      After Kazakhstan declared independence from the Soviet Union, it was not until ten days later the USSR was officially disbanded. This means, for ten days, it was a country without any territory whatsoever.

      Collins English Dictionary gives the definition "to give support or approval", and Cambridge Dictionary of American English gives "to agree with or support an opinion, belief, or theory". However, some dictionaries, such as the Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary, do not appear to include this sense of the word, so it must be a less common one. My results come from the Onelook dictionary search engine at onelook.com/?w=subscribe.

  • @princeseroze

    3:35 Repeating "against their will" sounds somewhat sketchy to me....
    The Baltics never explicitly wanted to join the USSR, it was an ultimatum, so basically calling the occupation of the Baltics voluntary is to say that if one (the Baltics) gets threatened with a dagger to their throat, demanding either one's money or life, then giving their money is voluntary. That's just bizzare.

    • @deldarel
      @deldarel 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Lol, yeah. He gets his main points are clear, but the problem is in the details, lol.
      And I don't agree on that. I would if Uzbekistan would be bordering the caspian sea since it then technically would also border Iran, only over the water, but since this is not the case, you need to go to two countries, no matter if you're using a body of water or not, to get out on the ocean. The caspian sea is just a lake, actually.

    Chernobyl actually doesn't have much radiation at all anymore, but only because of the sarcophagus's they keep putting over the reactor. The radiation has been able to dissipate from the area enough to be able to live there for ~2 weeks with no gas mask without having to start worrying about getting very minor radiation poisoning.

    Speaking of Russia conquests like Alaska, Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands have been contested between Russia and Japan for a long time. Odd how this gets a lot less coverage than similar disputes in the South China Sea. Although it may be to a lower population in this region?

    • @ronnymaccaroni
      @ronnymaccaroni 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tom Kelly the disputes in the south China Sea are more important because of the scale of what the countries do to get them. China builds artificial islands for God's sake

    • @TomKellyXY
      @TomKellyXY 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Jon Håkon Olsen I think it's matter of perspective there. The Japanese-Russian wars were some time ago when different technology was involved. The disputed territories in the South China sea are largely uninhabited islands (with natural resources) whereas the Northern dispute involve places where some people (including the indigenous Ainu peoples) actually live. Not that these people have been treated well by either country but they're rather weirdly split between the two now.
      It's more of a social/ideological issue than the economic disputes with China (less exciting headlines) but it's still worth discussing on the topic of Russian expansion and changing borders. It's particularly weird since Japan got to retain it's prior annexation of Okinawa but "gave up" the Kuril Islands in the aftermath of WWII. It's viewed as case closed by Russia and the West but it's certainly not in Northern Japan.
