Lucky you. I heard of Mike back in hs 1970. Didn’t have any interest such a wimpy sport until I was 23. I’ve been hooked since and am old enough to have met Mike in person. Alas, I never got the chance. Lucky you! Do you remember the best tip he gave you? Did he get crankier as he got older? He didn’t seem to care too much about money, fame or winning a PGA tournament- just hitting the driver long, consistently and accurately- any first hand impressions? His stories are almost enchanting and he must have great company.
With that swing he obvious couldn't putt; otherwise we'd hear of his many Professional Tour wins etc.... That swing is so amazingly fluid, and you can almost feel the freedom of it on your body. Thanks for posting.
I read somewhere once that this was exactly the case. He was not a good putter at all. There were stories of him getting so hyped up so he could hit these massive drives that he couldn't calm down around the greens and at times would even putt the balls straight through and off the green
I use to watch mike teach at the golf range in Studio City, CA. I watched him for at least 15 years. He was a tough ol coot and didn't suffer fools lightly. He gave me some pointers one day and they work to this day. He was a big guy , ruddy Irish face and had many great stories. One of a kind...
I believe there was a 25-30 mph tail wind that day, so that definitely helped. I've personally played the hole and it's a slight dogleg right that's basically flat until you get to the green which slopes upwards. Hard to believe, yes, but apparently his playing partners confirmed it and there were also a couple thousand witnesses in the gallery.
@@maninblack9850 the witnesses said it landed just short of the green before rolling...very hard summer conditions helped but the green was some 400yards and it almost made it
Lets take into account that In 1974, The R&A took a significant step toward uniformity when they made the larger 1.68-inch ball mandatory in their Open Championship. However, it was not until January 1990 just 32 years ago, that The R&A officially outlawed the smaller golf. ball
A 30 mile tail wind and rock hard fairway and he cut the dogleg by aiming at the green. The shot flight came up short of the green which was 400 yards away but rolled 115 yards to obviously past the green. I have seen that type of roll on the tour today. The golf gods were there for him.
Sir Swingman. Thanks for putting this together. Dennis Hopper had just moved back to Hollywood from New Mexico and spent hours kicking junk and watching Mike teach. He didn't golf yet, but said that Mike was from another planet. He'd know. This was when Mike was 70...and he still looked to be in the prime of life.
Amazing fluidity in that swing even into his 70's. I noticed that early in his career his swing was more upright with the right elbow away from the body. In his 70's it became flatter and his elbow was more ucked in ala Mike Dunaway. Either way the "step and throw" concept is evident.
Thanks for sharing this I use to practice at several of those courses and that range in Studio City. Mike was quite a guy. It was fun to see him at his home again.
I had a video produced and marketed. HOW TO HIT A GOLF BALL AS STRAIGHT AS YOU CAN POINT. It hit TV in 1998, sold 47K videos the first month. Sales did not drop below 50K a month after that for 39 straight months. We sold over 8 million videos. #1seller in the US, Canada, Austrilia, New Zeland, Ireland, Scotland and the UK. Shot 26 National Infomercials, stayed on the aire for 7 years. PGA did not appreciate the fact that the leading instructional series was from an unknown back of the driving range teacher who was not a PGA member. In 2002 I got a phone call one Saturday morning out of the clear blue, Hello, Dalton? Yes Sir. It's Mike Austin just wanted to visit with you a minute, you have time? I was shocked. One I did not know he even knew who I was much less how did you get my cell phone number. A short conversation that lasted just over 3 hours. What a nice man. He told me the reason why he was calling was he did not figure there'd be another teacher the PGA looked down on that other teachers critizied as much as they did himself & just wanted to tell me good job of inspiring golfers. I like what you are saying, keep it up and ignore other teachers and especially the PGA. Really an interesting conversation. We talked a lot on the phone. Very sorry I never got to meet him personally. Dalton
It's interesting that he had a contentious relationship with the PGA. It's so cool that he reached out to you. His very inside to out swing path really let him sling the club into the ball. It just looks amazing. Funny enough is that I've always loved the PGA Tour animated fireball swing logo. Talk about slinging it! It looks so great. I've tried to figure out who they modeled it after but they claim it's no one. How ironic that Mike's swing resembles that more than any other.
