  • From the 1946 musical 'Till the Clouds Roll By,' a fictionalised biography of Jerome Kern, comes the finale. It features a medley of songs by one of America's greatest song writers: 'Yesterdays' with the MGM Studio Chorus; 'Long Ago and Far Away' with Kathryn Grayson; 'A Fine Romance' with Virginia O'Brien; 'All the Things You Are' with Tony Martin; 'Why Was I Born' with Lena Horne; and a grand closing number in a typically astonishing MGM set that features 'Ol' Man River' superbly sung by Frank Sinatra. (VCR vid quality not too good but hopefully it will suffice!)

This is a terrific finale, but upon closer look, it appears that some performances didn't make the final cut! When they're pulling back, right after Frank Sinatra finished singing, one sees a "podium" with a guy on it between Kathryn Grayson and Virginia O'Brien. Yet in the finale, it goes from Grayson directly to O'Brien. Then at the extreme right, one sees a shorter "podium" after Lena Horne's (with the stylized tree) on which it appears there are three people! Yet in the finished print, , once Horne is finished they cut to Frank Sinatra down with the orchestra. Does anyone have an idea who these performers were, and what songs they sang? Wish they'd kept these numbers in, and cut out some of the tedious, phony "Uncle Jerry" -- "Sally Hessler" scenes!

The man was definitely singer Johnny Johnston, then married to Kathryn Grayson - his entire part was deleted from the film. He sang Dearly Beloved, which was a big hit for him back in the 1940's. The woman at the end between the 2 men was probably Lucille Bremer, who dances at the beginning of the sequence and probably closed it by "singing" (she was dubbed) The Way You Look Tonight before Sinatra's part.
