In June 2016 Tories voted for Brexit. In October 2021 Tory MPs voted to ditch EU clean waters law, the bill, intended to revamp the UK’s environmental regulations post Brexit, allowed raw sewage to be discharged into the country’s waterways. Coincidence? I think not..

Some tories voted for Brexit, as did some Labour. However, the Tories officially campaigned to remain, that was the party policy decided on by Cameron.
Perhaps you feel they shouldn't have been permitted a free vote on the subject? After all, the Remain position is based on the principle of leaving others to make decisions for you.

The true Brexit believers haven't changed their minds at all. They just think Brexit wasn't made properly due to incompetence from politicians, malice from the EU or both.

I am a Brit who has spent a large amount of time overseas, lived in 4 countries and can speak 4 languages including English, so I can see Britain from the 'outside looking in' . My impression is that the Empire is dead and anyone who thinks Britain is 'exceptional' and Brits are somehow different (by that I mean better) than anyone else is dreaming.
Britain is still respected in many countries, we have shot our selves in the foot with Brexit and deliberately isolated ourselves from our European neighbours. With calls to further isolate the country by exiting the ECHR so that the right wing can 'remigrate ' legal migrants and their familes is a recipe for complete disaster. Turning Britain into a right wing version of North Korea off the coast of France is sheer lunacy.
Britain should embrace it's remarkable history warts and all, not to try and return to a 'golden past' that never really existed.

@@paulsaunders6536 I am not having difficulty with it. If only the EU had abandoned its idea of being a political union, we'd surely still be it. I understand there was some noble intention behind it ("Never again" and so on) but it was a mistake. It should have remained a trading bloc.
One thing - if remainers hadn't insulted Brexit supporters, like you just have, again I think the vote could have gone the other way. Many people love Europe, European people, European culture (indeed, we are European) while disliking the EU - but they really hate the remainers who would insult them as thick and so on.

Brexit was always going to be a disaster. My 90 year old father was tempted to fall for the "recreation of Empire" BS in 2016, but I talked him out of it. Too bad more people were not told the reality. I grew up in Britain but left in the bad old days of the 1970's with its strikes and rolling electricity blackouts. Businesses could only work 3 days a week! The IMF was running the Treasury. People forget how poor Britain was before the EU and Margaret Thatcher brought it into the modern world. I have been a proud Canadian now for decades and wouldn't dream of going back to Britain. Canada is as dependent on the US economy as Britain should be on the wonderful, huge EU market. We know that dealing with the US is tough - they use every unfair means to exploit their size that they can. A US/UK free trade agreement would take a decade to negotiate and Britain would have to open up its markets to the force of American competition. Lots of British companies would go bankrupt under such competitive pressure, so make sure you know what you are getting into before you let it happen.
As for the Commonwealth - lots of the former colonies remember the exploitation and cruelty which Britain doled out to them. Ask Australians what they think of Winston Churchill - the man who tried to refuse to let Australian troops go home to defend their own country from Japanese invasion! Churchill also planned the disastrous slaughter of Australian and NZ soldiers at Gallipoli in WW1. India was denied the chance to use its cotton to make cloth - it had to be done in Lancashire. African freedom fighters were often tortured to death. British history books are largely fiction when it comes to describing the empire.
The best option for Britain and its young people is to go crawling back to the EU and beg for the best re entry deal which they will give you - it won't be what you had before. Anyway, good luck!

Bob Geldof articulates well the thinking behind Brexit. At the end of the day, it was a combo of nostalgia for lost empire and a pragmatic need to protect the very current money laundering biz in London. The EU were in the process of writing rules to curtail money laundering which had implications throughout Europe, and the UK in particular. The money men in London were desperate to protect their franchise. This is not the only driver behind Brexit, but it's a key one , and under reported.
Ppl ask who benefited from Brexit? IMO just two sectors. Money laundering and tourism, boosted by the devalued pound, persistently down 20% since 2016.

The fundamental issue is that Britain needs the Commonwealth more than the Commonwealth needs Britain. Brexiteers promised a fairy tale wherein Britain would resume it's former place as the heart of a global trade empire. Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand, and many, many others simply laughed because they could make their own trade deals without the British Monarch sitting at the head of the table. Indeed, without Britain at the table at all. The Brexiteers who preached about "freedom" and "sovereignty" failed to understand that the Commonwealth nations also want those things - from Britain.