Not really enough space in a comment section to elaborate properly...but Mike could swing fast for a variety of reasons. Part of it was in his technique. For example, he leveraged a lot of power from his legs...and he also threw the club from the top of the back swing (sort of like throwing a tether ball around the pole). Another part of it was also that he was just plain strong and fast. He would've had a lot of swing speed with any swing style.
hes got great leg mechanics no doubt, but even so, unless he was playing a course with concrete fairways i doubt hes swinging it 140 mph which is basically the minimum of what it would take to hit it that far downwind with no downhill roll out or anything. i know there were witnesses i guess but its just straight up not believable lmao. basically what theyre saying happened is that he hit a ball approximately 350 yards in the air downwind and got 165 yards of roll out on a flatter fairway and even rolled uphill and over the green. that just sounds like BS lol
It was in a pro tournament so the only way for it to be not true is if all the golfers and witnesses and golf officials I suppose were in on the tale tale. I think not..
I use this method. Got tired of being a high handicapper and getting bad advice. If you notice Mike doesnt use a wide stance. More stability in a shorter stance. When I come back on my golf swing I stop my left hand at the golf ball and let my right swing through. Whip action folks. I can cork a 300 yarder once in awhile and I am 66. Mike was right. Hit a lot more fairways too and the dreaded slice is gone.
@johnOzay597 - There are newspaper article clippings of him shooting in the 60s...although, apparently he wasn't a very good putter. In fact, he bogeyed the par-4 where he hit the 515-yard drive. Phil Reed wrote a book about Austin that's on Amazon if you'd like to read about him.
@watertonrivers - There was a tail wind. I'd have to check the weather records, but I believe there were 25-30 mph winds that day. I've played Desert Rose (Winterwood) and the hole myself. It's basically a flat hole that bends slightly to the right. Don't think there would've been any cart path back in the 70s. I think the cart path today is on the left of the hole and would be out of play of any sort of drive like that.
i looked at a map of the holes on that course and every hole over 500 yards is a slight dog leg left if anything so what hole are you talking about specifically? Lol
Addendum...There was a very tall fence at the end of the range some 250 yards away..must have stood over 80-90 feet high. He would clear it by a lot and watch his balls sail over and onto the par 3 9 hole course on the other side...
Accompanied with his early wrist break, I think it allowed his arms to move in a more easily discernible straight up feeling. Hips breaking a barrel rather than turning within, throwing from the top and other features of Mike’s swing allowed him to swing at 150 mph - Mike’s testimony using stroboscopic equipment. And for all the doubters, (some of you flat earthers by any chance?) Mike’s record (in a sanctioned tournament) is fact. Hundreds of witnesses, pro playing partner Chandler Harper, the course is real though redesigned since, and verified by Guinness. He regularly hit 350+ with his “cruising” speed of around 130 mph and I believe, at least for me, that a major factor is in the use of his hands and wrists. He amended his technique to a “slap-hinge” release around the time of his stroke and I can’t find any videos clearly showing this release. I’ve personally adopted major portions of Mike’s philosophy since 2+ years ago and can attest to effortless, pain-free, and consistent drives that are 30 yards longer. (I’m 65, 7hc, 240 yards now 270... but my hc remains the same. - btw at 25 with 43” steel shafted persimmon, I hit 260~270- 5 hc then.) Jacob Bowden apparently teaches the more Scottish traditional “roll over” release used by Mike in days before his stroke so it’s a proven method. I’m sure Mr. Bowden (and other MA method teachers) can help add giggly distances to most anyone’s swing.
