"Wise, caring, and thoughtful"... these are things I want to be as a father. Paul assumes fathers will exercise parental authority and encourages restraint ("do not provoke your children to anger") in view of the absolute power fathers had in the culture of Paul's day. By ignoring this call to self-restraint, we may do our kids more harm than good. God's own patience, then, is to be our model.
