  • Did you know that the government can take your car, house, business, or other property on the mere suspicion that it's connected to criminal activity and without ever convicting or even charging you with a crime? In this stunning talk, Dick M. Carpenter II, explains how everyday people like you & me can fall prey to "policing for profit," also known as civil forfeiture. Dick Carpenter is a professor at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs, and Director of Strategic Research at the Institute for Justice, where he has published on a variety of topics ranging from educational policy to the dynamics of presidential elections. His articles, reports, and book chapters have been cited in White House reports and by the United States Supreme Court. Previously, he worked as a school teacher and principal. As a classically trained percussionist, he performs regularly in Colorado. He has flown private planes for 20+ years. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

To bad this video has so few views. EVERYONE in the USA and Canada needs to watch this!
I was on my way to buy a used truck for $20,000.00 and the cops seized it. That was 12 years ago. 7 Attorneys told me it would cost $16,000.00 to get it back and the DA said I could get JAIL time, FOR WHAT? Total intimidation tactics. I am STILL SO pissed!!! NEVER-EVER trust a COPS with your personal information!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is a crime. Without "meeting of the minds" which no inanimate object could participate in , no "contract" can be established therefore the basis for this law is null and void. Its nonsense and no honor loving Judge would tolerate that b.s. in their courts.

And thankfully, we now have Timbs v. Indiana to assert our 8th Amendment rights on the state level.

Policing For Profit is a common characteristic of many municipals. This practice is implemented using traffic laws and local code. The side effect of Policing For Profit has more negative impacts on American citizens.

Given that cops murder and engage in violent sadism under color of law, theft is small time for the criminals in blue.

And this is why some people never own anything. They always lease or rent. They can't seize someone else's property, such as a rental car or a car under finance. Well, they could, but they don't want to face the corporate lawyers. It's been a big scam for decades now.

Raymond Zehrung exactly. or some people are smart. they work hard but they open up and put money into accounts in places like the cayman islands or something like that. they will be living in an apartment all their lives in the US. paying rent all their lives. up until age 65 they will probably be leasing a car which means again you rent and sign a lease for a car for 3 years and then when that expires, you sign a lease again if you like the same car, otherwise you sign a new lease for another car, and when they retire, they will have alot of money to do whatever they want. travel, write a book whatever. or if they are smart, have some money, they might buy some investment properties in different island countries, like trinidad, tobago, martinique, jamaica, bermuda, carribean islands, fix them up and make some money out of those as people love to go to such places as vacation spots for honeymoons, wedding anniversaries, cruises, they can offer special package deals and make money.

What if you purchased a vehicle but are making monthly payments on it for years to come? I would think this would fall under the same category. I get it the cops don't want to seize a vehicle with payments or a lease as they can't make money on it.

End policing for profit now, it's a immoral greedy crime by immoral and greedy people acting through law enforcement departments around the country, in the name of public service. Holding police AND district attorneys accountable in your town is a place to start. Watch out in Leesville ,La is my advice.

This sounds crazy and bothers me, but I'm sure there are some necessary uses for this. It's sad someone in law enforcement doesn't come along in cases like he mentioned and say this is not the correct use of this. I still support law enforcement and feel the vast majority of them are out there trying to do the right thing and risking their lives while they protect and serve us.

This is why the Constitution was wriiten the way it is. We went through this same b.s. with England and now we have these highly intelligent people playing like these laws just and to the "9". They are not and are an afront to the Law and to its Citizens.

Policing for profit has grown more than ever over the course of the last three years. There are more private police than ever, who solely rely on profit from civil forfeiture to ensure that officers earn their paycheck.
This even includes towing cars, if they are suspected of using their car for a crime. Isn't that a load of bull?

The time has come for a militia to protect the public from the American Injustice System. This militia needs to re-occupy stolen homes and re-possess the property of government officials involved in civil forfeiture. Ultimately these officials need to go to jail.

How come it's called civil forfeiture if the property is charged with a crime ? Does the property have due process ? Is there a trial to convict the property ? Seems like semantics , not substance .
