We lay by another store of chopped firewood for next year, and hike down to the cottage with fodder for the pet sheep. Scott starts to the lime mortaring process.

People don’t understand how hard it is to film all of the things that you do. You don’t have a “production” team or editing crew. You are doing a fantastic job with what you have. ❤
As an ex logger, always sned the top side limbs of a tree first, because if it rolls, it won't roll on top of you. What tends to happen is that the tree gradually begins to settle lower and lower to the ground as you cut away each top side branch. Those top side branches that are touching the ground are also the one's under the greatest pressure, and will always try to make the tree roll "downhill". Hope this helps when you come to process the whole tree. stay safe.
My parents and grandparents always said that wood heat is the super fuel...it heats you twice. Once when you gather it and once when you burn it. I so enjoy watching your little slice of heaven.

Hi guys, I have much experience working in the woods and as a builder. Cedar is usless as firewood, but makes excelent lumber and split rails. That log cannot roll as long as it's attatched to the root ball. Take good care and good luck!
I am confused in that I thought that there was no cedar in Scotland. Do you know the genus?
Warning not to cut branches beneath such a huge tree is a bit of potentially life-saving advice for those not accustomed to processing felled trees. Thank you, Scott, for taking the risk of stating the obvious and going for what is in your viewers' best interest. My grandfather back in the late 50's when I was a child, used to sing to me: Daisy, Daisy, give me your answer do, I am half crazy over the love of you...let's hope this was his message to you!
On A Bicycle Built For Two
I spent a lot of time as a child with my grandparents. My grandfather carried calluses on his hands all the time from working outside. Chopping wood with an ax was a regular job. He never complained because the heat was a way of showing his love for us. He had a system to everything he done. Not only did we use wood, we used coal which had to be broken into smaller pieces. We used oil and electricity as well. We lived in the country along the Appalachian Mountains.❤ I always learned lessons from grandpa. One summer he taught me about the study of insects as he broke a sweat from chopping wood. He said, "there are 5 different flies boo, shoe fly, horse fly, camel fly, house fly and the green fly." All are aggravating especially while working." There's nothing more intimidating than finding a fly in the parlor" said one of his friends years ago. So you are so lucky!! No flies.😉😉😉. I know about back and hip pain..sometimes you get that pain just rolling your eyes the wrong way. Love your hat.😊 Please take care. Stay safe and blessed🕊🙏🕊.

Fun fact: Ferns and bracken are slightly different from each other. Bracken has one single stem and ferns have several stems coming out of the crown.

Your stove looks great!
The stove looks amazing! You two have already made a positive difference there. I'm pretty sure you can lift those tiles, re-set them level, and after grouting you can seal them with a semigloss finish. That would be much less expensive than purchasing new. I love watching what you're up to and always come away smiling.
It wares off after a while
I live on a Scottish island and if I was a little bit closer I would mill that tree for you, I have an Alaskan chainsaw mill and big chainsaw, it does a pretty decent job but you loose a wee bit more wood with the big kerf it takes compared to a band saw. Please consider some chainsaw PPE when using it, have seen some nasty accidents.

Kate is right the auld folks managed to cut and mill the wood without many tools. I do understand the logistics of getting equipment and supplies from the mainland, but I think that you need to sit doon plan your jobs and the materials you need before you start. Otherwise, it is frustrating because of the delays. But a guid job taks time.
Take care of that back lad it can be a very serious problem as ye age. I speak from experience!
My dad used a mallet and froe to split shakes and posts from cedar logs.
Your comment about remembering to not cut the supporting branches, it was not stupid to mention that. It is a very good point and something to always be mindful of. I am glad for the reminder! Also, did your "Mushroom" album covers ever dry out enough to save?
Your cleaning the stove put me in mind of blacking the range when I was a lot younger--I even remembered the smell!