@bossofalltime - Sorry, i don't have any averages. Dan Shauger or Mike Dunaway might know...they both knew him since the 80s and Dan used to caddy for Mike. Bobby Wilson might know too - I think they were in the 350 club together.
@@TT-ph8rp there were witnesses... the ball did not hit a cart path there was no asphalt. It was however very hard summer conditions with a tail wind over 25mph
Did he really hit 515, or did it bounce straight off a big rock and roll down a long hill? Also interesting how high his shoulder is when he addresses the ball at 01:29 .
Sorry not buying it. No possible way unless it was hit off a cliff. 100 reasons why a 515 yard drive is impossible. He simply would not have the power, especially at age 64, 50 years ago with that equipment. He don't even have a fast or hard swing.. He could never generate the clubhead speed to even hit 375 yards. Today's long drive Champs like Jamie sadlowski and Kyle Berkshire and even Bryson dechambeau are only in the high 300s and some rare ones in the low 400yard, and that's with tailwind, a great lucky bounce and hitting on hard surface football fields with great rolls. With drivers that are 460cc, super hot sweet spots and graphite shafts that weigh nothing.. No way this mike austin hit one 515 yards 50 years ago with that equipment. After watching a lot of his videos, no way he even hit one 400 yards. Sorry. I play every day and know how far 515 yards is. It's a mind bending distance.
@@stripervince1 Doesn't matter if you, or I, don't buy it, but there were plenty of witnesses that day, it's an officially recognised record, an official seniors tournament, not some hearsay practice session, and of course there apparently were indeed mitigating circumstances, a 27 - 30 mph tailwind, rock hard fairway and I believe the hole was fairly straight, so obviously shot forward, on landing, at a rate of knots, actually through the green. But Austin had a beautiful swing, no denying that, was always known as a long hitter, and it appears, even at the age of 64, everything aligned perfectly that day, no reason to believe otherwise, it's an official, recognised, record for a reason, no one ever said it flew the entire 515 yards, it probably carried 370 plus, which he was known for, bounced and rolled the rest of the way in the right direction, his putting wasn't the best though, probably bogeyed it 😆
From the book about him, it seems he was stronger than his two neighbors together. Lifted a VW engine block and placed it in the compartment alone. You can't see strength or pain outright, you need to see the results.
Love his no messing style! : 'What was that'?... 'Long'. 'Long?... 'LONG!' Superb golf shots, check out the books that unleash your power potential- Mike Austin style: 'How To Kill The Ball' and '21st Century Golf Swing' by Dan Shauger. These books have given me an extra 50 yards of the tee.
lol its documented with witnesses.... just keep in mind there was a very strong tail wind ive heard from 25-35mph. Even without it the witnesses said it would have carried well over 300. He was averaging over 300 at that age and time in that same tournament.
He did, with a balata ball and persimmon driver. He had a tail wind but his swing was fast. There were a few who could hit it 350 back then. It went 500 because it went over the green and probably rolled down the cart path. Still driving a 450 yard hole back then is crazy.
@harrybasile456 Yeah, it is hard to believe, eh? But it was validated by Guinness World Records and verified by multiple witnesses, including his playing partner Chandler Harper who won the 1950 PGA Champion.
SWINGMAN, I would doubt Mike would be AS FAST with any other swing. At 77 years old (and still going at a driver over 115mph), I would say it has more to do with his swing method. But sure, he would still be FAST with another swing, just not AS fast....or accurate probably!
