    I remember using a shinai in some of the sparring videos raised a few eyebrows, but I don't think anyone has a problem with the Bokken. :) I think one thing people want to see is more protective headgear though. Some of the weapons you spar against have the potential to penetrate a kendo mask, which is quite dangerous. Stay safe out there and keep on making great content!

    Interesting almost identical, in each case, down to the frame (1/30th of a second). I suspect this is because the practitioner has a speed at which they have trained to move with fully integrated and correct coordination, and I suspect this speed was ingrained with a sword close to the weight and handling dynamics of the real katana. The result of this would be motion that would not necessarily be faster with the lighter bokken. The other possibility is the added weight of a katana being negligible for someone trained in kenjutsu. The latter suggests that there could be an ideal sword weight for a practitioner, one which sacrifices no speed/timing and yet has the greatest authority in action.

    Bokken is slightly faster but the Katana has more follow through and heft to it, naturally.

    As somebody who has a Bokken and does indeed train with it (for training purposes only) I can assure you Bokkens are not as easy to use or practice with like how it's displayed and shown in the video.
    They are made from solid and polished wood making them MUCH more heavier then the katana, like I had to train my arms up more just to use it.
    If you want to train with weapons and your ideal is the Bokken or Katana I would recommend starting with smaller and easier weapons such as Sais, Karmas, Tonfas or Kali Sticks. Starting with these weapons can help strengthen your arms immensely before going for more heavier weapons like the Bokken or even the Katana. Take this advice from somebody who has done 14 years of Martial arts and has done four years of training with weapons.

      Dude your arms must have been sticks if a bokken was too heavy for you

    • @gabriellebowman2520
      @gabriellebowman2520 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@svenhurlimann1099 actually.... they weren't sticks. I feel like I didn't word it correctly, Bokkens yes they do have added weight and are probably abit lighter then the katana its self(most martial art weapon props usually are a tad bit lighter then the actual weapons) but that's only when your holding them, the real weight comes when your actively using it.
      You have to put at least some force into actually moving it(and if your short like me, and not fall over or loose your balance, I'm 5'1) and even now after like say 20-30 minutes roughly, training with a bokken or even Kali sticks for that matter, my arms will always still be aching and shaking by the end of it, you can laugh its okay.
      Just know everybody can have physical differences that can affect what they train in or what they train with.

      The typical bokken used in kendo is between 500g and 600g, koryu bokken may vary. An Edo period katana will usually range between 800g and 1600g.
      Perhaps you are using a suburitou?

      Jamás he oído de ninguna espada real que pese menos de un kilo (soy historiador). Ni siquiera un iaito pesaría tan poco, pero a lo mejor hay iaitos (de níquel, no hierro ni acero) que sí pesan así de poco, ya que las espadas de HEMA tienden a pesar menos de un kilo también.

      Ahora, si que hubieron espadas de más de un kilo, los mandobles alemanes, escocés, y algunos Nodachi. Por lo que si hubieron espadas de más de un kilo de peso, no eran regulares pero si existieron.

      @@VictorGarcia-qk3dn Sí, o sea: las espadas "auténticas" (de acero y cortantes) suelen superar el kilo y medio, pero en artes marciales (en HEMA por ejemplo) las réplicas que utilizan incluso siendo de acero sin filo pesan a veces menos de un kilo por razones de practicidad, para que no sea tan duro entrenar con ellas (sobre todo me refiero a ropera y espada bastarda, los mandobles y espadas muy largas obviamente sí pesan más incluso de práctica).
      Por lo que respecta a espadas japonesas, normalmente superan también el kilo y medio si son auténticas y cuando son iaito (espadas de práctica sin filo para iaido etc) intentan otorgarle un peso lo más similar posible para que sea más auténtico. Qué quiere decir esto? Que si la tuya pesa menos probablemente esté hecha con otra aleación de hierro y carbono diferente a la que se utiliza normalmente, no es "tradicional" pero te puede servir igual de bien para practicar (yo por ejemplo entreno con bokken y shinai porque soy flojo xd)

      While they build strength and endurance, they can also develop bad habits such as cutting from the arms (rather than from the hara). Niten ichi-ryu makes a point of using spatula thin bokuto (350g-400g) because the believe that it better teaches correct edge alignment, I also suspect that it allows them to train their kata with more realism due to injury reduction.

      Yes but it's the grade of injury that counts since a punch or a wrong hit of a regular shinai can also cause injury, that doesn't mean the injury is severe, in this case I have no idea but I would think a heavier, steel material can hit significantly harder (again, I'm no expert in sword making)
