Fabergé eggs: Jewels of the Russian crown

  • In the era of the Russian tsars, Peter Carl Fabergé's jewel-studded objets d'art were a royal riff on a much humbler Easter tradition of ordinary folk giving each other colored hens' eggs. Correspondent Elizabeth Palmer reports on the lore of Fabergé eggs, from opulent originals to sparkling counterfeits.

    Have you heard of the guy who bought one at the fleamarket or yardsale? True story! He was going to sell it for the gold, and by chance decided to look up the name (mark) on the bottom to learn it was one of the missing Easter eggs. I beleive he received $34 million for it.

    I started collecting a bit for fun after seeing some Russian Enamel on Antiques Roadshow. I have learned a lot in the past 24 years, but I met someone about 20 years ago who was a real expert. He explained how sophisticated the trade in fake eggs is and how even he couldn't tell the difference with some of the ones who were made by modern masters. It's not surprising that the museum in St. Petersburg was fooled. I'm pretty sure that Sothebys and Christies have auctioned fakes as well.

    I’m pretty sure Joan Rivers owned & had quite the collection of Faberge eggs too? I don’t know if her daughter sold them or kept them after she died? I know a lot of Joan’s jewelry line was inspired by Faberge eggs.

    • @henrylivingstone2971
      @henrylivingstone2971 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, Joan rivers never owned a faberge egg. She had a lot of faberge made items. Faberge made a lot of assorted items like frames, letter knives, hard stone figurines, and bowls etc. bit long story short, Joan while having owned many great pieces by faberge never owned an egg.

  • @plywoodcarjohnson5412

    Weirdly, the true value has to be in the craftsmanship. Or at least 55%. The history behind them must be 25%. The materials would then be 20%. So if you and your co workers are insanely skilled, and can afford the materials you can get close. The investment in the materials alone is really quite interesting. It can't be that much. How much is 75 grams of gold and five tiny diamonds? I mean, there is more, but that must be the foundation, right?

The MET has three, there’s three in the royal collection, there’s some in LA, in the Walters art museum, nine in the kremlin armory and six or nine in the faberge museum in Moscow and two in the faberge Museum in Baden Baden Germany.

      Faberge by the time he’s was discovered by Alexander iii was already a well known jeweler and didn’t make most of his wares he used an army of craftsman that he supervised. In fact anything that left his workshops would be subject to his keen eye and if he didn’t like something or it was decidedly low quality he was known to smash it with a hammer and tell the craftsman to do it again.
      Supervision is common practice for master craftsmen. And for the most part the design of the Easter eggs were done by faberge along with his master craftsmen.
