    I love that "The Death of the Moon" effectively pre-empted both that Far Side cartoon with the T. rex eating a flying saucer, & that "Scary Door" episode of Futurama. "in the end, it was not the guns or the bombs that defeated the aliens, but the humblest of earth's creatures - the Tyrannosaurus rex"
    There are tons of these weird tales out there. A. Merritt's "The Moon Pool" is a favourite, & F. Van Wyck Mason's "Phalanxes of Atlans" has some cool imagery.

    I think it would have been poetic in "the death of the moon" of when bug boy was dying and mourning the loss of his species, he looks up as sees the asteroid falling that kills the dinosaurs and finds a small peace in knowing it was inevitable (and that the damned Trex's family will die too).
    And he breaks the 4th wall and says, "Wow! This truly was an Amazing Story!"

    Ironically, Ellison's slumbering nightmare thing died horribly somewhere around 2012, inexorably poisoned to death by the effects of the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill along with an awful lot of the rest of the gulf biome. Took a while but the dinosaurs got their revenge.

    Excellent as always! I'm a huge fan of kaiju / giant monster fiction, especially the overlooked and obscure stuff, and your dinosaur short story videos have been immensely eye-opening. About THE DREAM A NIGHTMARE DREAMS: I believe this was Harlan Ellison's attempt to combined a dinosaur extinction theory with Lovecraftian cosmic horror as the Eyeless Horror feels like its one of The Great Old Ones or Elder Gods, considering its overwhelming powers via dreams, the hint of incoming Apocalyptic fate, the its incredible size seen through the crater it left behind.

  • @UCannotDefeatMyShmeat
    @UCannotDefeatMyShmeat ปีที่แล้ว

    My favourite aspect of stories like this, or one like man after man where the attitude of “we’lI always be here” is very common, is that a character will muse about something and then time will rhetorically pass and not only has that idea failed but was also likely forgotten

  • @dinodadreviews2923
    @dinodadreviews2923 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I liked "The Dream a Nightmare Dreams". You could mash it together with the "plot" of the Topps "Dinosaurs Attack" cards and the short story would make a decent backstory for the card collection. In particular, the character that fans sometimes call "Dinosaur Satan" can easily be interpreted as an incarnation of the entity from the short story, and the card "Saurian Secrets" even hints at a contingent of dinosaurs that are trying to mentally fight against it, again like in the short story.

    The Latest Thing from "A Story Without An End" sounds a lot like The Elder Things from H.P. Lovecraft's "At the Mountains of Madness" while The Eyeless Horror from "The Dream A Nightmare Dreams" is literally IT from Stephen King's "IT".

    "Death of the Moon" is definitely the story I liked the most.
    "The Story that never ends" just feels like prime r/im14andthisisdeep content to me. "What if humanity isn't the peak of creation?" doesn't hit as hard in the 21st century as in the 20th.
    "When you wish upon a star" is just a kid getting his wishes fulfilled with no bad repercussions or moral lesson (unless he actually feels any guilt and remorse over Alan's death), and instead of through dinosaurs the wishes could also be fulfilled by anything else.
    And the final story is just "what if aliens killed the dinosaurs?"
    I can respect the Death of the Moon story much more for having the aliens' encounter with dinosaurs actually fail.
    As for more dinosaur short stories, you should check out Brian Aldiss' "Poor Little Warrior".

    • @ChrissieBear
      @ChrissieBear 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      "The Story that never ends" doesn't quite feel like that to me, it feels more like a lesson about how humans shouldn't be so complacent in the idea that the world is made for us and that we're entitled to it. We're just another animal in the grand story of evolution.

    The Ellison one was strange, but it was too abstract for me to enjoy (it somehow reminded me of the Darling in the Franxx anime, which has a similarity, also I didn't think the last part of it was good). But A story without an end was the most interesting, because it's an early speculative evolution work.

    Off-topic for a minute, there's a pair of science-fiction dinosaur novels that would be good for a video...DINOSAUR PLANET and DINOSAUR PLANET SURVIVORS by Anne McCaffrey. These two novels were later published as a two-in-one novel titled THE MYSTERY OF IRETA. i think this duology was supposed to originally supposed to be a trilogy, but for some reason, this never came to pass.

    The last short story sounds a little bit more familiar, of the film that I saw as a kid. One in particular is "Rebirth of Mothra 3", When "King Ghidorah" (The Three-Headed Dragon) invade earth years ago, and kill off the Dinosaurs. Well "Mothra" (The Giant Moth) has to go travel back in time to save the dinosaurs from King Ghidorah. I know that sounds odd but you really need to see it. th-cam.com/video/iudoOXwVY54/w-d-xo.html

    • @richmcgee434

      Ellison's story is a simple Lovecraft rip-off. Slumbering eldritch horror at the bottom of the sea plaguing the dreams of mankind, yadda, yadda, not an original concept.
      The time travel in Rebirth gives me a right proper paradox headache, but the designs for both King Ghidorah and both forms of Mothra are pretty cool, especially Armored Mothra. Arguably the best film in the trilogy, although that isn't a hard bar to climb over.

      You've probably caught a variant of the memetic plague that increases sales on comic books that include (among other things) a dinosaur on the cover. DC Comics used to have an editorial policy limiting how many of their books each month could feature one, as well as limits on gorillas/monkeys, motorcycles, and excessive use of the color purple, all of which were similarly effective at driving sales. They were afraid people would build up an immunity to the effect over time and wanted to reserve it for when they were having a bad quarter, at which point they could haul out the purple dinosaur versus gorilla biker gang covers and get back in the black.
