For years, I couldn't remember the name of this show and I've been Googling "FRENCH CARICATURE ARTIST WITH CLASSICAL MUSIC TREEHOUSE SHOW" for so long I was convinced I made it up. Finally fucking found it and I feel so validated. It's just a creepy and awesome as I remember. Worth the effort to find it.
I love how all of us were creeped out by this show in the 90s but still watched it. I used to be terrified to leave my room at night or first thing in the mornings because for some reason I was convinced Smart Arty was waiting outside for me.
To think I actually forgot that I even watched this as a very young child myself...Goodness me. Thank goodness I came across this after i was watching art attack here & had a memory flash....I love the old skool classics. So nostalgic.
I remember this program being gold dust on TV. There was never a set schedule it was just on when it was on and god did I love it when it was. VCR RECORD ALL THE THINGS!
I was surprised when I learnt it was for disabiltied children since I quite liked the show. Oh yes, thanks for replying and giving me an answer about the song/music.
i was listening to the music in college that's played when Neil Buchanan is doing the arty bit and i kept thinking "I've heard this in a programme and there is no talking in the programme!!" i spent all day at college trying to figure it out and i rememberd it was this programme! Aww nostalgia!!!
Used to loved this when I was little and still do but I still cant figure out that Smart Arty was actually Neil from Art Attack. I always thought it was somebody else
Y'know, since the guy who played Cuthbert Lily also played Tricky Dicky, I wonder who played Tricky Dicky when it was a full shot of the comics where you can see both of them.
I can see why people were weirded out from this. The music in the beginning sequence is way too somber for the zany concept, turning it into a different kind of strangeness.
I believe we all loved zzzap, I just feel sorry for the kids nowadays, as I heard they have less better shows to watch? Don't know if it's true though. I always found Neil's art "Magic" LOL.
the music used for smarty arty was just used in a baby tv programme that my 8 month old watches and all of a sudden this programme sprang to my mind so i had to look it up. lol looks so cheesy now but i used to watch this when i ws 8 years old lol
The true definition of a 90's kid is somebody who was alive throughout the entire decade and not born during it, has recollection of the whole decade and not just some of it, and was still under 18 when the decade eclipsed. basically anyone who was in infant or junior school in the early 90's is a 90's kid
Smart Arty was always my fav. I would be really disappointed when he wasn't on. i loved this show i can't believe i found it. had 2 google uk kids shows and there it was, right at the very bottom of the list. i knew it was the one when i saw the name. thnx so much uploader
This was my favourite show when I was little! Took me ages to figure out it was 'Zzzap' with 3 Z's though! Otherwise I'd have found it much sooner... :D LOVE IT SO MUCH! :D
Hi all, if you love Zzzap! then head on over to the Zzzap Appreciation Society on Facebook - it's a brand new page with facts, videos and more! Hopefully see some of you there? Please spread the word!
joegarston thankyou for that comment. Always thought that music when they zoomed in and parts of the show eerie and creepy. Something unsettling about it but never knew why.
Omg !! i've been searching for this for years. Could not remember the name of it. I watched it when i was 1 and 2 ... I remember being so scared of some parts but i always watched it. So many Memories
The Handymen used to absolutely terrify me as a kid lol I was convinced they were haunted floating hands that were going to come into my bedroom at night, grab my leg and pull me into a dark void of some kind if I were to put one leg out on top of the blanket on warm nights. Crazy how my mind worked back then haha!
I know this sounds ridiculous but my little sister was playing her toy piano and the song came on to the smart arty guy, and I just immediatley remembered this programme and went straight onto youtube. Haha!
I still like Smarty Arty and his classic music and Tricky Dickys Mission impossible.. (Yeah nice fun name) Haha. These were the best shows on TV back then.
I remembered the other day watching this show as a kid so I thought I'd check it out, but I swear I don't remember it being nearly this creepy. Especially the music at 0:53, I'm an adult but even that scared that crap out of me.
I wonder what Cuthbert Lilly's music is - it has a similar kind of vibe to Yakety Sax, so was it another Spider Rich / Boots Randolph tune, something inspired by it or something else?

