    Salvador also used to be Brazil's capital. Another example would be Portugal's capital being Rio de Janeiro for a few years, making it the only European country which had its capital outside Europe.

      No, Bonn is no capital anymore. They just call it "Bundesstadt Bonn", which doesn´t have a real value, except that they still have some ministries there.

      Agent Coco Also at the time, Germany had a very limited souvereignity over Berlin. It was jointly governed by the four victory powers of WW2. Only local administration was delegated to the inhabitants.

      Actually the "Ghost Entity" wouldn't be the German Empire, which was legally abolished, but the Weimar Republic. When the Nazis surrendered in World War 2, the state of Germany did not technically surrender but only the armed forces. When Hitler died he appointed Karl Donitz as the new "President" but this would technically be illegal as the Enabling Act did not change the fact that the President still had to be democratically elected by the German people.
      Therefore when Hitler died the Weimar Constitution effectively became valid again before Germany surrendered. According to the Weimar Constituition only a legally elected President could sign a deed of surrender. As a result only the army could technically surrender, not the state of Germany which still existed, but was now without a President or government.
      The allied forces then illegally occupied Germany and created two illegal constructs (BDR and DDR) on top of the still existing Weimar Republic. It's very much a legal anomaly if you want to get technical about it.
      The same is also the case with Danzig which was illegally made a part of Poland. The Free City of Danzig was actually completely neutral during the war as it's annexaiton was what started it. Therefore the Nazi annexation was illegal and it's occupation by the Soviets. Giving Poland Danzig would also then be illegal as the Free City of Danzig was neutral and occupied.
      So technically the Weimar Republic and the Free City of Danzig legally speaking still exist with their 1933 borders. They just don't have a government and exist in perpetual legal limbo, occupied by three illegal constructs (BDR, Poland and the Kaliningrad Oblast).

    Pakistan didn't do a bad job changing its capital. You believe it or not but Islamabad is actually at the center of Pakistan. Because the Himalayas are in the north and on those curvy roads you can't drive at a speed more than 60 km/h.However the south is almost plain. So, keeping in view the time it takes to reach Islamabad is same from the most northern parts of Pakistan and the most southern parts of Pakistan.

    A couple of main reasons for Islamabad being the new capital of Pakistan is that they wanted to assert more of a claim on the Jammu & Kashmir region that they are in dispute with India, & to be closer to the tribal areas that themselves assert their autonomy from the government. It was not so much centralization.

    So not talking about Germany once in this video? You know FRG/ BRD/ Western Germany kinda changed it twice in the last 100 years. From Berlin to Bonn after WW2 and then back to Berlin with the reunion. The twice thing would have been a cool fact I guess.

    • @ibx2cat
      @ibx2cat  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I decided not to cover the countries which newly existed and such (even though western germany technically existed since 45 the reunified germany is kind of like a new country in some ways) but that is one of the most fascinating examples

    • @twitertaker
      @twitertaker 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +ibx2cat hm i kinda see the where Western Germany can be seen as a new country. I personally thought of it that Western Germany just lost the area of GDR back then, existed continously until today, even getting the GDR area back. I feel that way its taught in German schools. But i understand your arguement too.

    • @swanpride
      @swanpride 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I disagree there.....Germany was always Germany, wall or not, and it is not like West Germany wouldn't have the theoretical option to keep the half of Berlin it still had as capital. The reasons why they didn't are quite interesting.

    • @twitertaker
      @twitertaker 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +swanpride You dont send your most important politicians into an area that is surrounded by your kinda enemy. The soviets could easily taken over West Berlin if they wanted to risk 3rd world war. Then the cancelor and president are in soviet captivity... Thats probably the main reason or did i miss it?

    Well, Brasilia is pretty well centered if you consider that most of the north (mostly Acre, Amazonas, Rondonia and Roraima) is uninhabited rainforest... also, oftenly countries don't really want to move the capital to the center, but away from the larger cities since that makes revolutions a lot harder.