Wow, he doesn't even take the club that far back...I wonder if he could have hit it 600+ if he took the club as far back as some of these guys do these days =O
I play every day and can drive close to 300 yards. I find it hard to believe even the mechanical golf driving machines could hit that far. Once a golf ball goes 350 yards, you can't even see it barely. . I played last week with a guy who owns two courses and is a sub par player, and a long driver. I mean long, like 360-375 yards. I think it's impossible to hit 500 yards. Even the long drive pros like Joe Miller and Kyle Berkshire with 150 mph clubhead speeds are only (only 😂 😂 hahaha) hitting 380-420 Yards. That's four football fields. That's a incredible distance. I call Bs on a 515 yard drive. I'd have to see it, and still might not believe it.. Since I heard of this Mike Austin 515 yd drive, I've been watching every video on him. He doesn't even swing that hard or fast. Youd need incredible clubhead speed to get anywhere near 400 yards. Also why are there no other videos of him hitting anything remotely close to say 375 yards? Or other reports of monster drives by him over the years. Or a 400 yarder? One day he gets out of bed and hits just one monster 515 yard tee shot, but the rest of his career are just normal 280- 300 yarders, which plenty of golfers can do? Also this allegedly happened in 1974 almost 50 years ago when golf equipment was nothing like it is today. So I don't care who witnessed it, I call bullshit on a 515 yard drive. If Kyle Berkshire can't do that today with mega golf equipment and a almost 150 mph clubhead speed and top of the line golf balls, no way this guy did it. Or Joe Miller with arms like Arnold, can only hit 400 yard. (haha only) punch in "410 yd drive, Kyle berkshire" and watch the difference

he hit it over 400 plenty of times with the same persimmon and no wind, not so hard to believe...he was the greatest ball striker of all time, including hogan, in fact hogan employed him as a swing coach at one stage i believe
I personally don't believe this crap. Wind was only helping at 25 mph. 64 years old, persimmon driver and 515 yds? Come on, those factors don't add up. It probably wasn't even his ball behind the green.
Obviously you never golfed at a high level. Did you ever see a modern golf pros ball roll 70-80 yds on a firm fairway? Now add in the wind. That's probably 120 yds extra distance. Plus the ball rolled across the green
I recently played golf with a gentlemen in his mid 60s and his swing seemed effortless. No wasted motion. High hands. Head relatively steady. Straightening of the rear leg. He is about 5'11 maybe 175 lbs. Not exceptionally athletic looking and he crushed the ball. Long and straight. Averaged 300. Swung very similar to Mike. Setup ,grip, takeaway, hip movement, high follow through. No handle dragging, tension, harpooning, early extension. But his chipping and pitching were suspect stranglely enough. Putting was solid. I guess when you can hit a lot of greens in regulation you don't get to hit that many chips/pitches?
@@pipedown7969 plenty people think it was bullshit.. Maybe bounced on cement 200 yards with a 40 mph tailwind. Oosthuisen hit one 300 that rode a cart path for 200+ yards more. That's the only way this guy hit 500+ yards with that weak swing

Idgaf if they’re were witnesses because how tf would they tell how far a golf ball goes when it’s over 1500 ft away get the fuck out of here this is a camp fire story
El Chialeux Listen, if you look at the top of his swing his shoulders definitely shift forward slightly and for most players that would result in a nasty slice. You might know nothing about golf, but I personally studied at IMG and would guess that I know more about the golf swing than you do. Although I do have a lot of experience in studying the swing, I wouldn't claim to be an "expert" but it doesn't take one to critique this swing in the way I have.

Believe your eyes. Width, plane, weight shift and release. It’s all there
Sorry not buying it.
But Austin had a beautiful swing, no denying that, was always known as a long hitter, and it appears, even at the age of 64, everything aligned perfectly that day, no reason to believe otherwise, it's an official, recognised, record for a reason, no one ever said it flew the entire 515 yards, it probably carried 370 plus, which he was known for, bounced and rolled the rest of the way in the right direction, his putting wasn't the best though, probably bogeyed it 😆
@@stripervince1 😂😂😂 why are you clown
I wonder if a wood based composite head could yield 600 yards distance ?
From the book about him, it seems he was stronger than his two neighbors together. Lifted a VW engine block and placed it in the compartment alone. You can't see strength or pain outright, you need to see the results.
i. try today very help full thank a lot
Oh yes, and he called it.
