Hiking Whitaker Peak: Sierra Pelona Mountains (Angeles National Forest), CA.
Careful planning during cool weather directed me to Whitaker Peak. The shade free hike was more manageable in the cool weather. It is essentially a long walk on a dirt road, but since there were two summits to reach along the way, it gives just enough of a draw to keep things interesting. In just under 5 miles, the road ends at Whitaker Lookout. On the way back, an off trail bushwhack leads to Whitaker Peak. Putting in the extra effort to reach the summit makes the entire hike worthwhile.