It's a joke to suggest that the Commonwealth in any represents the future of British trade and economic growth. I say this as a Canadian who supports our ties with the UK.
Canada has dozens of free trade agreements with other countries. Our agreement with the US is the most successful bilateral trade agreement in the world. But we have very little trade with the UK, and there are few opportunities to expand it.
The irony of this erroneous idea that Canada and other Commonwealth economies represent an untapped opportunity for Britain is that the UK would have free trade with Canada right now if it had stayed in the EU. The EU/Canada FTA, called CETA, was concluded after Brexit.

He threatened to tear it up or force a major renegotiation. His declared his intention to renegotiate soon after he was sworn in. This began in August 2017 and was concluded by the end of 2018. Little was changed in the agreement and the US did not get any major concessions on manufacturing, resources or intellectual property. The name was changed to USMCA, which for some reason, Trump boasted of as a big win. He was a shitty negotiator anyway - he blustered, threatened to end NAFTA, and issued ultimatums. Not only that but Thatcher set out to undermine the working classes by destroying industry and manufacturing. Our infrastructure was sold off to private and foreign interests. Capital was thereby transferred to London and the South East or abroad.
North Sea Gas was spent instead of creating a sovereign wealth fund like ,say, Norway.
The Home Counties /London area was given a sense of exceptionalism and entitlement reinforcing this need for post imperial nostalgia.
However Brexit has not gone as well as they had hoped.
We have ended up with an economy of taking in each other's washing and living on tick.

Brexit was an attempt to implement a purist free-market ideology that was out of touch with economic realities.
This delusion has cost the country dearly, and the economic data is now bearing that out.
The point of Brexit was deregulating the financial sector.
Despite the government's assertions of wanting to improve economic competitiveness through Brexit, their real aim was to enhance competitiveness and regulatory efficiency in the financial sector.
They chose to ignore the fact that post-Brexit deregulation in the financial sector, alongside a fragile economy lacking decades of public investment, would lead to the disastrous consequences Brexit Britain is facing right now.

Brexit is rarely talked about as the UK existential crisis that it was. Britain never admitted it wasn't quite relevant any more. First, let's be honest, this was about England. It's always about England's dreaming. The Empire was the English flagship dragging an ambivalent Scotland and a furious Ireland in its wake. The UK was England and cohort. After the First World War, the UK refused to admit it had lost its place at the center of the world. It stubbornly went on as an Empire. In World War II, it faced Germany as if it were still a world power. After the war, it was broken down and miserable. It lost India, became a third rate power, but it stubbornly went on. It became America's liaison in Europe in the fight against the Soviet Union. It exported culture and imported finance and joined Europe. After some rough decades, it still punched well above its weight, but all along there was a creeping feeling in England's dreaming. What was the point of the UK anyway?
After the financial crisis in 2008, England lost its confidence. That creeping feeling in England's dreaming came to the surface. When Cameron's austerity struck at the working classes, someone had to be blamed. Blame immigrants! Blame Europe! The UK, well, England, well, no, London -- the point is: it was the country upon which the sun never set, never mind the rain. Was the sun finally setting? Was Britain finally facing the diminished place in the world that France and Spain and Portugal and the Netherlands faced? Was the UK relevant any more? Of course it was!
England lashed out at Europe, dragging a reluctant Scotland in its wake. England could be great again. Without Europe, Little England could finally be left alone and at the same time London could be the center of the world again -- Singapore on the Thames! -- this, essentially, is what a Leaver is. A Remainer is someone who accepts that England will never be great again, that the UK will continue to devolve, but the future of Britain or England or London -- however the case may be, the future is with the European collective. The Remainer is delusional and the Leaver is resigned. There is no sense of victory, here, no sense of resolve, only dismay. And Starmer creeps on, just trying not to break anything else.

Always loved Britain, went to Norwich for a semester and Edinburgh for a Masters. Love(d) English beer, accents, people. Never understood why even with younger generations this reverence for the monarchy has still not been left in the past, where it belongs. Yes, kings and queens, and nobles and heroes are part of our history, but we are not living in the Middle Ages any more. Britain was one of the great powers back then, especially at sea. Today it is, well, just another island that still seems to have a hard time being part of a greater union. And even if they want to go it alone, fine, I just wish they'd be able to find better leaders, and I am talking as much about traditional parties as about moronic outliers like Farage. And how on earth does the Commonwealth still exist, when it was never about the "common wealth" for everybody, but only England at the time?
