      that is bullshit. and even if Ian Mackaye had that much money, he's literally operated his businesses in the least exploitive way - so good for him. Plus I would imagine Henry Rollins has more money than Ian Mackaye, he does spoken word tours pretty often, acts, etc. Also, fuck off, your last sentence has nothing to do with anything

    I am an adult punker that grew up listening to Fugazi. I am 35 now, i was a little too young to know Minor Threat in the 80s. My wife is a vegetarian. I never paid much attention to my health until i met my wife. I use to think i wasn't eating so bad but compared to what i eat today, thanks to my wife's guidance, it's totally different. I'm still not a vegetarian but i sure as hell eat ALOT more fruits and vegetables then i used to !

    Yes. It is convenience. People are set in their habits and not going to go out of their ways to change when it doesn't present "immediate" danger in their life. Plus some selfishness.

    • @jekylwhispy
      @jekylwhispy 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Mayan Ruins actually, plants take longer to digest in your body. A little bit of energy is taken out over time as opposed to meat which is metabolized very quickly. Although we are omnivores, the length of our digestive tract is closer to that of an herbivore than a carnivore. What you say about staying full, that's one of several places here where you are completely wrong. Instead of getting so defensive about your CHOICE to consume animals, maybe educate yourself first. Please.

    • @jekylwhispy

    I'm not a vegan but I found all his points good and undebatable. If someone asked me why was I not a vegan, I'd probably just say that I like the taste of meat. But really, as Ian made me rethink it, it's just the convinience. Cheap meat products is just what I am mostly forced(?) to consume because I am not a very wealthy person. All of my foods contain the same cheap pork and beef mixture that's much cheaper. Vegetarianism has become such a joke for its fundamentalistic supporters, but he seems like a smart man.

    I take loads of inspiration from the straight edge scene. I'm not alone in this, I know that now but my 20s were full of imagination, rage, hurt and rebellion that was the legacy of my teenage rebellion. All this involved straight edge related things. The environment I grew up in never accepted me as a person: The antithetical side didn't want me because I never got into sex, drugs and alcohol, the sober people didn't want me because I was not Catholic, Conservative or Redneck. I was also a goth, still am lol, which outcasted me for many years and fueled a lot of my behaviours that persisted well into my adult life.
    I've found ways to cope and find friends and family who accept me for who I was and how I currently am but that's taken my whole life story to accomplish and be experienced in. Straight Edge stuff has been a major outlet for me for the longest time. It allowed me some peace of mind from the mainly troubled world I experienced growing up. I eat meat but I don't drink, smoke or do drugs and never get into _getting laid_ or other sexual crazies like many others do. This is all personal to me though and has nothing to do with the bulk of my politics.

    Drugs or alcohol is a painkiller for some teenagers and adults.
    Some of us did not have the best of circumstances growing up - for example; some people who hurt themselves or kill themself are typically in so much emotional pain they can't stand it. I wanted to end my life, forcing I called the crisis hotline and I was put on path of Rehabilitation.... healing my wounds and getting therapy.
    I needed the buzz to help me kill the pain so I didn't kill myself first

  • @ShanesSquirrelShack
    @ShanesSquirrelShack 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    I am the same way with Straight Edge, however, I am a meat eater and live on a farm. I have seen animals butchered and have partaken in animal butchering, mainly chickens. It was hard to grasp the concept at first but the way the animals were butchered was quick and painless. Coming from a background with knowledge of chickens, some breeds are meant for butcher and meat and if they aren't butchered, they can die by heart attacks or broken joints just by how big they get so sometimes it's best if it is done that way. They were also free ranged for their lives as well. Anyways, I do not judge anyone who is a vegetarian at all or someone who drinks. Being a college student, being straight edge is rather tough because people think that I'm not cool then by not drinking. But by all means, if you want a beer or whatever, have one, but don't be an idiot or be obnoxious, or drive drunk. Just have common sense. Great words Ian!

    • @bigscreenbird8198
      @bigscreenbird8198 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh so just cuz you've seen chickens be murdered and tortured that makes it ok? Would it be ok to murder you, just as long as it was quick and painless? Your logic is unfounded and lacks substance. Educate yourself more on what the meat dairy and egg industries are doing to the planet and to human health. Earthlings and cowspiracy... After you watch those documentaries then you might have true compassion and understanding. I swear to you I'm not a troll and not saying this to be an asshole or something. I'm challenging you, and anyone else who reads this, to delve deep into the systematic rape, torture and murder of billions of sentient beings per year. Thank you and have a great day

    • @ShanesSquirrelShack
      @ShanesSquirrelShack 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +bigscreen bird first off is that what we do is not torture. At least how I raise them. I do understand that several industrial farms treat their animals extremely poorly. However, the last time I checked they have plenty of land to roam. Plenty of food to eat and water to drink and when it comes time for processing, it is a very simple systematic approach that is done with in seconds. If we were to not eat animals in general, the earth would be over populated. And for the human comment, yes it is different killing off a human. Humans have skills that are used to solve everyday problems in everyday lives. Animals, especially a bird with a brain the size of a pea, does not possess that trait. That's all I have to say about that and you have a great day as well.

    the difference between our ancestors and modern humanity is that our ancestors had to hunt for their food. They had to earn the meals they wanted. Now, there exists alternatives which are healthier for modern lifestyles of people like you who sit on a chair behind a computer all day, not really exerting much energy into a fulfilling life. That's why vegetarianism works, because it is healthier for modern trends.

