Documentary Class Assignment, Limkokwing University of Creative Technology Explore the rising trend of people living on a houseboat/narrowboat in London, UK.
My Cousin Alan and his wife did this for a few years out of London just after retirement and has a running blog of their experience through out. I think that is a lovely way to end a long career and enjoy their time together just the two and go around meeting up with family here and there.
This is my ideal life. I saw a nice liveaboard for just 140k and in a couple of months I'll have saved to buy it, or one like it. I've been begging and selling big issues for most of this year and I can get a loan on my council flat in Manchester that I'm subletting to students. Can't wait to live on one.
Good video. Thanks. Nice to see there still are people in Europe who talks with their neighbour. IF, the dollar crashes, the euro crashed and millions of jobs are lost in a short time, these people will be ok. Because they don't need mutch. While most people with a big house and 2 cars will have a massive problem.
You realise that to do this legally you need either a residential mooring (£10,000 a year in London) or to actually continuously cruise the whole country, not confine yourself to one short stretch of canal? Then you also need a licence, which will likely be a similar sum to residential council tax. It's not a cheap way of life!
The strange drum is called “madal” a very famous Musical instrument from my native Nepal. Nice to see few things like prayer flags and madal in the boat.
I lived on a narrow boat for 6 months. it is shit expensive mooring fee's and no room for anything. also always something to do definitely not the life most people assume it will be.
SavedByFaith2011 lol !..... there must be something about being competent and not being drunk in charge... but probably not very strict unless you have accident etc !... none of the others,. but I do like the idea of sailing or barging !!..
Petre .W. there are laws regarding being drunk in charge of a boat! not sure the guidelines but I'm pretty sure its like a car, if its live a board I'm not sure on the stationary part? maybe keys out of the ignition???
I visited the little venice area where them two young chaps were interviewed. It's a really pretty area but it's let down a lot buy the tatty boats or people slumming it along the canal. Needless to say there are also some very nice boats / homes but I do feel a lot of people let it down .
I`ve been on narrow boat holidays many times and I`m afraid there are lots of people like this slumming it on the canals. How much does it cost to put some fresh paint on, what is after all, your home and keep it tidy inside.
Hello folks has anyone been to Holland and seen the canals and boats. I have a question maybe you can answer. Years ago I saw a film somewhere about families living on the canal boats. The families would hop off the barge while in route using an arm swivel. Have you seen such a thing? I can't find anything on TH-cam.
To Nr 1 alternative living Blonde, see Babe you are a Hoarder, face it,one Day that Thing is so filled up,there`s only one Way,yep, south, further. through constant Water/Bilge/Pump,all Canal boats got a Mini-Weather system on them and are logical effin moist...
DanOfTheWild as for being deemed a 'boat rat' for reporting being raped by other boaters , in pretty sure I speak for majority of boaters by saying that we would all be completely disgusted by anyone being assaulted in any way and would most likely beat the culprit senseless while waiting for the police.
So called continuous cruisers clogging up London canals make my blood boil. These people freely admit they are abusing the system, designed for those travelling around the country, not covering the same few miles back and forwards just to live in central London on the cheap! They selfishly take moorings for days or weeks, so no genuine visitors have a chance. If they can't afford a residential mooring they shouldn't be there. Abuse of the system should result in confiscation and scrapping of the boat.
The London narrow boats seem to be very unloved and tatty, don't the owners clean or tidy up ? I don't think these are real narrow boat people more economic residents in London. The narrow boats I've seen in the midlands and other areas look loved and cared for ( and tidy) Typical students, don't care about the rules, over staying on their mooring and screw everyone else ! And before anyone slags me off I'm from London.
I have yet to see one of these narrowboat videos without a crappy hipster folk band. It's the least appealing aspect of the life, even worse than emptying your own shit tank.
I love this lifestyle! this is my dream & I've nearly got the cash now after years busking & selling the big issue
@merlinsdog How's it going now? :)

I'm seriously considering this, had enough of the property tax rip off. Cheers

It's tiny house living ON THE WATER!!! Mind blown :-o
Cool stuff, but what when the water freezes?

glenn spicer yea I know, people who live in homes are so much tidier...
glenn spicer I totally agree with you. But you have to accept that some people are ok living in a mess. It's no effort to keep things clean.
Hello dad! Fancy seeing you here! :-) lol
Ben.
Not all bad. Living on the water would be cool in a lot of different ways.

Makes me look very tidy..Why are so many of em such scruffy sods? Mines a Zen boat in comparison .
"were continuous cruisers which means we live in London... "
Is it always so noisy?
Wow I get a little seasick.

Why is it depressing? Some people like these life styles ;).
where do flush the leu
Ed Sheeran before he was famous!
solar power?
"this is the stove... where we cook.... um food... which is fun..."
A very nice group of people but it looks like you're living in a floating hallway.A few more feet of beam would make all the difference.
It is called a narrow boat
yes it's called a narrowboat, houseboat would be stagnant on the water, unable to mobile around.
Since making the video , how many of those filmed still live on the boats?
how you flush the toilet? and where the shitt go?
imagine that, putting logs on a burner....and they burn lol
is that Ed Sheeran
i thought that too.
Ed on his gap year
It did look like him.

Such a shame about the bad audio. Would have been a great little documentary otherwise
+LilyHulaGirl yes i'm sorry about that. I was a student at that point and didnt have much experience about everything. lesson learned.
+DanOfTheWild Probably since firearms aren't permitted there.
DanOfTheWild I have never heard of a rape culture with narrowboats?
Granted I don't live in mine but iv never heard of that?

Interesting but are all longboat owners slobs. Not one boat shown in good order.
azimmey my boat is clean, but only after I clean up.
Solar panel will give you free power
My god, what a depressing video.

Better off living in a Cave.