Love his no messing style! :
'What was that'?...
'Long'.
'Long?...
'LONG!'
Superb golf shots, check out the books that unleash your power potential- Mike Austin style: 'How To Kill The Ball' and '21st Century Golf Swing' by Dan Shauger. These books have given me an extra 50 yards of the tee.
ur killing me mike
There is no way in hell, that guy, at that age, with that swing, hit it that far. No way
lol its documented with witnesses.... just keep in mind there was a very strong tail wind ive heard from 25-35mph.
Still driving a 450 yard hole back then is crazy.
ya i dont believe it either hahahaha, swing looks so funky and not that special lol
@@Sp33dyBeanz oh, are you planning to show off your world records now? Hahahahahah so funny
@@Sp33dyBeanz Can you please show your swing ?
So he literally never mentions anything about the left elbow rotating? That seems very odd to me
Swings on the same plane as his back swing
@Perfect Sense
Perfect Non Sense
LMAO @ "how was that?"......."long"
Mike wasn't related to Steve by any chance? 😜
@harrybasile456 Yeah, it is hard to believe, eh? But it was validated by Guinness World Records and verified by multiple witnesses, including his playing partner Chandler Harper who won the 1950 PGA Champion.
SWINGMAN,
I would doubt Mike would be AS FAST with any other swing. At 77 years old (and still going at a driver over 115mph), I would say it has more to do with his swing method. But sure, he would still be FAST with another swing, just not AS fast....or accurate probably!
I’m not saying this wasn’t true and Mike undoubtedly has a nice swing capable of some serious distance but I’m telling you all this was a fluke !
Not a fluke.Fairways firm.Strong tail wind. Probably carried 360-370 rest was wind roll bounce.
His swing looks like Jack's swing!!
you madman i bet you hit it 500+ too :)
Imagine him hitting with todays clubs and balls? Jesus.
Wow, he doesn't even take the club that far back...I wonder if he could have hit it 600+ if he took the club as far back as some of these guys do these days =O
Dtyler171 I swing at 60%-70% and average 250+ yard drives
No it would throw off the exquisite timing and coordination.
(haha only) punch in "410 yd drive, Kyle berkshire" and watch the difference
so you can drive a golf ball 300 yards, who cares. I guess you never heard of the female golfer that can hit the ball 400 yards (Troy Mullins).
@@sanansa4567 apparently not genius. Ever play golf? Of course not. Another clueless troll. With two subscribers and zero content on his channel. Go away fool. Prob not even a person. A bot
@@sanansa4567 no i havent, and who cares. No girl hits 400 yards. Kyle Berkshire is only hitting 380 -400. With 150 mph clubhead speed. No girl is besting that .
he hit it over 400 plenty of times with the same persimmon and no wind, not so hard to believe...he was the greatest ball striker of all time, including hogan, in fact hogan employed him as a swing coach at one stage i believe
youre an absolute idiot if you believe this nonsense, but seeing as how trump won this election, it makes sense
He was great
The greatest ball striker of all time? You ain't seen Jamie sadlowskis, or Joe Miller or Kyle berkshire
Happy gilmore only drove a fucking ball 450 yards in that movie. Tell me im lying?
What about Jimmy Bruen? he'd have had auld Mike in his pocket.
Habloirlandes .. don’t think so
I personally watched Mike A. drive a 610 yard hole in 1 shot, now it was on an airport runway but who cares!
Mike trout and happy Gilmore could prove him wrong
Jack Nicklaus, won with that swing.
Absolutely
I'm sorry a 64 year old man who's using 1970 club technology holds the record for longest drive ever? Fake news.
witnesses bro what you "think" is irrelevant
Really? You can not be that idiotic?