    Agreed, though, at least speaking for myself, I'll say that the vegetarian lifestyle choice goes beyond what's healthy for the self and considers other living beings and (pardon if it sounds messianic or grandiose) the Earth at large. Large scale animal agriculture is a major ethical and environmental concern for many of us.

      But if meat is produced in a sustainable, organic, and small-scale manner, there turn out to be zero problems whatsoever. For all of human history we've been eating grass-fed organic beef, for example. The problem is not with the beef. The problem is with the feed lots - the cows are kept in tight quarters, they can't eat grass so they get fed GMO grains, which gives them health issues, so they get injected with drugs and hormones... it's disgusting. But eating meat that was raised normally and humanely is great, and I would even say necessary for mental and physical health. I eat meat, but I will only eat it if it is clean - grass-fed, wild caught, organic, free-range, etc. The problems with the meat industry today are enormous, and people see that, and react against it by going vegetarian, but they don't understand the issue, I think. There were no feed-lots and synthetic rBGH and so on 1000 years ago, and there was little to no obesity, heart disease, autism, cancer, depression, OCD, etc. The problem is the drugs and the abuse of the animals, and when you remove these two things, there is nothing wrong with eating meat at all. Unless you think that killing a cow to eat it is wrong, in which case, that's a whole separate issue.

    • @jekylwhispy
      @jekylwhispy 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends. My sister doesn't eat meat cuz the pain to the animals. A dear friend cannot eat pork because once her dad pulled over so she could pee on the side of the road as a little girl and it was near a pig slaughterhouse and she said they sounded like human screams. Regardless of your personal reasons or what you think the reasons SHOULD be, people have all sorts of different reasons for not eating meat

I agree with Mckaye on countless issues but veganism which he chooses and is free to do so. However, I do believe the choice itself is one that could only be given by convenience and not the other way around. Abundance and choice of goods in the modern world afford you the luxury to be vegan as most cultures prove and the antithetical movement to be anti-meat only stems from prosperous societies.

    Being a vegetarian isn't too difficult. Not eating meat isn't a matter of "not being able to give it up" so much as, do you genuinely want to give it up. I've done it before for a while. It's doable, despite sometimes getting questioned about it.
    Meat tastes good, we all know it does. And so we've got to simply decide between hedonism or some sense of taking care of animals more. But all these morals are so relative, so subjective, we decide to just keep eating meat. Simple.

The amount of interesting and tasty plants at our disposal is astounding. I can look any animal in the eye now, with the assertion of being a genuine friend. My life is better now, and that includes the life of others. I'm an ageing Punk/Mod/Skinhead thing, and I still don't fit in, but in nature I now have my place: as a friend. I no longer contribute to the suffering of the voiceless, and just little old me has made a difference in the world for that. Meat Is Murder.

    Honestly - as a meat eater and hunter - and lover of Ian as a DC native and punk - The real answer is vegetarian + insect protein. The meat industry is gross, and it's the main reason I hunt for myself. You can get more viable animal protein per sq yard from crickets than pigs. By a WIDE margin. Humans are omnivarous, and require certain amino acids and vitamins (I know he made a joke about this) its more efficient to get them direct than from supplements - which who knows their providence.

    One reason you shouldn’t be a vegetarian: meat is unparalleled source of protein that your body needs to sustain itself throughout the longevity of your life. You’re weaker without it, no doubt. Also his claim about poisoning yourself and not being present as a result of drinking alcohol is absolutely false. Beer and wine specifically are packed with b vitamins and collagen. These vitamins are great for your heart, red blood cells, skin, and hair. The problem is a lack of balance particularly in western society because diet has been used as a weapon against the people. However, abstaining completely from these things does not make you healthier. You need to be aware of what type of animal and alcohol products you’re consuming, but these foods have millenniums of human sustenance attached to them.

    @Pilaf1984 you're right about factory farming but why not mention the effects it has on people? you can say we have a choice not to eat it but for some of us we don't. unfortunately in this country people have to feed their kids what they can afford to. and most people aren't aware of the conditions their meat is under before it gets to them, or before its even slaughtered. if more people knew about that stuff more people would probably make vegetarian choices.
