and then it occured to me: an army would have wagons with supplies and cannons pulled by horses. Bridges and good roads were very important and worth fighting for.
My most favourite spaghetti western film. Seen it umpteen times and yet i want to see it again and again. The magic woven by master director Sergio Leone & the music score by master composer Ennio Morricone is simply out of this world. ❤❤❤❤
Ladies,if you heard the term "spaghetti western".the reason was because it was filmed in europe(Spain particularly),and the director and film crew were Italian or European. And it was cheaper to film there than in America at the time.
American westerns movies were waning in popularity at that time. Western-themed TV series were more popular. Italian directors embraced the western theme and revamped it, making the characters more raw and gritty and even the humor was frequently dark..
Sometime you might want to check out another Clint Eastwood western movie that isn't like most western movies called, "High Plains Drifter". It has a very interesting plot never told in any western before.
This is called a spaghetti western bcuz it was in American style,filmed in Italy 🇮🇹 by Italian film makers.

To give context for the "I've never seen so many men wasted so badly" line: the estimates for soldiers killed during the American civil war are between 620-750 thousand. Compare that to US soldier deaths in WWII, which was just over 400 thousand.

Perhaps you've heard of it since it's a well-known film in Eastern European countries.
By far the best Terence Hill movie is _My Name is Nobody,_ which is ostensibly not a "Trinity" movie, but may as well be. It also stars Henry Fonda in his last role in a western. While not written by him, the movie is based on an idea by Sergio Leone. Music was by Ennio Morricone, who spoofs his own music from the "Dollars" trilogy, which includes _The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly._ The whole thing is a strange mix of Trinity films and Sergio Leone films, and we are better for it.

Sadly, the one arm guy Tuco kills, was in the opening scene of Once Upon a Time in the West. Later in the filming, he suffered a broken rib incident, during filming, and died of a punctured lung!
Not exactly, he tried to commit suicide after he had finished filming by jumping out of his hotel window. He survived the fall but suffered broken ribs from it. One of the broken ribs punctured his lung while he was in the ambulance due to the bumpiness of the road they had to take to get to the filming location.
The actor Al Mulock actually tried to commit suicide while was staying at a hotel during filming of Once Upon A Time in the West. He jumped from hotel room window and survived but suffered massive injuries and died on way to hospital. He was wearing the outfit he wore in Once Upon A Time in the west. He was the one armed man The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.

I think you might enjoy Once Upon a Time In The West , Duck You Sucker and My Name Is Nobody. The last two are tragi-comedies, but they're all fun and a bit sad.
That,s why it was called"the wild west".next question "why were they called"spegetti westerns?"because most of the actors,film crew,were Italian or european.plus it was cheaper to make them in Europe back then I'm the1960,s.

Clint also became well known filmmaker behind the camera too on such movies as Flag of Our Fathers with his youngest kid, Scott Eastwood starring in the movie. He is 92 years old and still active. Clint is also a musician too having one of kids, oldest son, Kyle Eastwood playing bass. Kyle starred in 7 of his father's movies from as a child actor to last film in 2011.

Here’s a little factoid: During the filming of the scene where Tuco is using a train to free himself from the fat, dead Yankee, Eli Wallach almost had his head torn off by a steel step hanging down from one of the train cars.
The most interesting fact about the film is that Sad Hill cemetery never existed, it was hand built for this film by the Spanish army who also played the yank and reb soldiers on both sides
If you ever go to New Mexico, go to Glorietta, Valverde and Ft Craig, where the actual battles took place in 1862. The commanders were Confederate general Henry Sibley and Union Colonel Edward Canby.

Growing up on westerns I was all in when the spaghetti western formula started. Though he had success playing Rowdy Yates on the tv western Rawhide Eastwood wanted to change his good-guy cowboy image. A risky move but the absolute right one. Unforgiven, in my opinion, is still one of the best Westerns ever made.
There's another movie of the same style that's a comedy with a sequel. "They Call Me Trinity" Italian is a 1970 Italian Spaghetti Western comedy film written and directed by Enzo Barboni (under the pseudonym of E.B. Clucher) and produced by Italo Zingarelli. OMG, I loved it as a kid.

It's so fun watching your reaction to this movie. It is amongst my favorite Clint Eastwood movies. His westerns are adventures to watch :) An epic old west hero.
This western during the American civil war flick with Clint Eastwood is a great one. One of the best movies to watch the reason for the American Civil War is "Glory", it has a lot of famous actors in it..hard to go wrong too : ) Thank you for the reactions " )