I couldn't even remember Smart Arty! All I remembered was Boccherini's Minuet and Trio and the opening!
The music when it zooms in on each segment still scares me for some reason.
It is a bit on the creepy side.
And me!
So glad I'm not the one who thought this!
Jonny Jennings Try watching it on acid mmaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan!
Me too!
Remember watching this as a kid. For some reason, thinking about it now the show made me feel uneasy. The show seems very 'trippy' now xD
The 1990s was BLATANTLY the BEST decade for kiddies' television!!!! XD
I am on such a nostalgia binge right now! First Art Attack, then Fun House, then Knightmare and now Zzzap! The 90s had such great kid's TV!
I love how all of us were creeped out by this show in the 90s but still watched it. I used to be terrified to leave my room at night or first thing in the mornings because for some reason I was convinced Smart Arty was waiting outside for me.
i got that feeling
That 90's artwork from the start...so nostalgic!
To think I actually forgot that I even watched this as a very young child myself...Goodness me. Thank goodness I came across this after i was watching art attack here & had a memory flash....I love the old skool classics. So nostalgic.

That annotation about Neil Buchanan popped up juuuust as I asked myself if it was him. It freaked me out for a second. :)
Jesus, this takes me back, i loved, very unique and quirky.
One of my fave 90s kids tv shows i watched as a kid😂👌💕💕
I never realised that it was Neil doing the arty bit in that when I was a kid I was always too sidetracked by the eyebrows haha.
I always hated that we never saw what was behind some of the segments :-(
Neil Buchanan is such a legend I never realised this was him :)
I'm 25, and after being reminded about this show, had to look it up.
I miss these days so much, I could cry.
I was surprised when I learnt it was for disabiltied children since I quite liked the show.

I remember watching this when I was 4/5 years old. Now i'm 21. Boy how time flies! It sure does bring back a lot of good, happy memories. :D :D
Zzzap! SM:TV, Fun House, Art Attack and more so many memories.

Used to have me some creepy nightmares about the artist guy
The artist guy is the same guy who did Art Attack just in costume on here

"I Remember watching this kids zzzzap programme along time ago when i was a little kid!!!!!!!" ;-)
I remember watching this show when i was really little back in 2000-2005 this show defined my childhood :)
joegarston thankyou for that comment. Always thought that music when they zoomed in and parts of the show eerie and creepy. Something unsettling about it but never knew why.

HOLY MOLY. I loved this to bits.
I've got episode 4 as well, but it will be very difficult to upload. I might do it if I get some free time.

Oh yes I am a true 90's kid (1991) and this is a true 90's kids show. :D

Wow. This is way too much nostalgia for me to handle!
OMG i loved this show when i was little!!* Good Times XD
The Handymen used to absolutely terrify me as a kid lol I was convinced they were haunted floating hands that were going to come into my bedroom at night, grab my leg and pull me into a dark void of some kind if I were to put one leg out on top of the blanket on warm nights. It was made in 1993. It had ten series up until 2001.
SANTA MARIA! so many forgotten childhood memories have been brought back
ah the good old days. used to rush home from school just so i could watch this
How did I not know this was a cartoon for the deaf when I was younger? Not that it makes a difference, used to love this so much.
I remember small chunks of this show! I thought I'd made it all up as no one ever seemed to remember it. Looking back at it now it seems a bit creepy
'That art guy' is neil Buchannen. Happy art attack times :D
This shit used to terrify me as a kid. The whole creepy ass music that played and weird goings on. Eugh haha
3:40 I swear I used to do that to every rail as a kid, must have got it from this show LOL
I know this sounds ridiculous but my little sister was playing her toy piano and the song came on to the smart arty guy, and I just immediatley remembered this programme and went straight onto youtube. Haha!
@keiracounsell nah, they're definately around. Zzzap (series 10) was still being repeated on the CITV channel about 3 years ago.
I still like Smarty Arty and his classic music and Tricky Dickys Mission impossible.. (Yeah nice fun name) Haha.
These were the best shows on TV back then.
Art Attack was on for 3 years before this started.
@Supastarsssss the eye was not used until series 8. it was never used before then, only the question mark.
@hayzxhayz yes he did, starting with the second series. It was only in this first series that he did the 'big art attacks'
@bocketroom I wish :( They've dibanded now, so god knows where all the zzzap tapes are
This programme was the most terrifying thing I had watched in all of my childhood.
I have a feeling this may have been the first episode of ZZZAP!!!!!!!!! I ever saw, when it was repeated in the middle of 1996.
omg I had forgotten about this!! i must of been about 7/8 when i watched this!
My childhood.
Thank you! Always wanted to know that. It's one of those classical pieces everyone knows but can't name.
The thing that always stood out for me with this show was the obviously fake magazine covers on the rack. Which I wasn't supposed to even notice.
used to watch this every friday when a got in from school luved it so much lol
@ShinyMagnezone his name is tricky dicky. he was only present in the first series until Daisy Dares You replaced him.
I remembered the other day watching this show as a kid so I thought I'd check it out, but I swear I don't remember it being nearly this creepy. Especially the music at 0:53, I'm an adult but even that scared that crap out of me.