Take your time. Renovation and maintenance is a lot of money. We have been busy at our house down at the south coast (South Africa) for 5 years already! And only basic, simple stuff but necessary ... no fancy cosmetic changes. No money for this. We can see how much you guys have done already and you have so many chores every day ❤
You could divert some spare cash towards a powered/battery wheelbarrow. Or, fork out a more modest fee for a robust 4 wheel cart. Or for a heavy duty, raised handle push wheel barrow to conserve your back. Of course, I say 'spare cash' light-heartedly! Also, I don't think it's quite fair to expect Brie and Crowdie to share their hay. Clearly, they need one bale apiece. Where I live, on the Isle of Wight, the poor sheep are marched into a field where the cauliflower has been harvested and told to stay there until they've eaten every last vestige of vegetation. Their mournful bleating is heart wrenching. All across the Island can be seen fields of stoic sheep steadily munching in the hope of being allowed near grass again. I love your videos, btw, and, like my local sheep, am stoic but in my case it's in the face of adverts, not cauliflower stumps. Thank you, x

Would be amazing to get the cedar milled into planks. Flooring, furniture, etc. such beautiful wood.
Graphite based stove polish is my preference for making cast iron stoves shine.

There's a paiste I used to use on the wood burner called Stove Black really works well never need to use spray paint just remember to youse rubber gloves , really hard to get off hands you apply it with a wet rag . You will like the product.
Used this Stove Black for years on my Grannys' stove on which she cooked, baked and heated the house. Comes up a treat and preserves the iron. Mind you, your hands get the same black colour. You could aye wear rubber gloves.

Cutting branches off a deadfall tree: if it's come to rest on a slope, always try cut from above...never cut from below!

We heat our place with wood, burn about 3 full cords a year. I absolutely love our wood stove, true heart of the home. It is a lot of work, and makes a mess, but no matter… we love it. During the ice storm of 1998, in Ontario, in January, we survived 11 days without hydro and no generator. I had at the time an old Findlay cook stove with a hot water tank. Kept us warm and allowed us to cook and bake. We lived beside a lake so we could get water to flush toilets.
Bracken is the uk,s most common fern ( apparently 😁) so you’re both right , but keep on with your banter it’s great , 😊 found your chat at the end very amusing .

I think one side of the steps to the house where Scott was pushing the wheel barrow you could perhaps make a cemented path instead of the steps. So have one side with steps and the other a cemented path for the wheel barrow. The stove looks beautiful. I am glad your internet has been sorted out for now.

Scott, never feel badly about stating the obvious when it comes to safety. You are obviously an intelligent man with some experience in taking limbs off fallen tree. Not everyone is. Katie, the stove looks great with the new coat of paint - the trick with masking tape is to fold over a tiny bit of the end, so you can easliy pull it up. You lose the 1/8", but it saves a lot of time and frustration. The ceiling project is coming along fantastically. Nothing like a lengthy indoor project to make the winter go by faster!
Just come across your channel...something that really resonates with our experience (which we try to minimise, perhaps wrongly) is just how physically demanding our lifestyles are.

I can appreciate your frustration with the remoteness - lived on an island in New Guinea for several years - everything takes forever - we called it PNG-Time. I imagine Hebridean life is a beautiful idea until you need something major done. Then the remoteness is a logistical conundrum. Could it not be possible to find a local mobile miller that might come by boat and setup a mill next to the tree and process it into planks for you? There's quite a few little companies offering their service to your area. Also, the shingles can be easily made from short chainsawed rounds cleft with a broad head axe and mallet. Cedar splits pretty straight for the most part and is a very easy wood to split. Loved the video. Gonna go and watch from the start and binge Hebridean life. Have always wanted to live there. Bracken fern is used in the Caucuses for food preservation. I don't know a lot about it, but I keep seeing it in village life vlogs, where they store things like apples or chestnuts in a big pile of dried bracken, it seems to keep rodents away.
Is that downed tree a western red cedar? It sure looks like one, but maybe it's a different cedar. I knew a fellow who made cedar shakes by hand by splitting pieces off of old cedar stumps, he was making them to roof an out building.

It is interesting how the need for finance is always a potential barrier. No matter what you want or need to do in life, money is always at the back of things! Splitting the cedar sounds like a mission, but it could make for some interesting objects in the future. You made a great job of the stove! How are the cats getting on? I really feel the longer you are on the island the more a natural rhythm and rotation of tasks will happen. You have done a lot since July. It may not feel like it, but you have! Patience is never easy.

You can always use a chain saw to mill wood. You don’t need a milling machine. TH-cam milling with chainsaw.