@@pipedown7969 plenty people think it was bullshit.. Maybe bounced on cement 200 yards with a 40 mph tailwind. Oosthuisen hit one 300 that rode a cart path for 200+ yards more. That's the only way this guy hit 500+ yards with that weak swing
@@stripervince1 you have no clue what you are talking about. are you going to keep ignoring the part where there were witnesses? as far as "weak" swing you could not be more wrong. ever heard of mike dunaway? he was his protégé and used this swing and was an absolute monster go look him up. He was the original Iron Byron before the machine existed and tested clubs for callaway. Austin was doing seminars well in to his 70s hitting 1 iron off the deck dead straight over 200 like its nothing. the swing is far from "weak". not to mention i think he was like 6'5" with a very athletic build. this can make a massive difference look at tony finau.... dude takes a half backswing and can crush it 340+... imagine if he had a 40mph wind behind him and tried to really go after one as fast as he possibly could.
I hope he knew Jesus heaven is a real place he’ll is a real place come to Jesus for all have sinned and come short of the glory of God for whosoever shall calm ion. The name of The Lord shall be saved come to Jesus today don’t delay Jesus is calling
Real Happy Gilmore
More Steve Austin than Mike Austin
On - N - 2. Not Rocket Science. Just A Philosophy.
David E Riley
That's it? I have very little experience and I swing like that naturally. Not the distance per say, but the stance.
yes and Hogan swung with the floor body and used his lower body to bring the club to the ball
This man was a swindler.
Cap
How many cart paths did he hit to drive it 515yds? Total BS!!!
It was the 70s I dont think the course had cart paths... It was just hard summer conditions. It was in a tournament, there are tons of witnesses and his playing partner from that day confirmed as he was the one to pace it off past the green. He said "i even took extra long steps"
No glove either.
Nicholas had a more upright swing like Arnold Palmer but none of them came over the top.
Who the hell is Nicholas????? I heard of Palmer but not Nicholas. Do you mean Nicklaus?????
No he means me Nicholas. I hit over 450 yds. Oh two shots
i do not believe this 500 yard nonsense
Don't have to, his non 500 yard figures are good enough
@@kvishal001 lol true
Believe it! Did you ever hit a PW with the wind that went 50 yds more than your normal.distance?
Perhaps watch one of his disciples Mike Dunaway drive a green repeatedly 350 yrs away!
Idgaf if they’re were witnesses because how tf would they tell how far a golf ball goes when it’s over 1500 ft away get the fuck out of here this is a camp fire story
Very unlikely this ever happened
I really don't like the swing at all. Definitely comes over the top.
Perfect Sense Another web expert... Mike Austin over the top? Not sure if I should laugh or cry for you that you think that.
Perfect Sense Not over the top, at all. Not even a little bit.
414pwz Then you don't know a golf swing. If you can't see the forward push off the shoulder especially in the older years then you're blind or just not very observant. It's not every swing but some of them for sure.
You're right about one thing. Someone here doesn't know the golf swing.
What a load of rubbish. The ball must have hit a cement path and bounced 250 yards
Lots of golfers don't belive this bs. Think wat you want. I don't believe it. He probably hit it 275 carry and the wind roll bounce got him the rest
But even When he turned 70 he averaged 305-310 in recorded tournaments so what are you talking about
He is copying Arnold palmers moves on his swings and that club has a super easy to swing with if he wants he can try to hit a Nike covert or whatever he wants to of today’s world! Let’s see what he can do!! W tit
1) Mike Austin has been passed away for many years
2) Mike was teaching golf before Arnold Palmer had graduated grade school
I believe from what from what videos of Mike Austin there on youtube he didn't like palmers swing . Not staying on plane at end .
Shit!!!!
No way does that golf swing produce what would be an 750 yard drive with today's technology... sorry
Another doubter. Watch his swing. Listen to his explanations. He is a very strong individual with long levers and a very flexible spine.
That's impossible eh
yes and Hogan swung with the floor body and used his lower body to bring the club to the ball
