  • A viewer named Mike kindly sent us a couple boxes of the Rio Royal MG Armored slug AND a new gel block. I've had my eye on this slug for years hoping I would be able to test them. We test these against a wide-variety of targets and I have to say I was surprised at the performance.

What it did in the gel block is exactly what RIO claims it will do in a "tissue" target...good to know that they weren't just making stuff up. Automatic captioning has decided that your channel is called 'Tile Floater Mouse', Jeff. Gave me a good laugh, which I really needed today, after spending several hours in freezing cold, pissing rain, digging mud out of a jammed conveyor belt, this afternoon.

Hello guys, big fan of this channel for several years! I´m from Europe ( Portuga) and these slugs from my experience are very precise and effective on wild boar and red stag.
My first kill as a hunter has with these slugs, back then i only had a shotgun, a least here they where cheap and available

I think the slug did the right thing for the penetrator pin. It forced the target to make it catch the lead full-stop to allow even more inertia for the pin/screw. The smaller surface area meant it would act as a sabot within the soft tissue. I’d love to see what this does to the gel torso.

That is wacky. So it's both armor penetrating AND frangible, punishing to both soft and hard targets. Wild.

I am a retired LEO out of California, and for half of my career I worked at an agency located in the Eastern Sierra mountains. We dealt with a lot of black bears. Mostly our bear program envolved using bean bag rounds and pyrotechnic rounds to punish and scare the bears away from dumpsters and houses etc. But there were times when the bears posed a true danger to the public or they were seriously injured and in those cases the bears were put down as humanely as we could. On one occasion it took three Brenneke KO slugs and a point blank shot of 00 buck to end a 200# bear. The Brenneke slug was supposed to be the greatest thing since sliced bread, but they failed to put the bear down after three shots. I was involved in the post mortem and found that the slugs only penetrated 3 inches and deflected off of bone. One of them hit the spin causing partial paralysis, but not death. I felt this was completely unacceptable.
I began searching and testing different dangerous game rounds for smooth bore shotgun and the RIO Royal was tested. From 20 feet the slug would penetrate a creosote soaked railroad tie, 8"x8". Shortly after that a large bear was hit by a car and killed. I was able to test the round on the carcass. I was taking oblique shots at the heart/lung area and got 8" of penetration through hair, hyde and bone. I began issuing the RIO Royal to the troops. This was back in the early 2000's maybe 2003-2005. Rio Royal is a phenominal slug for thicker skinned game and car doors/tempered glass, etc.

I could never give you folks a thumbs down as you always put your best effort into your productions. Nice to see Brianna and her baby. That slug was so weird that I'd be hesitant about using it on game unless they were wearing a helmet. Thanks

12:26 I played that WW2 game when it came out on PC in 2002. Battlefield 1942 -- I always played hard mode by using allied forces equipment and I always won in the end. I switched over to German or Japanese equipment and made mincemeat out of all of my competitors.

Very cool slug! I'd use them confidently with one tweak . A snap ring /e clip on the screw ,over a washer . I'd bet it Is made of hot sintered lead . It behaves as a heavy jacketed ,frangible core rifle bullet. Stays solid when it hits solid objects . Hits a soft target with a high moisture content , it all but explodes. See the Barnes mrp bullets and varmint grenade bullets for examples. Really cool stuff

Yeah red, it was fun to watch you shoot. just a goofy. We used to take a shotshell , put a drop some wax on the middle of the crimp, take a knife and cut around the brass, and punch the whole case shell, wad, and everything in front of the powder downrange.

I have some Rio Slugs that completely surprised me. When shot at a 5 gallon water jug, it dumped all its energy immediately, shredding that huge water jug and sending water everywhere, including back at me from about 8 yards away. I was very surprised at just how well it out performed all the other slugs I tested. It has made in Italy cast into the slug and it looks nothing like the other American, Russian or European slugs that I have or have seen here on Taofledermaus.

Nice video, Thanks for all you do. One thing I would like to see is on a clear ballistics block, is for you to sprinkle some M&M's on top to see if they would launch off in different directions like a wave effect.
