I’m an immigrant, my first job here in the US was as a retail salesperson. My friend told me about becoming a QA. Started learning on my own and then through talking to other people got to know about a bootcamp. Took part in a 5 week boot camp to become a Manual QA. Improved my life very quickly. The beginning was scary but it has boosted my confidence greatly.

I am a college graduated and luckily I went to a community college that's cheap. Only 6k in student loan after financial aids. Do bootcamp if you aren't going to do scientific research or wanting to become a professor. College teach you theoretical knowledge not practical skills like bootcamps does. I only recommend going to big colleges because they can help you get internships which equates to experiences. A piece of advice is to not graduate too fast if you have not found any internship yet since most internships only allow college students to apply . If you a graduated already then you cannot apply to those internships. My degree didn't help me land jobs after college, but my work experience as an IT tech at my college does. A lot of my college classmates still haven't land a job yet after 1 year of job search. That goes to show that experience and skills are way more important than a degree. College degree just simply help you to be more competitive during the hiring process for a job.

@@techisthenewblack The pleasure is all mine. Personally, I would be interested in hearing more from people who jumped careers later in life into tech (Ppl 35+ like myself). You constantly hear about people getting into tech right out of college/Uni, but what about someone who made the leap later in life? That's what I'm trying to do and I think a lot of people are either 1) scared, 2) unsure of what to do, and 3) believe it's too late. Thoughts?

Tech sales can indeed offer exciting opportunities! If you're interested, exploring the field and gaining relevant skills could be a great start. I recommend CourseCareers it's self paced. Most finish it in 1 month. They offer tech sales, UX/UI tech recruiting & customer success roles which the avg entry salary of $65k - $95k. They are partnered with tech companies, so they’re able to help you get interviews with companies looking to hire their graduates.
They also have paid internships (up to $21/hr) while you wait to get hired on. They only offer courses for people in Canada & USA.
