  • Finally biting the bullet and removing the transmission from my 2001 Ford Excursion to address the transmission fluid leak when hot. Good thing I did too, as you can see the problem is a little more involved than just a simple seal...

Excellent video, thank you for taking the time to do it. I know it’s an old video but this helped me identify why the transmission was pouring fluid. Just bought this truck at auction, I drove it for 1.5 hours/ 100 miles and my cousin , he was following me, noticed smoke so I pulled over. Oil was coming out of the inspection cover. Called a town and we made it home. Dropped the Transmission and the seal was blown right off, it was free riding on the converter. Pulled the pan off and filter, thanks to you lol, and After looking at the bushing, 9:13 I noticed that it did not have the notch for the oil return passage. Everything else looks good, I will make that notch and install new oil seal, Thank you so much!

I enjoyed watching your video, you've given alot of great tips and inspiration to pulling the trans to those of us who are thinking about doing what you are in the middle of. Liked 👍 and subbed😎

Watching your vid on this and reading the comments below gives me some warmth and calmness about my 02 Ex 7.3. Its got almost 290,000 on the original trans, its never been out. I've been following you and your vids for the last 11 years or so and have seen the extreme mode tuner, frequent towing, racing, burnout couple times and generally how you and your family drove it, and seeing how clean and undamaged that transmission is after all that is a confidence booster. The converter wasnt even scortched or balloned out. Like Bill Hewitt said, the 4R100 is a perfectly fine transmission as long as its maintained. Appears very true. Considering I just tow with mine and drive easy, in theory should last alot longer, even with a 60HP old Hypertech tuner on it. Love the vids as always :-)

I have done several of these and have found with that much fluid on the outside of the bell housing and not as much on the inside that the seal is usually not the problem. That trans has a thermostatic bypass assembly on the passenger side and they usually fail in the closed position causing the trans to get hot and push fluid out the vent and all over the outside of the bell hosing. The bypass assembly in question is on the outside of the trans and has the two banjo type fitting on it where the trans cooler lines hook up. Do yourself a favor and replace it with a ford part also.

101numlock I heard about that issue, but I do have a transmission temperature gauge with the probe installed at the pressure test point on the transmission. Have yet to see anything above 200 when towing heavy. However, it’s probably a good idea to replace that while I’ve got it out so I’ll probably get it done. Thanks for sharing your experience!

Wow. Thank you! This solved my problem! Mine was puking trans fluid everywhere and this was the fix.

@DanielJaegerFilms WRONG WRONG WRONG The seal on those were defective to begin with. They can be identified by the gray color and manufacturer made by National. The updated seal is black. The "bearing " as you call it is actually a bushing and rarely the issue. The thermal valve allows fluid to bypass and warm up faster in cold climates.

Looks like you have leaned a little about the 4R100. I have a 99 F-350 v10 with a 4R100 4x4, transmission will leak until the fluid does not show on the dip stick at all & stops? At first, I thought it was leaking out of the shift shaft but that would mean it was higher on the dip stick. Also, when the fluid shows nothing on the dip stick with engine running & cold, I put in 1 qt then it is over the full mark hot. Does anyone have any ideas before I take out the transmission? Is empty to over full (hot mark) around 6oz?

I had a feeling you would run into problems with the filter since you didn't say anything about it when you were removing the pump. You live, You Learn, lol.

Do did you have to put it into a certain gear to pull the pump

It really surprises me with that many miles and with the age of the excursion it has no rust.

And that fact that it’s lived it’s life in the winter salty road Midwest! However, there is some cancer starting to eat through the body under the doors. It’s hidden, but it’s there.

Yeah, I have a 08’ Dodge Ram 1500 with 330,000 miles, all original drivetrain wise. The rockers, rear wheel wells, and rear bumper are absolutely shot due to rust. Absolutely awesome mechanically, but I have a feeling the rust is going to kill it. Frame barely has surface rust though. Dodge should’ve coated the rockers as good as they coated the frame!

Question on this trans, my 4r100 on 2003 f250 5.4 gas 4x4 has two speed sensors on the top of it- front (input/turbine speed sensor) and rear (output speed sensor). I keep getting run around on which ones they are as there is a 19mm long (plug part that goes into trans hole on top) and 37mm long (" ") and i have seen videos where they remove the front and its 19mm long and another video where they remove the front and its 37mm long. Ford parts guy says they are both 37mm on mine but i saw these videos so ? I have to drive far to dealer and cant really mess this up. Any exact data would truly help my brotha, thanks !!!

Just Replaced the Original transmission in my 02 7.3 today. I've had the truck since new, transmission had 399,863 miles on it and she finally died.......

Good to know! Hopefully I can get 400k out of this transmission as well.

Aw I would've been happy that it made it that far but so sad you couldn't push it another 137 miles. Make it 400,000 even.

    a FORD that's a hot mess no way :)))))
full rebuild time and fix all the imbalanced vibrating junk while at it.... aka rebuild the engine because bad mains and crank flex that's killing the trans....
yeah I went there, designed to last 120K at best.........

    • @HaydenIngram
      @HaydenIngram 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

You have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. Bad mains? Crank flex? Care to elaborate. 120k on a 7.3 is extremely low mileage and see very little to no wear if maintained even the slightest.
