    I'm in the traditional antique and vintage mall. What I am seeing is that the 20 to 40 somethings are discovering that grandma's brown furniture isn't that bad if the doilies go away. Many of this age group are already replacing their Ikea and Rooms to Go furniture because it is designed to fail in 8 years. They are discovering that the old is old for a reason.
    A big flip that I have noticed is that everything, including houses, are becoming disposable. For years career-oriented youth, they don't want to be tied to their possessions. It's a matter of making do until they feel like they made it or a child or two has changed their lives.

      Ya well they were raised in an Era disposable changed its name to planned obsolescence. Yet another reason to be very careful when selling New stuff older than say 10 years (the magical self destruct metric engineered into all products of value). I think a much better way to play these current trends is by selling parts. It is very hard to find parts because the manufacturers never figured anybody would want to own any of their inferior products passed the self-destruct time frames. The rare times I buy in these yrs I have made the most money by breaking them down and selling the pieces. If not that certainly highlighting the value there in.

    Thanks for the good advice. I have just gotten into antiquing. I got started during the pandemic when tons of beautiful art glass by companies like Fenton and Westmoreland were being basically dumped on the market. I took home lots of things from the Brimfield MA antique show. But, when I went back this year, there wasn't nearly as much. I found mostly seconds, damaged pieces or ordinary stuff, and just a few. The show was full of lots of clothing, plastic, empty containers and other stuff that looked like flea market junk to me. But I can see why many people would appreciate this stuff. It represents their childhood. We are now in a time when Grandma and Gramps went to Woodstock, and the generation that survived the depression is almost gone. Times change. But, I'll still hold unto the Great Depression era stuff because the young people of today are also living through financial crisis, and it will be natural for them to look back to their ancestors for wisdom, because the Boomers have little of that.

    For me its about buying into a fantasy....whether its your childhood or a timeperiod. For example there are 20-30 somethings that like "Dark Academia" and will buy a Victorian sitting chair to achieve that fantasy aesthetic AND THEN others who want toys from the 1990's if they want to go back to their (albeit recent) childhood.

    I agree 100% with what you are saying. I can see the changes happening at the antique mall that I have a booth in. A lot of younger people are coming in to shop and there have been several new vendors that have just started selling vintage clothing in their booths. I’m not ready to open up a used clothing store in my current booth but wouldn’t mind getting a second booth for selling 70’s clothing and household items.

I don't want to list each item individually nor want stranger coming to my house to "see what I have" I'd be glad to sell at a fair price to both of us, but I don't want to be preyed upon. If an item would sell to a customer for $40, what would be a fair price a dealer to pay?

Agree - the hot things are vintage clothing and records. Pyrex and old Correlle Ware. Wish we could find more of those too. 2021 was the year of the sports card for us. My husband had a sports card shop in the 80s and had a lot of old inventory and sold almost all of it last year. The ones I leave behind can enjoy or deal with what I left. Maybe it will end up in your grand kid's store and they will love it like I did. The circle , wow, deep and heavy.

    I love buying and selling, and it’s important to know what’s going on in the industry but it’s less painful for everyone if they stay in their lane. For you, you focused on stuff you knew about like gaming consoles which sounds like a great fit. But another price if this is that there will always be a market for what you like so if the thing you know about and like is not “in vogue” currently, don’t worry just don’t assume you can sell a ton of it on. Maybe find something else you personally like and know about. The biggest issues I’ve seen is when someone treats buying and selling like wall street. It will end up with you having too much product and losing a ton and personally I believe a person acting out like that deserves to lose their shirt. When you treat items with the respect they deserve everyone wins. Anyway great video and channel

    The trend towards 80’s and 90’s stuff is totally not working for me. I have zero idea what was popular in this period. In the 80’s I was in church and went to a Christian school, and modernism was discouraged. Then in the late 80’s I was married, still in church, and bearing and nursing children. A whole decade went by that I spent in a rocking chair or a church pew. This went on through the 90’s. And while raising this brood of children, we were poor and had no money for all this popular stuff. I remember Barney, pogs, my little pony, and way back to Atari. I’ve never been “popular,” so this does not come naturally to me. Lol. I have my own likes and style. Soooo....I am selling what I know, but it’s far less profitable. VHS players, vintage sewing items (my mainstay), tupperware and vintage items. I try books, but they don’t peddle well. I love dishes, but because of weight and shipping, they don’t sell well. I go for “unique.” I had a boyfriend once who said I was “unique.” So maybe that’s my style and what I understand. My hubs is a gear head, so we have had some success selling off his collections of auto parts and other mechanical goodies. Sometimes I find the darndest things, and they sell! One item in mind was a package of USA made thumbtacks. They were older, maybe 80’s? Anyway, $10. Gotta wonder who would spend $10 on thumbtacks, but as you say, the stuff available today is so chintzy, it’s undesirable. Thanks for the lecture. I enjoyed your knowledge and perspective.

    Everything always goes in cycles. In the 70s, you could buy Victorian furniture and paintings dirt cheap. Nowadays, the price of such traditional items such as oriental rugs, 19th-century American paintings, Depression glass, and 18th-century furniture is down about 75% compared to 30 years ago. Eventually these items will come back - we are starting to see millennials looking at good-quality wood furniture and comparing it to what they can buy at Ikea. You want to be ahead of these trends if you can.
    I read where some hedge fund guy raised $40 million, bought a ton of high-quality 18th-century American furniture, and is storing it in a warehouse. These guys are not stupid, they know that you should be buying when no one else is that interested.

    I get it. I see it too. But things from the 1980’s are not antiques. Those are vintage things, and vintage is what’s “in” now. If you have the word “antique” and not “vintage” in you store’s name, that’s where the problem is. Vintage is hip and trendy. Antique is fuddy duddy. People would go antiquing. Now we’re thrifting. I buy antique paper, because it’s in the public domain and I can copy it. I buy vintage Avon jewelry because Avon is sturdy and hypoallergenic. Stay away from the word “antique” if you want to attract youngsters. Change the name of your business! Don’t be changing definitions.

    • @66uniqueantiques
      @66uniqueantiques  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      We can agree to disagree as the opinions on “antique” will go on for decades but the young people that stop into our shop in droves don’t say I love all this vintage stuff they say I love all this antique stuff.