Katie "just wants to sing..." (like Herbert, the son of the king who built the castle that fell over and sank into the bog; clever M Python!)
Some of those larger branches will make ad hoc fence posts. Just strip the bark and let 'em sit in the sun/wind for a few weeks; should be strong enough for garden/sheep fencing. Cedar makes poor firewood, it'll do in a pinch, but the birch, oak or ash are much better.
That big snag on the left (10:30 mark) will make a great habitat tree for bird and critter watching.
"Unscathed" now that's a great word not much in use nowadays!
A "Froe" is a shingle splitting tool, but wide boards could be split using a selection of wedges and a maul, (as Katie noted).

We in Nova Scotia use a lot of wood. It does need to be stacked properly to dry though. We spend an enormous amount of time managing wood. Each piece is handled many, many times.

Bracken is a fern, it's in the US also, it is toxic to animals. Even here in rural north Florida people have to get Starlink. In your situation it's essential. Your views and vistas are stunning. Best of luck.

The fire place looks great! I have used stove black on mine in the past to keep it nice. Things are moving along with the ceiling too. I hope you find a way of splitting and using the cedar in the house, would be truly gorgeous to have it there.

Love your positive attitudes that there is plenty of firewood, apart from the cedar but the girls enjoy the foliage, and I am sure you will find a use for the timber. We have Starlink, you definitely DO NOT need a business account, far from it. Home use, 300mbps is more than enough for you guys, editing, uploading or whatever. I'm IT engineer and know what I'm talking about here, for a rural location incl business uploading\downloading you fo not require a 1Gb connection, thats greedy and you'll save a ton of money. £500 quid for hardware, £75 a month and look out for Starlink deals that they do for £99 for the HW. £2.5K is ridiculous for you guys, that's for sea going liners, oil rigs, Ukraine mil and so forth ;-)
It's ridiculously expensive for the priority package, we agree. The sea-going liner packages are even more, like five times the amount they quote us!!

Hi there all the way from a cold Aberdeen. I have the same boiler stove ,as your wood is not as dry as it perhaps should be 20% moisture or less your glass gets a mess . I find that an easy way to clean it is a damp cloth dipped in the ash in the tray will clean it no problem. I run my house completely on wood and have since 2006 so I have a wee bit of experience with wood. It is a lot of work but very therapeutic and also saves me money on a gym membership. It’s a pity you’re not a bit closer as I also use a bandsaw mill which I really like and cut all my wood requirements for making wood stores and outbuildings. Living with wood requires total organisation .The area you live in is beautiful but hard and I admire you both for your determination. Good luck with the projects .

as a fellow back ache sufferer, I’ve found resting with a hot pack laying flat with knees up at 90° supported by pillows or something, is a great relief. Also a cheeky glass of red wine is a good muscle relaxer 😉 prep natural remedy that is! Then once the pain has eased, I do lots of core-strength physiotherapy exercises. And if doing any repetitive or heavy lifting, always bend at the knees, never at the hips.
That is one ancient tree! Take care always look forward to your videos!

You can purchase an Alaskan chain saw mill. They are portable units that are able to be hiked into remote areas to cut up trees into lumber. You decide the size of the lumber when finished. That milled lumber is rough but can be hiked out if need be.😊

I heard the birdsong again, it is embedded in the harp music. I think what you call Cedar is actually Cypress (Chamaecyparis lawsonia), or at least the tree that blew over in storm Isha looks more like one.
Cypress grows in the UK but it is not natural to the country. That tree from its' size and shape is a cedar.

It’s a work in progress when the weather is good get out on that island when the weather is poor do other stuff I’ve found since moving to Scotland 🏴 I’ve no concept of time at all but my health is better and my whole way of life is too I do envy you both 😊xx
I love watching your videos. You are both brilliant and I love the scenery. One thing concerns me and that is the lack of a non-combustible surface behind your wood stove. Brick, steel, stone, or even tiles would prevent your wall from overheating.

Love your channel have been following since the beginning , I watch to relax and destress , and was sorry to see what you have started to use fast speed , instead of just cutting to the end of the job at hand , it unfortunately presses my stress and heart rate starts to race , so hope this is a one off as your slow realtime speed and lovely music was what made you so different from some of the other channels , normally I would set it to plat in 0,25 speed but then I will miss the lovely music .