  • @HamzaPKR

    Islamabad was chosen as Pakistan's capital city because it is defensible given the geography of the region. The city lies on the hills which eventually become the Himalaya mountains. It is surrounded on all sides by hills or mountains meaning that movement of foreign troops is seriously impeeded. It was choosen as the capital of the country at a time when armed conflict with India was regularly taking place (since becoming a nuclear power India does not pose an existential threat to Pakistan anymore but it did in the decades just after independence).
    As for Karachi being violent, that is a very recent phenomenon. For most of Pakistan's history Karachi has been a perfectly safe city and it is only in the decade following the US invasion of Afghanistan that the whole region was destabilized including Karachi which recieved an influx of Afghan refugees. Today Karachi is much safer again as the "Rangers" have been deployed in the city to aid the local police.

    Brasil changed its capital to Brasilia more as an economic tool to move cities in new agricultural area of country. by adding phosphorous and limestone to soil they expanded there agriculture lands 5x. also Rio and Soa Paulo where built wedged between the mountains and the sea, so basically they are about maxed out in size. You should do an episode on Brasil, very interesting geography and history of why its developed the way it did because of it.

    Hey, so the reason some countries say that they changed their capital to be more centralized is because it is centered around the populous areas of a country, not around its borders. Most of northern and western Brazil is unpopulated because of the rainforests, and most of the population of Australia is on the east coast.

    If Finland were to change capital away from Helsinki then Tampere would make most sense. It's the 3rd biggest one and biggest outside capital region and biggest inland city. Then if capital would need to be closer to geopraphical center then Oulu would make most sense. Finland's weber point (center of population) is at Hämeenlinna which is roughly halfway between Helsinki (100km) and Tampere (70km) so maybe that would be a weird compromise.

    Bangladesh used to be east Pakistan.
    The only thing united them was the religion and struggle for freedom.
    The location was chosen so that no single ethnicity would feel left out, to balance Bengal and Punjab.
    edit: Pakistan has google and google maps lol.

      Swap religion with language. Bengali nationalism didn't care about religion (Bangladesh had about 15% Hindu population then), but about the pride of the Bengali language

    You left out how Russian had their capital first Moscow then Saint Petersburg and then Moscow again (last switch happened about 100 years ago) In Finland there has been capital switching too, first capital was Turku, but when Russian taked over them from Sweden they ordered to switch capital to Helsinki. (that happened 195 years ago)

    All of the capital changes shown here are when countries have built a new purpose-built capital city. This video should be called "6 Countries That Built a New Capital City".
    I used to think New York & Sydney were capitals because they were the only cities I'd heard of in their respective countries. It was used as a trick question in school. I ended up hearing of Canberra before I heard of Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane or Perth for this very reason.

    Poland has changed capital 2 times! At first its capital was in Gniezno, in Wielkopolska, region, in which the Poland started existing. In 1038 it was moved to Cracow, because Gniezno was crashed. And it was capital for hundreds of years, but in 1609 it was changed to Warsaw, because it was more centralized and waterways were shorter than from Cracow, located in south. After WW2 communists wanted to centralize capital and move it to Łódź (almost in the center of Poland), because Warsaw was crashed in 84% by Germans. But by very hard and *great* work of workers it was reconstructed, so if you'll go to Warsaw, you won't think this city was in 84% reconstructed in 40's, 50's, 60's, 70s, and 80s.
    *AND YOU DIDN'T MENTION THAT?*

    For Australia, the compromise was that Melbourne would be the capital until Canberra was built. Consequently, Sydney has never been the capital of Australia, while Melbourne has. Of course, Sydney was the capital of the colony of New South Wales, which until around 170 years ago, included the territories of both the, first colonies, now states of Queensland and Victoria.

    *More facts about Brazil and its capital:*
    .Rio used to be the capital of Portugal
    .Brasilia is shaped like an aeroplane
    .Also only took 44 months to build Brasilia from scratch, including a giant artificial lake
    .One of the main reasons the capital was moved was because popular movements were very effective in Rio since the streets are narrow and it is faced against the ocean so war ships were often used to threat the government
    also... it kind of is a ... "big player"...but you know... maybe I'm biased
