What they DIDN'T know was the concerted effort to stop heavy water production and the lack of emphasis by Nazi leadership. By the time the Nazis were defeated, it became ovbvious Germany was many years away from developing its own atomic weapons. Only the combined inegnuity of refugee German scientists in collaboration with British, Canadian and US scientists and engineers and the immense financial resources of the US government brought the atomic bomb project to completion.
